Like you Chris I have the original motorised loop, such amazing value for something made to that quality, and I have worked to the states on it sat on top of my car that was with 5 watts CW, these are with out a doubt top quality loops, and when you consider you never used to get a signal out of your flat, its pretty amazing, well done on the contact.

Used one of the motorized variants built by same. The one I used was very effective as far as mag loops are - one that went down to 40m used with an FT-818, so definitely driving it well below it's power handling rating. Given it's nearest HQ counterpart you can buy ready built (just add power for motor drive and a Rx or TxCr) costs way more (and more so now it's sourcing is pretty much exclusive to one retailer in the UK) then this serious is pretty much as good a HQ tunable as you'll get without paying a car deposit level sum (and that's not counting shipping). These series of loops only needs you to add a bit of weatherproofing to the motor and coil to make it something you can leave outdoors for extended periods (say when portable or used a lot and only bought in when it's not likely to be used for extended periods). I used someone else's, but in hand on heart honesty, I'd easily see the motorised units as excellent value. But the build quality alone makes it a pleasure to look at, so a hardcore ham could use it as a display centrepiece when not in use, that's how well finished and built the retailed production examples are. The 2E0 who builds them, earns his money and easily doesn't need to justify the price (which as I say, is well inside sane money vs the 'radiophile' market Italian equiv). Even if you never use it on air, it's a very worthy choice to pair with a decent comms Rx of any gen.

Thanks Christopher for the interesting information. I am beta testing The new loop. I have got all three of them. I have got the motorised version which is fantastic. This is not final hardware and would definitely be a candidate that needed the motor. On the 80 m as you know the tuning is has to be so precise.

@@digitalanaloguehamradio well good luck - I'm sure your feedback will help, as is the case with anything well engineered - even if it's just a fine tweak in the engineering suggestion. Certainly, a multi speed (adjustable or staged) motor assembly helps speed up the process - but even on an unmotorised item, adding a motor drive isn't rocket science but it helps if your ingenuity cogs are running smoothly (especially for what may be outdoors use). As for tuning sensitivity, well it goes with the territory on mag loops being a wideband item with a pretty deep dip (hence the rejection characteristics) and the deep dip being intertwined with it's narrow BW at resonance. However, when it comes to wideband pop-up antenna use, mag loops and passive noise cancelling types are about as good as it gets, where the BW between retuning being the only comprise notably worth being aware of.

I am in a block of flats. With no garden. So I understand what you mean. This is the only way I can get on 80 m at the moment. The bandwidth is very narrow but it’s the nature of magnetic loops and it’s better than nothing.

He makes very nice antennas, but all of them are 500 mm diameter, much too small a diameter for reasonable efficiency, for 14 MHz and lower they should be closer to .8 to 1 meter diameter but then shipping becomes a problem. Of course, what I call reasonable is so subjective and if band conditions are good, the smaller ones will work.

Yes, good points. My first magnetic loop was a g4tph which was very large what did not work at all it was awful. At least I can get contacts on this.
@electrocity2000

My friend had one of these 2e0 loops and although there are well built, they are horrible performers. For starters, the loop is far too small diameter for them to be efficient. God only knows what they're like on 40m and 80m, but I'd say in the order of between 1 and 3% max efficiency. As an experiment, we strung a random piece of wire outside and connected it to a simple LC tuner and then into the HF transceiver. Signals came in much stronger than the loop and TX worked perfectly, plus they didn't have the narrow bandwidth to worry about. On TX, could easily run 100w whereas these loops are only rated for 30w. People think these magnetic loops are great because they've worked stations all over the world, unfortunately, it's just the fact that the station being worked has a much better antenna system than you and is putting out 100's or even 1000's of watts. Someone running a wet string antenna could work these big guns. Also, people are using these loops on wspr and ft8 modes which require such little power, the fact that someone is putting 5w in and getting 50mW radiated is nothing to write home about.

I have work the world on mine. And they have gone through many iterations of improvements. They are just as good as the Alex loop. Without the cost. And with better build quality. Thx
@electrocity2000

@@digitalanaloguehamradio The Alex loop is equally as awful. The point being, a random wire and LC tuner will provide far better performance than any of these loops and at a fraction of the cost. You usually only work a station because they have an excellent antenna, they are the ones putting in all of the work. Really people, stop wasting money on compromised antennas.

For those with no garden it is a solution. I built my own years ago out of copper pipe, had remote tuning. Surprisingly easy to feed the power down the coax and to decouple at the motor end. If there's any advantage its the small footprint, rejection of unwanted signal Hi Q tuning. And ability to change somewhat between horizontal and vertical. Later I bought the mfj version £80 SK club sale. Haven't really used it yet due to lack of time. I did get replacement motor over from mfj as that was shot. Good compromise antenna for sure..
