About the older hardware in the Deck, I think the proper comparison would be to game consoles. Having a predetermined performance standard just takes all the guesswork out of optimization. It's not about performance, it's about the developer workflow. There is definitely some compromise going on, but the Deck isn't too old for the cons to outweigh the pros yet. Sent from my Steam Deck
@thingsiplay

I agree, but it's not entirely comparable to consoles. The big difference is, consoles don't change (mostly). On PC hardware, you are not bound to Steam Deck, and can build or buy other hardware to play same game. What I mean is, look at the Nintendo Switch; the people are stuck. If the Deck was this bad as a hardware, then people could just buy an alternative. So the upgrade cycle on PC based hardware can't be compared entirely to consoles. Just to be clear, I agree with you, just wanted to expand my thoughts on this topic a bit.

I almost feel like the Steam Deck OLED Windows drivers are a kind of performance art by Valve. It's like some sort of bizarro world where there are zero Linux driver issues and Windows users need to read websites to download and install half-implemented drivers. It puts a smile on my face. (Linux user since '99, Linux only since '16.)

Regarding the Steam Deck as reference hardware, it turns out that the real magic in having a single platform to target is that you can compile the software using a ton of optimizer flags specific to that hardware. However, software that supports a wide range of hardware usually doesn't do that.

Hardware stagnation is a thing. It's been years since the race for performance ended. Newer GPUs are either wasted on AI and crypto, or used for 4k, 8k gaming. For a handheld screen the current chips are already enough, and the few games with poor performance are more about bad optimization than the hardware being obsolete.
@roadrash2005
Ай бұрын
Yeah, I remember thinking as a kid that new hardware would allow more interesting gameplay like the move to 3d did, unfortunately we are still playing ps2 games just with better graphics basically.
PC gaming is not just about the latest hardware. I think it's very useful for developers to have a 'standard' to target for acceptable performance. And I think, most of the time, the Steam Deck makes a good target. I think, honestly, that developers like having a very predictable machine to target. It's close enough to more modern hardware that optimizing for it doesn't really hurt you for more advanced hardware, especially since that hardware is going to be just generally faster anyway.

Windows update breaking/nuking GRUB is nothing new, it's what made me move to Linux full time. Easy fix, but incredibly annoying. Well, actually what made me do the full switch was when Windows tried to wipe a SEPARATE DRIVE because it wasn't NTFS formatted.

I love seeing these charts of like the top 20 or 30 games played on Steam or Steam Deck and having never played a single one of them. I do own a copy of Skyrim on the 360 but I never actually ended up playing it and then I do own Diablo 1 not Diablo 4 and I did play some of that but that's the closest.

here's the thing, consoles work because they are basic development targets. If you buy an xbox or ps5, you're getting the exact same internal hardware and software as anyone else who buys that same box. PCs have always been super customizable, which is to say fragmented. you can't insure that the person next to you has the exact same hardware you do. Now what Valve is doing is actually a great thing here. By pushing the SteamDeck and having it get adopted like it has, we now have a baseline for what a device like this is, hardware wise. Now developers can target the SteamDeck as a baseline for minimum requirements and know instantly that a vast majority of pc owners can play the game since most PCs sold these days are at least equivalent to a SteamDeck in performance, even if you factor in PCs with those integrated graphics chipsets. This extends beyond just the Deck and other handheld PCs, this has the potential to set target baselines for PC gaming as a whole which will dramatically improve ports and hopefully help with optemization overall.

Gotta agree with you on the standardised hardware thing. It's a development target. Even if you don't want a Steam Deck, it's great news for anyone with older PC hardware. Any games optimised for the Deck are also going to run fine on an older PC. I'm in a particularly good position: I've got a PC with older hardware that's all AMD, so I just look for anything Deck users play!

Here's the thing: it amazes me that there are people who play AAA releases. Period. Like... Aside from Doom and whatever Valve's got in store for Half-Life (or Portal), I'm just not interested in AAA games anymore. Sony's only single player offerings are cookie cutter open world games like Spider Man. It's like... where's the innovation?

16:43 Yes, indeed I have. Why? For one thing - Games that don't run on SteamOS without bigger risks. In my case, Honkai Star Rail for example. In practice, I currently don't play it THAT often and thus have removed Windows from my Deck for now, but if I ever feel like I need it again, I'm happe the new drivers are there and will put it back in my Dual Boot (which IS possible, even if Valve does not offer their own solution to it. But with CloverBoot or what it's called, it's stupid simple and even very intuitive). But another thing that SteamOS FOR SOME REASON fails at, when I feel it really shouldn't no device gives me as horrible a Remote Play Performance as my Steam Deck in SteamOS. And even just installing Windows on the Deck and Remote Playing from there is a notable improvement. I don't know why. And I dearly hope Valve fixes it. Their OWN Remote Play Solution on their OWN device performs significantly worse, than putting an unsupported, slower Operating System and using any other Remote Play Option with it. Like, even Steam Remote Play itself works better on Deck-Windows than on Deck-SteamOS.

Wukong I believe the reason why they had this agreement to limit what people can talk, is, because lot of reviewers start talking about politics about China and feminism and all sorts of unrelated stuff. So I can fully understand why they did that. We have seen this time and time again. And what they are asking is not even outlandish. I'm against taking freedom of Speech. Don't get me wrong. But in this instance, it is "understandable" and maybe even "tolerable", as they just want people to review the game as a game.
@MrGamelover23
Ай бұрын
But you're basically not even allowed to talk about anything related to China while playing a Chinese game rooted in Chinese mythology based on pretty much the biggest work to come out of China's history. PS5s are flying off the shelves in China, partially due to this game. Oh crap, I just broke their rule. That being said, I'm fascinated by the concept of games that are based on or inspired by books, even though I'm too lazy to read. And Genshin Impact got me interested in Chinese culture. So I'm way more interested in this game than I would have been otherwise.
@MrGamelover23

@thingsiplay

@@MrGamelover23 No, it does not prohibit talking about the related Chinese mythology. It prohibits only talking about current politics related to game industry and news in China. As said, I don't think its a good thing to silence people and control what they can talk or not. I'm just being sympathetic partly, because lot of game review outlets use these reveiew platforms to misinform and talk about politics and useless stuff that has nothing to do with the game. As for the mythology, it's called Journey To The West. The Japanese anime series Dragon Ball (before it became Z) is heavily inspired by this Chinese mythology too. In example Son Goku is riding on this flying cloud, and can transform into a monkey (monster) and there is this pig head guy too. And lot more. Just wanted mention this, as many don't realize it.

I agree, and honestly is not an outlandish thing to ask people to focus on the game. And if for some reason they really want to talk about such topics, they can always refuse to take the key and buy the game themselves, those 'guidelines' are only for the people taking the review code not 'everyone' as the video fails to mention.

You have to remember that the developer is based in China and is beholden to the CCP. When giving the game to influencers to advertise for them, anything the influencers do that seems anti-CCP goes back to the Black Myth devs as they'll be seen as collaborators. So they have to walk on egg shells. Also, turns out the IGN drama was all drummed up by an ideologue/activist with a chip on her soldier who took mistranslated tweets and ran with it.

The main reason I see is that most english speaking media/influencers turn to normalize spreading the typical propaganda at every chance when something has any link to china. I find it sad that a note like that was necessary, most don''t realize how disgusting that constant slander is. Nothing wrong in pointing at issues but the hypocrisy tells. A bit like your take about CCP and collaborators, I find it weird. UK has far worse privacy concerns but never would we hear a tales of politics control over media, while it is heavily happening.
