Do your tones sound tight or squeaky? Here's a way for you to improve your tone and airflow! 👍
When do we encounter a narrowing of our throat when playing the trumpet?
This usually happens to us when playing a crescendo, jumping to higher notes, or playing in a high register for a long time! 💡
How can we train this out?
We always have an open throat and therefore a free flow of air as soon as our larynx opens. We always have that when we yawn. Of course we can imitate that or we can use a piece of hose or blow air through our open mouth pipe. Another possibility is loosening our lower jaw and singing open vowels: a, u or o! Here, too, our throat opens.
When transferring to our instrument, it is important to keep coming back to these exercises. Play a sustained tone, then chromatic and later diatonic up and down. Always make sure your throat stays open. If this is not the case, repeat the exercises just mentioned! 👍
I hope I was able to help you with my thoughts, exercises, tips and tricks on this important trumpet topic/video. Here's to a good cooperation and always remember: Stay tuned is the motto!
See you soon and Ciao!!! Your Nico 🎺
