Here's a trick: Separate you filter from your lens by some mm. You can use an equal step up filter for this (like a 77mm-77mm adapter ring). It will often remove the reflections you mention.

Your videos have been an excellent walkthrough of these filters. I'm going with the pro-mist 1/4 on a Nikon Z7. Cheers!

Great video. It looks like the soft fx3 is great if you wanted to recreate those cheesy 70s movies, where they went a but crazy with the vaseline.

I've been using the soft fx 1 and 2 for portraits and I prefer 1 over 2 for most people. Soft fx 2 is a huge jump also.

I bought Soft FX 3 for this video because i loved the look. I have a Nikon D3300 with a ⌀52mm lens and the effect is barely there, barely noticeable, I tried to do some lighting like in this video but it just looks almost the same as NO filter. What could be happening?

Thanks for a nice video, great examples and explanation. Maybe someone else mentioned this in the comments but you can stack these filters. That way you could get a Soft Fx 2 1/2 by stacking your Soft FX 2 with a Soft Fx 1/2.

You can achieve a 2 1/2 by stacking a 2 and a 1. In the Tiffen system each level up is twice as strong, so if 3 is twice as strong as 2 and 2 is twice as strong as 1, stacking a 2 and a 1 puts you half way between 2 and 3.

You could (a long time ago) get SoftFX filters in a square filter format and stack them. So you could put in a 1 + a 1/2 to get 1.5. Look for Cokin or Lee filter holders as an example.

Tiffen makes fine filters. I use the following: · Tiffen Soft FX #1 52mm · Tiffen Diffusion #3 67mm · Tiffen SoftNet Diffusion #1b 67mm · Tiffen Black Pro Mist #1 soft focus 77mm · Tiffen Black Pro Mist #3 soft focus 77mm

TIFFEN Describes the: The Soft FX filters as attending to the reduction of RESOLUTION & CONTRAST (Reduction in resolution to assist with softening wrinkles and blemishes). The Black Pro Mist as attending to diffusing BLACK HALATION (Increase in halation, blooming, or spreading of illumination around highlights).

Thanks for your video. In my opinion, FX 2 is still too soft. I would go with FX1 or FX 1/2.. Or Pro Mist.. hard to choose.

Excellent! Do you think it is better to have Tiffen filters or use custom Luts made in Davinci resolve for better looking skin if we work in beauty?Thank you

Both can work. But to me there's just something special about doing it in camera while shooting. There's just something missing that you can't really recreate in post in my pretentious opinion...

Hey man, I recently bough the soft fx3 but my images and video don’t look like how your video looks while using the filter, do you have any idea why I feel as if i am not getting the desired look? I use a lumix g7 25mm f1.7.

The effect of the filter changes based on the type of lighting, length of the lens, and size of the sensor. He's using a camera with a very small sensor so, all else being equal, the effect will be stronger with his camera.

Great video! Do you have a 1/8 Promist. I'm thinking about double staking a 1/8th with a Soft FX 1 or 2 and would love your thoughts if you've tried that!
@filterboy8750

Thanks! No sorry I don't have a 1/8 and never actually tried combining filters. Might do a video on that some day though. Combining the BPM and the Soft FX is definitely something that has been done for some movies. I think Tiffen Company even talks about it on their filter comparison video so watching that might help you out.
