“The first step occurs when a foot, or both feet, touch the floor AFTER gaining control of the ball.” I.e. gather / zero step I wouldn’t suggest that you try any of these as they would probably get called. I’m only clarifying the rules. Again this video is only to teach rules not teach moves. I DON’T suggest you try these I DON’t suggest you teach these. I’m only clarifying the rule and what it allows. This is a huge part as to why Harden Giannis and Kyrie are amazing finishers around the rim because they have incredible footwork but these are some of the most advanced moves. I would only teach them in person when I can monitor every movement.

Half of these were travels because in the middle of his gather he gained enough control of the ball to pass or shoot. But the rule says that while a player is gathering, as soon as the player is ABLE to pass or shoot, the gather is completed.

Exactly. He is saying he hasn't gathered the ball yet as he's taking another step because he says technically he could have dribbled again. 2:00. This perfectly articulates why I disagree with the legality of these moves: I don’t think you can still dribble. If you did, any referee worth his salt would call a carry and a turnover. So, most of these plays are either a travel or a carry (if you dibbled after). I do appreciate the care you took. The principle is something we agree on. We disagree on the execution. 2:30 is an example of what would be an easy carry had you continued your dribble to the left after that palm and juke to the right.

Thanks for the slowed-down videos - makes all the difference in trying to understand things. I agree these are all legal moves, except one. As a ref I would have called you for carrying the ball in the move shown in slow motion at the 1:41 mark (also shown at 0:12 and again at the 2:02/2:03 mark). You can clearly see the ball stops falling naturally due to gravity (watch it compared to the wall). That's because more than half of your hand is under the mid-plane of the ball (all except your thumb) and your fingers are adding a slight upward force. That's the definition of carrying the ball, and it has nothing to do with how many steps you take while dribbling (you can be called for carrying even if both feet are stationary). Any good ref should catch the hand under the mid-plane and the resulting unnatural ball movement, and call it for what it is: carrying.
@onlyfacts3178
2 жыл бұрын
you can also carry the ball sideways...gathering its about gaining control of the ball, people focus on the feet when its mostly about the hands.. if you are moving forward with the ball sideways (far from your body ) that means that you have control of the ball. Gathering the ball doesnt need to be with 2 hands...its when you gain control of the ball, if you are carrying the ball the steps start counting immediately even if you didnt even grabbed the ball with both hands... 2 scenarios can happen its a travel or if you dribble the ball again its a carry.

You are travelling in several of these. You cannot change the momentum of the ball for it to be a true gather. The hand under the ball is irrelevant. Hand on side or even on top of ball still allows you to slow/change the momentum of the ball. It is a DISCONTINUED DRIBBLE. Allen Iverson cupped side of ball, Jordan palmed the ball from top. The NBA wants excitement so they let it slide and now we have Harden step back and Isaiah Thomas discontinued dribble. If you change the down dribble timing you are carrying/travelling.

Gathering is not just catching the ball with both hands. It is considered gathered if most of your hand is below the equator of the ball. And your hand did that in several of these moves. So if you can do the same moves but can keep your most of your hand on the top half of the ball, then they are all fine.

I want to see the rule book cited with videos like these. Most of this stuff looks like a travel. Even took 4 big ass steps with some of these after carrying and saying the ball was still live. Btw the movie Kyrie did was legal and not a travel. What you did is a travel.
@bryanortiz1230

To the naked eye it may look like Kyrie took 3-4 steps and thus traveled. It is when the idea of the gather comes in mind that we realize it's a legal move.

So true, this guy is definitely carrying big time and claiming that the ball is live...he's a flake and only shitty players who are looking to cheat will try this shit, just gotta call that carry as soon as you see it and that should put a stop to it...

I am 34 yrs old. I never done this because i assumed it was a travel. Now, that you took your time explaining this to me, I thank you. All these yrs Ive been balling and I felt limited with attacking the basket. Now I understand. Thank you so much for the 3rd eye opener bro.

Ryan Razooky Basketball What if it rotates slightly because when I shoot the ball rotates ever so slightly and I still hit it but lately these shot has not been dropping.

Finally someone who knows about the 0 step and the gather. I have had sooo many arguments with my friends because of it. Also you have helped me a lot and bc I play with guys 2 yrs older than me and it's difficult to score (also I am an undersized pg) I've been able score some points.

Daniel Girvan I mean,,, the rules doesn’t need to be changed! I don’t like this video. And I hope y’all don’t go out and try these stuff because it’ll convince more people to do it.
@sharpies_yt

If you’re struggling undersized, please don’t let this video courage you to try these moves every game! I think this will ruin the game if everyone starts bending the rules and it will get outta hand. If you wanna get good at scoring (not saying you’re not), then get faster and shiftier. Not bend the rules. There are plenty of other videos that can help you out.

@@sharpies_yt the gather step or "0" step is 100% within the rules of basketball. Always has been. The emphasis now is that the refs in the NBA have clarified what its definition is. I'm personally from a FIBA country and they added the gather step to the rules in the last couple of years. If it's good enough for the biggest governing bodies in basketball it's good enough for everyone.

Jordan should've taken 6 steps then since he didn't need to put his hand under the ball to "gather". He could palm it so easily from the top.
