I think too many people have missed the point. The cast talks about this finale during their entertainment weekly sit down. And they feel it’s one of the favourite episodes because it slows everything down. The show wasn’t ever about the future beyond this point, it was to show that life continues even after tragedy. That people are resilient and should appreciate life while it’s happening because one day it won’t be. It’s not about who Rebecca loved more, or Kyle, the baby that died. Life happens and we have to keep going until our train comes.

I didn’t shed a tear until those last few minutes watching the Pearson family enjoy the little moments. Rebecca is right, life is built on the little things. Sure the big things tend to stick out in our memories, but it’s those small things that don’t seem so important like playing board games with your family, your mom cooking breakfast on the first day of school, or drawing with chalk on a lazy day that make life so enjoyable. Those are the moments you could stay in forever.

The things that people are mentioning about the finale seeming anticlimactic and the last season feeling rushed were all explained right there in the episodes. The writers were intentionally expressing things about life… that toward “the end” (of both the show and in life), things seem to go faster and faster. That’s why both Randall and Miguel say that in the wedding episode and why Randall said the “big” moments like a wedding let you feel like you’ve slowed down for a minute (and the wedding just happened to take up two episodes). And the same with the finale… they were beautifully portraying how the most important moments in life are the small, seemingly “trivial” everyday moments. Things like playing games or learning to shave or riding on the swings (which started with Rebecca as a child and went all the way down to Jack’s child). Those are the things that last. And that’s what Randall had learned from Jack. And why the lazy Saturday was Rebecca’s favorite and why they chose to honor her by recreating it at her memorial. The writers were very purposeful in how they wrote this last season and finale and it was beautifully done! 💜

All the people complaining about Randall getting too much focus (he didn’t) in the finale are hypocritical. In the last several episodes the other two got much more focused and heated, and I’m sure that felt mighty find to y’all. Just because he has a few moments with his daughter, it’s too damn much. I didn't think he got too much but Kevin got nothing really. They had that not needed (to me) silly wedding thing with Sophie and although I liked him telling her he loved her, etc. then it was over. We never see them together. I think Covid changed so much, Rebecca's wedding with Miguel, Sophie and the ring, her being a nurse was never really used but I think it might have been a thought when picking her job to help later. Many rushed episodes but they tied things up as much as possible.

I have to agree. As some have said, Randall's bond with Deja reflects Jack's bond with Randall, showing that true family is more than blood -- it can be your adopted kids. On a totally different note, I wish Tess and Annie had had more of their story told, as well as blind Jack and his sister. But I suppose the reality of TV time, especially during COVID, limits how much story of how many characters one can tell. That's the sign of a great show...leaving us wanting more.

"I painted this because I felt like the play was about life, and life is full of color, and we each get to come along and we add our own color to the painting. And even though it’s not very big, the painting, we still have to figure it goes on forever, you know, in each direction, so like to infinity, because that’s kind of like life. It’s really crazy if you think about it, isn’t it? That 100 years ago some guy that I never met came to this country with a suitcase. He has a son, who has a son, who has me. So at first when I was painting, I was thinking maybe up here, that was that guy’s part of the painting, and then down here that’s my part of the painting. And then I started to think, what if we’re all in the painting everywhere? What if we’re in the painting before we’re born? What if we’re in the painting after we die? And these colors that we keep adding, what if they keep getting added on top of one another until eventually we’re not even different colors anymore, we’re just one thing? One painting. And my dad is not with us anymore, he’s not alive. But he’s with us. He’s with me every day. It all just sort of fits somehow, even if you don’t understand how yet. People will die in our lives, people that we love, in the future, maybe tomorrow, maybe years from now. It’s kind of beautiful if you think about it, the fact that just because someone dies, just because you can’t see them or talk to them anymore, it doesn’t mean they’re not still in the painting. I think maybe that’s the point of the whole thing. There’s no dying. There’s no you, or me, or them…it’s just us. And this sloppy, wild, colorful, magical thing that has no beginning, no end…that’s right here. I think it’s us." - Kevin Pearson, This is us

I loved the final scene Jack and Randall looking fondly into each others eyes. I took it as Jack acknowledging that it was in many ways Randall that formed as a family unit as complete and in a quiet unspoke smile to each. As Randall was looking the scene before of the family that was built goes on

One of the biggest tales in the entire series what life is all about…..it showed that you didn’t have to be blood related or of the same race but you just have to give unconditional love and support no matter what. They repeatedly put love and family first and succeeded throughout their triumphs and failures and won. This was a show that focused on good value, morals, set backs, single parenting, racism, adoption, homosexuality, all phobias and I could go on, I’m going to miss this good show. I wish all of the cast, writers, execs and crew the best going forward. Blessings.

I knew by the length of the episode (evaded the spoilers like a ninja to stream the next day) that this would be an epilogue. Everything big that happened, all the grand finale revelations, happened in the train episode before. This was meant for taking the time to wrap things up and for us to say goodbye to this family, while highlighting the little moments in life, and damn it was done beautifully. I didn't find it disappointing at all. ❤️

We never got to see Kevin and Sophie happy as a married couple. All they did was get them back together. They may as well put them back together in the final episode if we were not to see any of their story. Same for Kate and Philip.

I’m a 28 year old guy and I swear this is the only thing I’ve seen on TV that has actually made me cry. And I never cry. This show just really made me think about the circle of life within my own family. Seems like just yesterday I was a kid running around in the lawn with my brothers and cousins. Now we’re all starting to get married, have kids, etc while also watching my parents and grandparents grow older. I love my life right now, but the happiest moments were the simple moments like this. Just hanging out and goofing around in the living room with your family on a rainy day without a care in the world.

I think we TIU viewers expect to have the wow, Kleenex box moments with this show. We have the last 3 episodes, at least for me .(Kevin, Sophie,Miguel, Rebecca). At first I was underwhelmed by the series finale, but went back and watched again -Highly recommended. I could now see the show for its simplicity; family, love, forgiveness. And… life does go on; this is how a family legacy lives on. I’m glad the show didn’t wrap things up. Life is never a “wrap up.” It’s a never ending journey.

I thought they were going to flashback to all the big moments in the family and show Jack there for all of them unbeknownst to them. That would’ve made me more of a mess than I already was! This show will go down as one of my favorites, hands down. So beautifully written!

You are right. They did this last show "without" a big moment. No speeches at Rebecca's funeral. Just the family being a family and showing what the show was trying to convey, it is the little things. They said it over and over in the final season. Then they showed us that in this final episode by not doing anything big. I thought it was a very nice touch to explain the hand squeeze between Randal and Rebecca and then to the squeeze between Jack and Rebecca at the end. There are so many classic lines and thoughts in the final episode. I am so glad this is the way it ended.

@@marvinwhisman3333 I always appreciated those moments more than any big ones. I wished I could capture them forever. Only change I would have made was with funeral. My wishes don't matter to the writers etc but I would have loved to skip the silent funeral, show a quick glimpse of room and then silently showing them scattering her ashes under the same tree and Jack's tree the way Beth was alluding to with Randall. The scenes could be be in one minute and still be moving and in some way give homage to Miguel that part of her was with him and Jack.

A LOT of people missed the point And people saying “well I would have done it this way……” - create your own show and get it produced. There’s a reason they give Dan Fogelman so much room to create his vision. He knows what he’s doing

The whole point to this show, is about family. You never know how your family is going to be made up. Jack took Randall to replace what they lost, but he ended up making the family whole. My older brother was adopted by my father, and he is the glue that holds us all together. It all comes down to jack and Randall. Randal helped Rebecca get through all the hard times and he devoted his life to her. Families come from all different places. Love is what makes a family, not always blood.
