When I listen to this, I think of a workaholic business man, who has given his all to being successful, regardless of what he has to do. By hook or crook, so to speak. Only to realize he's been being used his whole life to the point of just being a stranger in his own home. Just remember that line about all the bad blood slowing and turning to stone. Dragging our subject down. It's important, because `the stone` is referred to several times. (Even on other albums.)

My favorite Pink Floyd song. There are also early versions of Dogs and Sheep with alternate lyrics. The concept is basically splitting people into 3 types. The Pigs are the people on top, the Dogs are essentially the cutthroats out for themselves. Someone made a video for this song using the animated Animal Farm movie. It actually syncs up really well.

A lot of his songs are very funny some are very raunchy some are just instrumentals and even up to the point of being a symphony and some are just plain old rock and roll. The lyrics of the entire song are just overall brilliant. I was going to post a few of my favorites, but couldn't decide so here's everything: You gotta be crazy, you gotta have a real need You gotta sleep on your toes, and when you're on the street You gotta be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed And then moving in silently, down wind and out of sight You gotta strike when the moment is right without thinking And after a while, you can work on points for style Like the club tie, and the firm handshake A certain look in the eye and an easy smile You have to be trusted by the people that you lie to So that when they turn their backs on you, You'll get the chance to put the knife in You gotta keep one eye looking over your shoulder You know it's going to get harder, and harder, and harder as you get older And in the end you'll pack up and fly down south Hide your head in the sand, Just another sad old man All alone and dying of cancer And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw around So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone Dragged down by the stone (stone, stone, stone, stone, stone) (Really cool guitar change and lyric speed here) I gotta admit that I'm a little bit confused Sometimes it seems to me as if I'm just being used Gotta stay awake, gotta try and shake off this creeping malaise If I don't stand my own ground, how can I find my way out of this maze? Deaf, dumb, and blind, you just keep on pretending That everyone's expendable and no-one has a real friend And it seems to you the thing to do would be to isolate the winner And everything's done under the sun And you believe at heart, everyone's a killer Who was born in a house full of pain Who was trained not to spit in the fan Who was told what to do by the man Who was broken by trained personnel Who was fitted with collar and chain Who was given a pat on the back Who was breaking away from the pack Who was only a stranger at home Who was ground down in the end Who was found dead on the phone Who was dragged down by the stone

The main concept of this album is a criticism of society in general: Dogs are people who repress and defend those in power. Pigs are people who have money,

"And after a while you can work on points for style," is my favorite line in the song. I dated a narcissist once and I didn't understand what she was about until one day I REALLY listened to that lyric. I think this song saved my life. That whole bit about Florida always gave me chills and gave me a pause about some of my life plans. Funny thing is I ended up in FL- no cancer, knock on wood.

Lucky Floyd found you at the right time and you listened. That type of relationship will make you question your reality and whole existence. Trust me, I had more than one of those relationships myself. Didn't find out about narcs and those type of relationships till after a lot of damage was done. Still trying to heal but much better now. You dodged a bullet my friend

I was 17 when this came out, of course listened to it on vinyl and thought this is so good, Of course I appreciate way more now than then because I never caught the reference of Orwell's animal farm. Hell we were all smoking mother nature together and enjoying Pink Floyd. Had my head in the sand as the saying goes.....

You're discovering it the same way we did in 1977. Just looking at an album cover. Plus the lyrics that were printed on it (or on the inner sleeve)
