As a Pilates teacher, I can tell you that sometimes a person walks in the room and they just make us feel nervous for one reason or another. Mostly because we want that new person to love Pilates and come back!! And it can become easy to get hyper focused on that one person. For me, some recent people who made me feel super nervous are: a random hot guy (it’s primarily ladies at my studio), super fit young girl (we have an older clientele and I want more younger people to join!), a group of snotty clients who complain all the time… I’m sure this girl was having the same feelings… You were new and different, and she really wanted you to feel comfortable and wanted you to come back. Unfortunately, she made you feel uncomfortable. 😂😬 I was glad to hear at the end of the video that you planned to come back anyway! I’m willing to bet that instructor went home feeling embarrassed!
@Vanessa_Elaine
Жыл бұрын
Yes I did go back and I wasn’t the only new person there and maybe she was trying to make me feel more comfortable but me being the only black person in a room doesn’t intimidate me at all lolll and I would rather people just be or act normal than to single me out that makes it worse. It makes me nervous or feel like a I’m being single out bc of race bc if there was a new white girl ( which there were) she didn’t treat them the same. It makes me feel weird but the next class after this was amazing and the instructor actually helped me with poses and that’s the only extra attention that is needed for any new client joining your class for the first time
@jennifermannfitness

I can see why that made you feel weird. I’m so glad you had a better experience with a different instructor! just wanted to say thanks for kind of giving direction as to why this happens. It's very clear most of the time that people are just making an effort to be kind and inviting but this happens to all of us,all the time. A good way to make sure we feel comfortable is to do a great job at teaching. A clear,informative class is the best advocate. either way,a slight explanation of thought is nice to hear because this happens to probably all of us and not just in exercise groups,it can be alot and tiring and make us think "what the hell is wrong with these folks". We're just people. And as far as interest in your class goes--an engaging,attentive teacher does the work for you. The interest is already there,that'd why we showed up

Story time in the middle of a Pilates class is just unprofessional, maybe you can crack a joke or two in transition to keep it light if you have the time, but the focus should always be to get people in the proper rhythm of breath, stabilized in the right form, using the right muscle groups. That’s the goal as an instructor (.) If you’re not doing that, you can get some injuries walking out of your class. My advice to you is to go with an instructor that keeps the chit chat to a minimum and really focuses on actually instructing the class. Keep it up tho, lot of benefits to the work!

Black folks don’t need all that just act normal. What I don’t like is when instructors encourage everybody around you especially if it’s an established class and clearly you are visiting. Yoga Instructors are famous for correcting others and not me. I went to training and asked the instructors if I was doing everything perfectly. It caught on and then they started coming over to me.

I’ve been doing classes for 5 years using class pass, I have taken classes mostly in Atlanta, but I also attend classes in LA, Miami, and Houston. I take Boxing, Lagree, Pilates, barre, you name it and no there aren’t a lot of black women in the classes, nor any really teaching them either, but their aren’t a lot of black women in my gym either. It doesn’t bother me at all, Everyone usually stays to themselves unless they go with a friend, but one thing I can say the women are toned and fit AF and because of those classes I am too.

Most of the comments here are ridiculous. Since when are white people not allowed to talk about big behinds. It's not exclusive to black people. Also I don't think it's fair to put up a video of someone accusing them of things. Basically I'm not hearing what you think you're hearing.

When you don't have friends of a different ethnicity and you learn all your social cues from Twitter/Insta/TikTok - this happens.... At the same time, I've never had a white friend who couldn't talk from sun up to sun down about the most random things. I mean, they could make an entire dissertation about the leaves on a tree just to have something to talk about, and then flow into how it reminds them of their first love which turns into a story about their childhood which turns into too much information and...whew girl. It's a talent, really. To say so much and leave you utterly confused about why and how and where, lol. She tried.

I’ve experienced this same thing in yoga classes. It’s not inclusive it’s weird behavior and it makes people feel singled out.
@tiahnarodriguez3809

I’ve experienced this before and it’s them not knowing how to show that they see you, and want you to feel included, so they overcompensate and try to appear relatable/ knowledgeable about us when they would get a better reaction by just treating us normally. My African America literature professor was like this and it was massively cringe. I learned more about his white guilt than I did about black literature.
