Probably the rarest is what was called “air buoy”. It was a powered air source for shallow diving without a traditional compressed air backpack type tank set up.

WOW, I found them, the Johnson was called the Air Buoy and the Evinrude was called the Aquanaut… the search begins!!! Thanks for the tip, those are so cool.

Nice video. A couple points of information on the 1.2 HP Johnson colt: 1) Its the same as the earlier 2HP models. OMC derated it because they started measuring the horsepower at the prop instead of at the engine output. This became the standard for all outboards in 1986. Prior to that, Mercury was measuring at the prop and Johnson /Evinrude was measuring at the crankshaft. 2) The engine was designed to run 50:1 oil ratio. Everything that I've read say don't run 100:1, it will shorten the life of the motor. I think that they tried to specify 100:1 and then went back to 50:1.

Thanks for the great info as usual. Very interesting about the ratings standardization, I know that happened with cars as well (crank vs. wheel) but had no idea something similar happened with outboards. That 50:1 tip is great, 100:1 sounds a bit crazy, I wonder if they did that to appease the folks that didn’t like the perceived extra pollution from 2-strokes because of the smoke or perhaps for overall cheaper operation?

They will run quite fine on 100:1. The issues started showing up when the motors sat idle. There was not enough residual oil to keep the internal parts from rusting, ie crank journals and needle bearings.

The big shots use to keep them in the trunk of there Buick for rental boats back in the day. a realy big deal is they hAVE A EXTERNAL GAS TANK. uNLIKE THE 3hp witched leaked and only held about under a gal of gas. They did make a one gal ex tank or a 3gal tank. The drive pin was the weak part of the thing. When you broke that it was a bit of a pain to replace. But the motor was two cylinder and smooth. The lower unit it the famous weedless unit and a massing option

A weedless lower unit, I have heard of weedless props but never a whole lower unit. WOW! I was assuming it was that shape to fit in the case or something. Thank you for the awesome info and thanks for watching!
