The summer of 84 was my last summer in my garden apartment we bought a house who’s completion was sept. It was an exciting happy time for me. I was never a mall rat or fan of them except when they were open air malls which had some charm. Malls have taken a beating between the pandemic and Amazon and the closure of some anchor department stores. They were good for senior mall walkers in winter or rainy days. Shag carpeting was past it’s prime from the 60’s and 70’s. And mid century homes really were from the older eras way before the 80’s. The popular decor of the 80’s was considered contemporary or modern and featured lots of pastel colors lots of rose and grey. The tvs used either rabbit ears or a whole house antenna on the roof and around mid eighties primitive cable service emerged using a box that featured movies and some retail sales we had one called hometco. Mustangs from 74 through early 90 were generation three most of them very small with crappy motors and much less sales then the first generation starting in 64. The generation 5 started by Ioccoca (spelled wrong I’m sure) was the beginning of the vaulted muscle car including the gt and Shelby to compete with dodge gm and mopar even amc. These were worth owning Regan had a landslide win and the mood of our country was quite a bit more civil then now. It had its challenges for sure including aids but without constant access to news we were less hysterical which was very sad for those with aids. Your story captures the basic environment very well with your own little rosey lens which I liked but of course my brain made a few turns because the food court was gross all purveyors were chain stores with fast food stuff even the pretzels were nowhere like nyc or ball game ones. In my neck of the woods if a teen girl even one of magnificent beauty laid across the hood of someone’s mustang or trans am they would have been pushed off! The perfume that the stores attacked you with wasn’t the old lady stuff it was the hot musky designer stuff my significant other wore white shoulders so the store smelled like her. It’s very hard to capture more recent years because the world was becoming more diverse and complex and we haven’t left too much glorified memories but our memory if we lived it is rich and much more stable and courteous then gleened from first glance. Thanks for the memories

My references were definitely influenced by upstate NY. All the homes in town had those wood panels still. Mirror-paneled walls, and an old gold plush rug. My grandmother even replaced hers with thicker piles mid-80s. I do recall how long it took for trends to influence towns just two hours north of NYC. My grandmother pushed the fashion on me- from clothes to asymmetrical haircuts and blue nail polish and let me say that those new trends weren’t received well as a five year old kid in a small town!
