Finally! After all these years someone (Thomas) has finally put the Vitamin D matter in proper perspective. Tom has articulated very well how this hormone (vitamin D) is acquired and physiologically processed in our bodies for our benefit. As a retired fish biologist versed in cellular and molecular biology, I appreciate this man's messaging. His info corroborates with what I have researched and discovered over many years. I spend a lot of my time in the sun careful not to over do it (i.e. sunburn). Here is my secret: In the waning weeks and months of summer and early fall, I sun bath in my shorts for about half an hour several days a week acquiring "vitamin D" in a form most useful to my body. I never use sunscreen. I balance it out by eating wild salmonid fish, range free eggs, sardines, oysters, and take D3 supplements. Blue Ice fermented cod liver oil is a great natural source supplement for vita A and D. And at my age (69), I rarely ever get sick, take no medications (Rx or OTCs), have no skin or joint issues; and still hunt big game in the mountains alone packing my animals out alone for the exercise and fresh air benefits. I feel like I am still 40 years old. To be fair, I also do weight training , moderate yoga, and minimize TV time; instead going outside for landscaping chores, hiking, fishing, hunting, and whatever else. Combined, this is the basis to help you maximize your vitamin D intake and processing. Stay young --stay strong-- and enjoy more time time in the outdoors. I can not emphasize that enough.

This _sounds_ like a good idea, but it may be less than ideal in practice. Vitamin "D3" is still two metabolic steps away from the form which is useful to the body. Since it has to get to the liver for the first step, the most direct path would be via the portal vein from the lower GI. It would be an interesting (and worthwhile) study for researchers to measure whether drops taken under the tongue for people with medically confirmed gut issues resulted in higher or lower useful vitamin D levels in the blood than capsules which are swallowed. Plenty of clever ideas about human biology (and especially metabolism) "make sense" but simply turn out not to be so.

Vitamin D is almost impossible to get from food. The sun is the best form. However, your skin color actually does make a difference for how long you need to be in the sun. Also, you can't just go outside and be covered in clothes to get vitamin d. Each part of your body only absorbs so much of the good sunlight rays. So winter does not work so well. We also don't work outside like in the past..and if you have a illness or just low, it takes some good supplementation to build. Where you live is huge too,, even the time of day you choose to go out to get vitamin d from sun. The biggest worry about vitamin d supplementation is that you build too much calcium in the body. This can actually be dangerous especially at high levels....so add vitamin k. It's even better if you take them at separate times but if you can't, they do make supplements with both. Always take with a fat or your absorption is minimized. Vitamin K helps the vitamin d be appropriately directed to the parts of body needed vs calcium build up in blood vessels. Vitamin D3 is one of the most important vitamins needed. Plus, it is actually a hormone too. Most ppl are low and without are prone to get sick or develop more illnesses. You need to do all three from the sun, in foods (like cod liver oil is the highest and it isn't a ton), and supplementation. Get as much sun as possible without burning. Eat vit D containing food - although this has little effect. Take supplemental D3 with K2. Synthetic does not mean bad. There have been enough trials to show how supplements are effective in raising D levels. What he should mention is getting your levels checked - it is a cheap test. @@VickiTakacs. Depending on many VARIABLES, and taking vitamin k- 2000 IU to 10000 IU for maintenance. Otherwise see a doctor. If you have a chronic illness, you may require more. A couple of years later I now have calcification on all those dissected arteries. Thank Goodness I saw a video by Dr. Berg talking about how vitamin K2 is absolutely necessary so that the calcium (which works with D) knows to put that calcium into teeth and bones instead of in the arteries. While looking on Amazon I saw one testimony after another about how K2 has diminished the build-up in their arteries some were even able to avoid surgery. It only gives me a lot of energy, I’m still experiencing muscle spasms and achy joints. And my moods are terrible. Also I’m pretty sure i have Ibs. I’m only 23 years old, i live in the northern states. I was wondering if someone could help me with a good supplement? Because my doctor seems to be no help.

What lifestyle do you lead? Healthy foods? exercise? Lot of water? Low or high sodium? Typically, supplements will not fix issues. But I do know certain bowl issues can keep you from absorbing vitamins and such so I would start there.

Yea American MD s are terrible at nutrition. They barely believe it matters. Vitamin d3 alongside vitamin k2 in the form of mk7 is the preferred set-up at this time. The recommendation is 10to15k iu of d3 for 30 or 60 days IF you're really low when you begin. This next statement is very important: We need the k2 for calcium balance especially at that higher level of d3 to prevent our blood system from becoming calcified (heart disease) The vitamin k in leafy greens isnt the right type. We gotta get k2 from supplement or from fermented food. For some reason soy tempeh is the best source. I hate that schiznit myself. I use the mk7 supplement. I dont know the right dosage for the initial higher d3 dosage. But i do know after the initial period of d3, for maintenance, we drop to 4000iu of the d3 for ongoing maintenance. And that goes with 200mcg (micrograms) of the mk7. I rely on this guy, Thomas, and this guy: (kzitem.info/news/bejne/pZWLsJV7k5dqmpw) and on Dr. Berg also here on the u tube. They don't always agree, but the research is emerging and I try to get a variety of perspectives for a broader understanding of what's being learned.

Take K2 with it Take quality magnesium at bedtime Use quality cod liver oil ideally, it has perfectly balanced vitA and ur O-3s with it too. Take the centrifuged “high vitamin” butter oil also for the vitK. Unless u work outside most of the yr, u need these wholefood “supplements”.

You have to be in the sun 7-9 hours daily to elevate your D3 to healthy level. If you don't believe me ask your endourologist as 80% of people are d3 deficient. It's important to get it from all three sources which are foods, sunlight, and supplements. If that's not possible then a higher quality d3 supplement works well for the majority of the people as they can be absorbed by the body better.

The UVB window is at most a few short, noonish hours at High Summer, none at all for varying lengths of Temperate Winter. But other parts of the solar spectrum also support our health, so longer NO SUNBURN periods can be very healthful. Sunburn is the cancer danger, so after 20 minutes to 2 hours UVB (20,000IU!) depending on your skin tone, put on a hat & just get the healthy safe reflected infrared rays!☀

Thomas, You forgot to mention one more group of people. Those with genetic markers that indicate their bodies are not effective in manufacturing vitamin D using UHB exposure. My wife has those genetics and must take a supplement daily to avoid the effects of low vitamin D levels. It's more common than you think.

My Vitamin D was 7. My doctor freaked out. He put me on 50K IU prescription 3 times per week, then over the counter 5,000 IU rest of my life. I have lupus and have to avoid the sun but I do sneak out without sunscreen a few minutes per day. Going in for testing next week so we will see where we are.

Are you supposed to take the vitamin D3/K2 together or are you better taking them seperately, D3 in the morning and K2 at night?
@BrilloHead
7 ай бұрын
I would stick to just D3 for supplementation. You can get your K2 from animal based foods and fermented foods. No reason to be taking a K2 supplement when you can get it easily from food. Plus, your gut microbes will naturally make some K2.

You missed a few of issues here. Some of us can’t tolerate much time in the sun because of medications we require. Also, those of us with Multiple Sclerosis take vitamin D supplements as part of our treatment. Supplementation has proven efficacy for delaying progression of the disease. And anyone requiring D supplementation who has an allergy to lanolin needs to get their D3 from lichen or another source as most commercial supplements, including those obtained by prescription, are derived from lanolin.

I think it is a wonderful mechanism that we store Vitamin D in summer in fat (when food is plentiful) and for it then getting released in winter when food is sparse and we lose fat. (Thinking of ancestral way of life)

It seems to me that someone with inflammation or autoimmune issues would need much higher doses than can be achieved by sunlight and food. Not saying no to those, only need to rely on supplementation more. I like how you break it all down with the research. It makes the battle easier to understand.

You're correct! High inflammation will deplete vitamin D. Needing 10K IUs a day is not normal and the body is telling you something. Its important to address the root cause and not cover up with supplementing D. The inflammation will continue to deteriorate the body if ignored regardless of vitamin D

Hey Thomas, a great vid as usual. The one thing I needed to hear about D3 is an alternative to the supplement because my doc keeps me on 50,000 units once a week for severe spinal stinosis. Can you address this for me? I've heard you say before (I think) that cod liver oil is best? If so, how do I know I'm getting an amount close to what I'm supposed to be getting? Thx very much, Janey!
