So tonight I listened to a song that was recommended to me by a regular viewer of the channel and that was Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday.
I love Jazz music. Evolution of Jazz formed part of my music Diploma, so I’ve listened to a lot of different styles of Jazz, but never heard any Billie Holiday songs, so when this was suggested, it had to go right up to the top of the list of songs to do!
I wasn’t prepared for what came next. This song was raw and quite graphic at points. Billie performed it perfectly; portraying the pain in the lyrics vocally superbly. The song covers the awful treatment of black Americans in the early 1900’s and was inspired by a photograph showing two black men being killed in Indiana.
This is the kind of song I would LOVE to have seen her perform live as I think it’s one of those ‘once in a lifetime’ songs that people everywhere have where they hope/wish they had witnessed the moment.
The music was simple, but that allowed us to focus on the singer and give her all our attention, which she definitely commanded here. The very last line of ‘here is a strange and bitter crop’ has stuck with me over the last few days. Very poignant.
