As a native Spanish speaker and Peruvian, I can confirm that sometimes people start a war in comment sections, or in whatever part of the internet, about the correct way to say it: aguacate or palta. Personally, I call it palta and everyone in my country does, like the video explained, but I consider both are valid and we should not fight over this lol. A lot of words change depending on the country, just like what happens with, for instante, the US and the UK. Example: I think they call digestives "biscuits" in the UK, while they say cookies in the US. Chips in the UK, french fries in the US. Chips in the US, crisps in the UK, etc.

This actually helped me understand how certain people who speak the 'same' language tend to use different words for the same thing! I'm British and learning Mexican Spanish. Duo asked me what 'soup' was in Spanish, and up until that point he told me only one word: sopa. So of course! Es sopa, si? But I got it wrong. He insisted it was caldo, which was a word I never saw before. I was so confused and kinda angry! After some research, turns out that caldo can be used to refer to soup, but not often. It's generally agreed upon that sopa is the right word for soup, and that caldo means 'broth'. So I did learn something! I learned sopa is soup, caldo is broth, and that I should have gotten that question right.
@noname-xp2jd
Жыл бұрын
Yes you would have been correct and still are but here in Mexico which is the Spainish dielect I grew up speaking and listening caldo is actually used more than sopa and is used interchangeably with stew soup and broth of course in is deepened on region because in Mexico we also have that stuff, so my costal dialect might differ from I'm guessing a central one.
@functiondisruption
Жыл бұрын
@@noname-xp2jd I see, this is interesting! I suppose the goal wasn't to get the question correct, it was to learn a new word. From that question, I researched, commented on this video, and had someone further explain the word to me. From this, I now know what someone means when they say caldo, and no matter how many questions I get incorrect, this is the success I have found. Thank you!

I had a teacher told us to never use google translated due to this common mistake when learning Spainish or other languages because one word can mean something different in that state or region and also google translate forms the languages weirdly. Good example was trabajar " to work" but again trabajar can be a different version.
@functiondisruption

@@christmasanchez1.038 Could you further explain your example to me? Trabajar means 'to work', I'm familiar with this and is the word I use. What do you mean 'version'? Version of what? I'm always looking to learn more Spanish, thank you!

Fun fact, English has the same problems just with different words. One of the most famous examples of this is biscuits. In America, “biscuits” are delicious fluffy bread things, also called dinner rolls despite hardly ever being rolled so idk where THAT name comes from. Anyway, in England, “biscuits” are COOKIES instead! And even if you never leave America and think you’re safe from one word meaning different things to different people… you gonna get barbecued
