In this video, James Binnion, owner of James Binnion Metals Arts, demonstrates his preferred methods for properly melting silver alloys to minimize porosity and oxidation.
That looks amazing! Great tutorial too. Im going to try cut a crucible. Thank you

I love this! I earned a Master's degree in metalsmithing/jewelry and as soon as I finish my doctorate I'll be smiting metal again.

I had no idea you could get a PhD in metal working, I would have thought it was a trade-track profession. Is it an art degree or something people would get for more general purposes as well?

Thanks a lot, I've done much silver brazing and understand the requirement of flux, but had not considered the idea of a reducing flame to cast, which is what I would like to do, lots of good tips and great set up

Great video - does it matter when you add the flux? e.g can you add it a the time of placing the grain in the crucible?

🤔How does this compare to a small eclectic melting furnace? I bought the 1kg Tilt-Pour Electro-Melt Furnace last month from Pepe Tools and have yet to do any silver casting but plan to. as I currently understand, the furnace will create a near-free oxygen environment...and I can pore it like a jug of water into a mold minimizing exposure to air.

What to do if the silver already has absorbed enough oxygen to be a problem?
