Here's legit advice from someone who was on their college panel for scholarships: Prioritize scholarships issued from your own college as you only have to compete with classmates and not a whole state, or nation. Read up on the scholarship itself and what the donors prioritize. Don't go for scholarships that don't match your interests 1 to 1 because chances are there is someone else that's a better match and will be picked over you. If you're a minority or the government declares your family low income, use that to your advantage. Mention your struggles in your letter and how that affects your studying/life/opportunities and how much better you would be if you had that money. Fill out your FASFA and any other documents as that sometimes disqualifies you from the scholarship. Good luck.
@ashsoro1039

@SneezingSquink

@@roon66568 General rule of thumb is that public colleges will have less tuition costs and some will offer scholarships packaged into your admission depending on how good your transcript is. As for private colleges, they usually have a web page dedicated to any scholarships they may offer. I'd also look into any state wide financial assistance programs in addition to your FASFA. Illinois has MAP and Pell grants that absolutely helped. Even scholarships that may seem small monetarily like less than a thousand, can add up if you get multiple.

Trust me the military benefits are more reliable than any “military man” can be lol. I don’t see it as depending on them it’s called making an investment 📝. That might go over a lot of heads.

I didn't go to Emerson, but I got a TA job that paid my head school tuition and a monthly stipend that was enough for cheap rent and careful food budgeting.

My biggest advice for people is to go to a community college to do your prerequisites and then transfer over to a university. If you can try to do some college course while your in high school. Being in debt sucks and should be avoided at all cost. Dave Ramsey gives some great advice for those who are interested.

Translation: my dad gave me his GI bill. Honestly the GI bill is the only logical reason to join the military. If they ever get rid of it don’t even consider joining. 100% free tuition to any public university and a housing allowance. I had to serve 4 years in the Navy to get this benefit, she was given this. She’s extremely privileged.

Joined the Marine Corps. Chose a military job that granted me free schooling worth 24 college credits. Then used Tuition Assistance benefits while in active duty to start my 4-year degree. By the time I finished my enlistment I had 1 year left towards my bachelors. Used the Post 9/11 GI-Bill to pay for it, and went full time so I also got paid a housing allowance. I had 3 years left in benefits which I used to get a Master’s degree. Which also paid me housing allowance since I also did that full time (in the evenings after work). All in all. I got a bachelors and masters degree that I technically got paid to get. I still have some remaining GI Bill benefits I can probably use to get some certifications in my field of work.

Brown person here living in Compton with emigrant parents. I graduated 2021 with a degree in engineering. I had scholarship specially since I had a degree in STEM. I also had odd jobs that help me paid for food. No student loan debt so my best recommendation is if you do go to college go for something that matters or that you can't teach yourself. Don't waste time and money going for art or anything related to that.

Scholarships seem difficult to attain but for the most part it's necessity and motivation. Out of curiosity, for one semester I took college seriously, study, sleep on time, pass everything on time with maximum effort on quality of my work. Aced everything that semester! The tests were the easy part, it's maintaining motivation and discipline that's mind numbingly hard. Unfortunately, I went back to my regular lazy self next semester though. So I commend everyone who graduated scholars and those with honors. Will power is the determining factor for success.

Let me translate “daddy’s gi bill gave me 25k a year. I grew up in a good house with guidance and mentorship so I was set up on a good path from the start and got a head start on life. Because I had a good start, universities offered me extra free money. If you are planning on pulling a loan don’t. Just do what I did and have your parents set you up for success.”

That is easier said than done. It depends on your college, living situation, and major. Some majors simply offer way more scholarships than others. I have twins. One majored in Technical Writing and Literature. She had a lot of little scholarships but didn't come close to covering it. The other had a scholarship which covered 100% of her tuition but she went to a private college so, it still cost about $5,000 more a semester than it did for her sister at a state school. Both went to colleges too far away to live at home. So, while she does have absolutely great advice everyone should listen to and try to take full advantage of, few are going to be able to. On a side note, I went back to college late in life and majored in Photonics. The women in the program were covered 100% including books because they were receiving a non-traditional rolls scholarship. It was very cool. The cool thing about it was that men qualified for it as well if they went into Nursing. So, step back and look at options like that as well.

Ask your financial aid advisor if an alumni would pay/sponsor/give you a scholarship. My brother maxed out his student loan borrowing amount his senior year, had a full time job, had to have all his family members attempt to be co-signers and have a written account that they had said no with their signature or had a denial loan letter, his financial aid advisor attempted all random scholarships (lots of essays and other random financial things we would have to submit), get paperwork showing a parent was unfit and didn’t contribute…only theeeeen did the financial aid advisor ask alumni and someone actually paid his senior year. That was a good day, but f**k was that absolutely degrading for him and my mom especially. But ask if you are desperately needing help, it really helped.

She's in this situation mostly because of her dad. His GI Bill can transfer to his spouse or kids. Otherwise the scholarships wouldn't have covered anything. Make sure to peel the onion and see how they did it. There is more to meet the eye than that. And also I hate how people judge others because they were born on third base and just happened to have family who got lucky.
