Something I also did not plug in the video that is worth mentioning is the IG post I made a few weeks back featuring Sara. She was doing something with Sonny Webster and her Squat looked.... less than optimal. It is of my opinion that she has officially hit the point in her career where she is doing whatever she can to get as far as she can. This is why I think the injuries have been popping up, and why she finished where she did this past weekend. The squat with Webster was at near maximial load (which has absoluetly no rational at this time of year in those positions) and was as clear an indicator as any for her perfromance. She must rebuild the foundation from which she can work with if she wants any chance. The thing is it may be too late. Cotler would be a great option to help her here, so she is in good hands. PS. The farther away from Sonny Webster anyone can get the better.

I think you nailed an aspect of sports/athletics that people don't focus on enough. That is the mental side of sports/athletics. My dad used to always tell me as a kid that sports teach you lessons you can't learn anywhere else. You learn who you are on the field because in sports you have to make a choice when you get knocked down. You either stay down and quit or you get back up and keep playing. Injuries in sports really teach you who you are. You can come back better than ever and be a monster (Fraser/A. Peterson/any number of pitchers after Tommy John's surgery) or you can lose your mental edge and never quite be the same. These athletes are a dime a dozen and are very often forgotten. Sara is at a point in her athletic career, she is going to have to make a choice. Either she is willing to go back into that dark place and to confront that darkness or she isn't. If she decides she is and then goes whole-hearted into that place, her skill set is good enough to win. If she decides that she isn't. The rest of the field has proven that they are good enough to beat her at the elite levels of competition.

I think my fifth gear is reserved for real life situations now. Making tough calls and dealing with that dark mental place has now moved away from the gym. For me, the only place I feel I want to push insanely hard at is the least risk areas (mostly ergs and bikes) The lifts and gymnastics although key to athleticism and strength as we age, isn’t as much of a priority anymore. Having said that I bench three times a week. I think it’s why powerlifting is more popular with 40+ as opposed to weightlifting. Yes it’s heavier, but there is far less risk. I don’t butterfly anymore (haven’t since 2016) as I need my shoulders for play time with the kids. I guess it’s priorities and yes some people choose to manage both, but for me I’d rather know that I can move well and I’m healthy. Peace and love as always

It is hard to want to go to that place over and over again and I can not imagine Sara wanting to do so when it doesn't get her where she wants to get to. I 100% understand what you're saying. I'm not some games competitor but I'm 53 and have placed right outside the top 100 a few times in the open and have done AGOQs. CrossFit is just as much mental as it is physical and at my age I'd say it's even more mental if you're competing. I have to pick my spots or have a goal and very seldom go to that dark place anymore. I started doing tactical games last year so that was a goal to make it to nationals (which I did 😀). Or I have to pick someone in the gym that I absolutely can't lose to. The young kids have no idea what I'm talking about because they're not as old and/or they haven't done CrossFit as long and they just go go go. I will try to make a run at 55s in a year and see just how good I can be. It's just hard to stay in it mentally year after year after year.

Injuries, slow recovery, and just drive has all changed. Now, I workout and lift for longevity rather than ego. I am always having to adjust to and accept reality and and change my goals accordingly. It doesn't mean we quit living or doing what we love. But it will look different over time.

cf media tried so hard to make Sara happen. I used to see it watching her, she was a dog but when she was in pain she lived in that moment in her head. Seemed like she couldn’t just go dark and stay there. I think she almost made it to the top of the podium and then started to realize how much she had to do just to stay there and couldn’t make the push. I believe I read that in her prime she trained by herself and didn’t train with any other athletes? I think that was important as well. It’s not a thing for every athlete, but I can’t go to my own dark place without someone next to me. It just never feels worth it. The dark place thing is a great idea to touch on Andrew. I used to do it routinely with local competitions in my silly amateur days. I remember blowing peoples minds with my unbroken Karen. During that time I had to make a choice when high volume wall balls came up, knowing what I could do and how it felt, “ok I gotta go to that dark spot again.” Man now as a 33 year old dad, nah, no need to go that hard anymore. @@ErikDoesStuff1711 ok that’s all understandable I did not know those details. It still seems like he could still be a good coach. Don’t matter if he popped for PEDs he seems to have an amazing understanding for the techniques and how to explain it to people.

@@ErikDoesStuff1711 because he’s mostly coaching crossfitters and weightlifters who are likely just everyday lifters not high level athletes that’s why.

This is absolutely wrong. I'm not saying she has the ability to be as competitive as she was but her current competition results are due to the setback of her injury. 1. People always think her best years were 2015 - 2017. Research her competitive pedigree from 2018 - 2020. 2020 she actually took the lead from Tia on Day 2 of Wodapalooza. She won Dubai and consistently beat Laura, Annie, and Kara in competition. She won the open in 21 and then gets injured. 2. Since the injury the only events/test she has done well in are long pain cave workouts where she has to go to the dark place. See win from last year semifinals. See 2 place finish from chipper event at Wodapalooza this year. 3. You can tell her mechanics have shifted in how she moves and squats since being injured. Her limiting factor is clearly physical and not mental. She hit a 210 snatch in 2019 strength in depth. She only hit 185 this year. It's clearly the injuries and not the unwillingness to hurt or the desire to win holding her back. From 2015 - 2021, her average competition placing when healthy was 1.89.

She was one spot out and had one bad workout. Things happen people have bad workouts and bad days. It’s ridiculous to ridicule someone for a on the day mistake Sara will most definitely be back in this space next year

In my opinion she has to focus on volume in gymnastic movements, combined with light to medium heavy workouts from 2-20min. This might be a chance to rebuild and re-qualify.

@@hillerfit she should get rid of most games training (swimming, zone 2...) an try to get better at typical CF Wods. Most Workouts around 8-12 min and some with Fran-intensity and some longer chipper Workouts 16-20min

All depends if she wants to go back to University or not... but teams would be good til she hits 35?? But I didn't enjoy the semi's series.. coverage was crap and some of the events like 6 isn't the Crossfit id pay to watch.
