Lava rock looked down upon in koi industry but it works great! Just like they don't want you to use salt from home depot. But buy a 16 to 20 oz for $30, or can 40lb bag for $5.

Thanks for the info. I’m new to all of this, but thinking of building my own pond. Would you still need the bio media if the pond didn’t have any fish, like if it was just a swim pond? Also, how often do you have to change out the lava rocks in your bio media filter bag? Btw, really like your energy.

Lava rock has saved me a lot of fish. It was my first media when i learned about biological filtration. Also when you clean it wouldn't it be better to lave the lava rock in the water instead of on a rock in the sun? I know its only there for a few but it seems like if the lava rock dries out at all for any length of time the bacteria will die on it.

Oh no Alex u never poor the water back into the pond I water my plants with it cause it’s Rich in nitrites and excellent fertilizer for plants and flowers ... and as far as taking two buckets of water out of my pond isn’t a real big deal because my my pond is 600gallons so it really doesn’t even make a dent on it so I don’t have to refill the pond 🤙🏽
