You’re doing what I do from time to time. Sometimes going with whatever the latest craze is in gaming can become very “samey” and boring for many. I periodically drop off certain games or modern games and go back to older games and consoles I played when I was younger. Or I drop off heavily gaming and just watch/listen and do crafts, travel or cleaning. It’s mainly something I do to recharge myself when I’m burnt out. It feels good to remind myself of what I love about gaming, reliving those emotions connected to it or give myself other things that aren’t computer based to focus on.

Great video and topic to bring up, thanks for the video firstly. I've found that when I or others have felt a bit bored by gaming, what helps rediscover the excitement again is two things. Firstly, like you mention, going back to old favourites and (re)discovering what you loved about them. I've also found though that almost the opposite helps too, finding a game in a genre you haven't really played much can help too, as you may discover a new favourite. I recently had this when starting to play more puzzle games, like Myst and Talos Principle that I discovered those are now some of my favourite games ever, yet only a few years ago I wouldn't have really thought of picking them up.

it's the same as with old music. They have something special that makes them timeless. and you can listen to them over and over again and they never get boring and you never forget them. Things used to be produced differently and music or games didn't have a half-life of 3 hours. And then there is the fact that you have associated memories with the old things. You hear this one song or play this one game and you are immediately back in the situation you were in when you had some special experience with it. It's always great to hear or play something old from the old days.

I liked guild wars 1 much more than guild wars 2. Guild wars 2 was great at the beginning. It was also another team back then. They wanted to make a game that didn't look like other mmo. No raids, no level cap and so on. Then i new team took over the game for a reason i do not know. Then they went the way like all other games. And made the unique game to a typical mmo. That was where i quit the game. I liked the way the old team wanted it. I hope guild wars 3 will be more unique as guild wars 2 was supposed to be. But if it's the same team, then i have on high hopes.

Grim Dawn was good at the time but current ARPGs boast systems that Grim Dawn is lacking especially bosses, crafting, graphics, etc. It was good but it's not holding up to the current quality of the games being released. Although, the expansion may answer all of that 'lacking' feature, we still don't know what's actually up with the upcoming season expansion. At this rate, it's better if they just release a new Grim Dawn game.

The way people have interacted with MMO's has changed so much though. Back in the 2000's when Runescape was enormous, the novelty for younger players of being in a new virtual space made it a lot more interesting. I couldn't play WoW at the time, bit Guild Wars 1 was my Sanctuary in that time and I met a lot of friends through it. I moved on to GW2 and it's been similar, but a much less social experience and that hasn't changed for other MMOs I've also explored: ESO, FFXIV, and others, people seem to have been playing them much more "solo, but together". However, I have been enjoying playing GW1 with my GW2 people, that's been very informative! And the skills are cool

I've watched your videos off and on for a long time but this video got me to subscribe. Great topic! It was surreal but also awesome when my (then) pre-teen daughter asked my mom if she could have my old NES. Fast forward a decade and she's still retro gaming alongside modern games and enjoying the variety. It may not be nostalgic for her as a Millennial, but I'm really glad she sees the value in the older games. That led naturally to an interest in 80s and 90s pop culture including some classic movies. As a direct result, in college, she ended up getting a job as a media librarian for her university, transferring old media to digital format. They viewed her as an expert in older media types!

Re: Replayability - I think this speaks to simplicity of older games (sometimes at least). How you can pop in the game, and you're playing within one minute. And it doesnt take long to understand the mechanics and buttons, world, etc. But mastering the strategy is very fulfilling. Personally, I find that I am often overwhelmed with the vastness of many newer games. And also they become min/max competitions rather than "for love of the game" type of experiences. To each their own though. Something charming about the simplicity of older games. And how they would meme themselves with cheat codes. Most of that is all but gone now though. Everyone is more concerned with cracking the damage formulas on day one and exploiting data mining avenues for game knowledge.

The thing with MMOs is many take a lot more time investment compared to arpg's. RL gets in the way. Throw in some visual mods and be in space above the planet and it looks SO gorgeous and vast and everything and I realize why it was worth it for me to do all the hard stuff in the first place, for that, the views and the feelings they spark in me. And we had them company formation 100% every hour on the hour until we got everyone there on weekends sometimes!! But man the feeling to go and game with everyone you work with all we talked about was wow!! I had a NCO our Motor SGT get me out of details so I could raid with them because I was out too DPS at the time!! I use to carry people to 1800-2k raiting so they could get gear! First time ever I stayed at grown peoples house and we all hooked up our desktops laptops and Ran dungeons together in the same house!! It was crazy!! From 2005-2009 I would say was the best times I ever had in wow! Where you felt like you was in another world!! And with other people!! SWG was my first mmo I ever played and that is what made me play WoW when it switched to NGE and became a terrible game… I have been hoping for another mmo to do what wow did!! But none have done it since .. and maybe never will in my life.

You should give the original guild wars a shot. It’s a really phenomenal experience to come back to, and the servers have been running for nearly 19 years!

Yeah man. As the years go on, I always find myself returning again and again to the old Final Fantasy and Legend of Zelda games going back 30 years. Most of them still stand up.

I subscribed to you on a whim because Asmongold was watching one of your videos but now i realize you're a pretty wholesome guy and have a good head on your shoulders that was some great advice in this video. Definitely made the right call subscribing here and i really look forward to watching more of your videos

i feel you, also the main reason why i bought a switch last year despite the console getting old and the rumors of a switch 2 coming out soon. mainly because i never owned a console or a handheld in my childhood. I was able to get to play gameboy games from borrowing from a friend or using an emulator. been playing the pokemon diamond remake (Brilliant Diamond) and megaman legacy collections currently and i am happy.

Man there must be something in the air because I was hunting for a time sink to play/chill out on after work and fell back into the MMO genre just this past week. Gone with FF14. There’s also a lot of exciting content scheduled to release this summer in the MMO genre

Couple month ago I just realized I was farming in d4 and it’s not a challenge anymore doing the same thing over and over. I decided to pick up Elden ring again and give it a real try this time. Been having a blast with it

It's a great feeling to go back and play those great single player games after playing modern games that feel like jobs at times. I play SM64, MegaMan X, and BioShock like once a year as some of my favorites to reset my brain. Maybe throw in a DOOM II or a Vice City.

Somewhat recently i was tired of being stuck on playing just like one game (Apex Legends since season 0) and i just got tired of not experiencing more and it was mainly cuz it was an easy game to play with friends. But lately ive been getting my friends to play other games and trying games i never got to play and it is so fucking refreshing

Similar to what happened to me many moons ago. I prefer going back to older titles when I have downtime now that I don't feel like I always need to play the newest hot game right away. I'll get to them ... eventually.

We dony actualy miss those games. We miss the society those games created. That feeling being a part of a team. Belonging a family.

I bought ESO the day it came out, played it for 30min and didn’t touch it for 4 years. Picked it back up and gave it an HONEST shot. And was HOOKED for 4 years straight. It is phenomenal. These are the type of games the really do require you to fully dive in though. If you don’t fully emerge in it, it’s not going to be fun. Imo Just did the same with destiny 2, and realized I’ve had it for like 9 years 😂 and my character had like 40 minutes of playtime on it, now I’m hooked.

I have been finding that most of the newer games will hold my interest for a bit, but not a huge amount of time. However going back and playing games that most people consider "old", anything from Banjo-Kazooie to Journey, to Just Cause 2 and 3, or the Life is Strange series; have been amazing fun. I feel that a lot of games have lost the vision of what makes gaming fun, it's not chasing the goals that was fun, it was playing the game and encountering and making your own goals because there were options there. Make games that have options for players to explore, and don't have forced play channels which mean that "Play your own way" is impossible (I am talking to you Helldivers 2), make a game that is designed around players being able to go into the game and just have fun their way, and then find their own challenge and rewards with their playstyle. Locking them into specific goals in order to progress turns exploration into searching, and those are different.

Wasnt there an article recently that came out saying most people are playing older games than new games now. I know when there isn't anything new im really interested in im going back playing some classic older games. They just have a different feel and have such a lasting appeal that many modern games just lack.
