This Masquerade, by Leon Russell (1972). Also covered by Helen Reddy, The Carpenters, and George Benson, for whom it became a signature tune in 1976. I’ve always found the melody and chords attractive, even though, with its 16-measure A section (or AA = 8+8), followed by a 16-measure bridge, the proportions feel a bit off, at least until you get used to it. Russell’s original version has a creepy intro, like a Stephen King soundtrack, but then settles into a quasi-Latin feel. For my uke version, I just press the bossa button.
Also on the uke side, I decided to use my Pono baritone for this, which puts the piece in a more vocally accessible B minor, instead of E minor on the tenor. Nothing very complicated about the chords, but they sound cool on the uke. One trick at the closing vamp figure: it’s basically Bmin7 alternating with E13(9), 7777 to 6779. (these would = Emin7 / A13(9) on the tenor.) But for the very last chord, I leave the bass on the note B, which changes the 6779 chord into Bm6/9, very cool, but probably too subtle to mean anything to anyone except yours truly. Anyhow, it serves as yet another illustration of the mutability of chord names on the uke. As a thought experiment, take the same 6779, and try out every possible bass note against it, to see how many different identities it can have. And then try to come up with a ii-V-I-type chord progression to contextualize each one. (Hint: Unless I’m wrong, this chord has six possible names, with the other six belonging on Star Trek. But maybe you’re from Star Trek too!)
Which comes back to the eternal elephant-in-the-room uke question: You just got your first uke and someone tells you the open strings 0000 can be both C6 and Am7? You gotta be kidding, what’s with that?!?!
And finally: I recorded this song a few years ago, but decided to come back to it, partly to refresh my memory, and partly as an excuse to share the pdf, which is something I wasn’t doing back then. Have fun.
