This was a true story about one of the greatest hoofers ( Tap dancers ) of All Time Bill " Bojangles" Robinson. Bojangles was one of the first Black entertainers to make it in show business at first in the vaudeville circuit and then in the movies with his most famous movie being with Shirley Temple ! Sammy was a young man when he met Bojangles with his father and uncle ( the Bill Masten Trio ) during those vaudeville days. Sammy Davis Jr is the greatest entertainers to ever live !!! He was also one of the greatest Hoofers to ever dance as well. He played several instruments including the drums. He was Michael Jackson before Michael Jackson. In fact Michael adored the ground Sammy walked on. Icon is too weak a word for him. A stage General !!!!!

I am proud and lucky enough to be a Golden Key holder to his private grave site in Forest Lawn. In the 60th anniversary special they did for him when he danced with Gregory Hines, Michael Jackson sang a song called Because of You that he wrote just for Sammy about how it was because of him, he was who he was.

Back in the Day, Sammy was part of the "Rat Pack". Back Then (in Vegas), When one or more of them were Performing at Different Hotels, they'd Drop in on Each Other ONSTAGE and would perform Improvised Shows. But being the Early 60's, Sammy ( and any Black People) wouldn't be Allowed to enter through the Main Doors. "The Chairman", Frank Sinatra went to the Owners and told them either Sammy (and ALL Black People) would be Allowed to Come in Throw those doors, or he would Tear up his Contract and find a Showroom that Would. The Owners caved in. Sammy was a FULL Member of the Pack, and his Word and deeds Held as Much Weight as Frankie, Dino Joey and Peter. Sammy was a BIG Influence in tearing down Segregation!

This song is indeed about Bill Bojangles Robinson. Although he was the highest paid black entertainer of his time he died penniless and destitute. His funeral was paid for by Ed Sullivan. Evan though he was paid the highest wages for black performers, the money he made was pennies on the dollar compared to his white counterparts. So he really didn't make any money at all . But he was loved by the industry and well respected !!!

@@tonygourdine512 This song is not about Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Robinson never spent one second in any jail. This song is about a down and out white man. The song was written by a white man. During that time, white and Black men would not have shared a jail cell in New Orleans, it would have been against the law to put them in the same cell together. Bill "Bojangles" was a highly paid star of stage and film, he was never down and out, nor was he a drunk who would have been in a drunk tank in some local jail. "Jerry Jeff Walker's 1968 folk song "Mr. Bojangles" has been misinterpreted as a song about Robinson. According to Walker, it was instead inspired by Walker's encounter with a street performer in the New Orleans first precinct jail, a street performer who called himself "Bo Jangles".[39] In the song, the street performer is a heavy drinker and has a dog that died. By Robinson's own account and those of his friends, he neither smoked nor drank (although he was a frequent and avid gambler),[11]: p. 121 and he never had a dog. Bill "Bojangles" Robinson was a real dancer in the 1930s. He performed in, I think 6 Shirley Temple movies. He taught Shirley Temple to dance. He was the first to dance up and down stairs. He and Shirley Temple (who was an 8 years old at the time) did a dance duet up and down stairs in one movie, I believe The Littlest Colonel 1935. Sammy Davis, Jr. is one of Americas treasures. He could sing, dance, and act. One of the Rat Pack which included Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. Frank, Sammy and Dean were the best entertainers of the group. The song was written by Jerry Walker in 1965 inspired by the story told to him by a New Orleans street performer who spent time in jail for public intoxication. He met a homeless man who borrowed Bojangles name while in the jail to cover his identity. The actor/dance Bill Bojangles Robinson was a black man. This name borrower was white but also a dancer. The story told in the song is true. This song was significant to Sammy Davis Jr because he had feared becoming like the Bojangles of the song.

This song was written by Jerry Jeff Walker about a man he met in a Texas jail. Sammy Davis Started out at about 5 Y>O. with his dad and uncle as part of The Will Maston Trio. On one of our early dates I took my wife to be to see Sammy Davis in 1968 to the Latin Casino in Cherry Hill, NJ. It cost me almost a week's pay. But he put on a fabulous show. He was considered the greatest all around entertainer of his time.

Bojangles Robinson was one of America's greatest dancers, even appearing in some films in the 1930s when he was very old.

Actually this song was about the many talented black dancers who never made it big. It is not about the legendary Bill (Bojangles) Robinson who did become a star. To me, Sammy Davis Jr, will always be the greatest talent ever. He started dancing when he was just a little boy. He could sing. He was great at doing impersonations. He could act. He did it all, and he was also a civil rights activist. I get misty-eyed whenever I watch him. Thanks so much for this reaction.

Amazing talent! They don't make them like this anymore, and the band is phenomenal.

We need to see HIM dance again -- thank YOU for donating that experience to me. Mr. Sammy Davis Jr. lived perfection in everything he did. Interesting fact is that my late father loved the guy and his performances, and I got to meet S. D. Jr. in 1989 on the L.A. Christmas parade, just five months before he passed. I so much enjoyed how much you appreciated his stage presence and performance. Thanks for bringing back some bitter-sweet and cherished memories. Love from Germany

Sammy Davis was amazing, I was introduced to him through the Rat Pack. Funny thing was he could impersonate each of his fellow members style a sound in a heartbeat. He was rare indeed

Mr Bojangles - Bill Robinson. One of the greatest dancers and entertainers of all time. When he died in 1949, the great and the good all attendedhis funeral. This is a beautiful tribute to him as was synonymous with Sammy Davis Jr., as he said in the video, he could not do a show without singing this. Lovely reaction as ever.
