Agreed: it would have been nice and convincing to actually SEE where and how the quails are kept in reality. These birds suffer terrible abuse by farmers. When some egg laying hens are not cages, almost all quails are.

Thanks for that, lovely intro videos, one wee trick I know (learned randomly from a documentary about people in antarctic research bases needing to preserve eggs) - is that if you roll your eggs in olive oil and pop them in egg box in fridge and turn every few weeks, they can last up to a year. I have tried this and eaten 11 month old eggs and were good as new! Simple test when ready to use if unsure, rotten eggs float so just pop in some water and if stay at the bottom you are good to go. Should add i am in Europe where eggs are sold unwashed with the bloom on so might not do in US as thing wash prior to sale, but works well with home raised poultry of course : )

If I wanted to buy some hatching eggs from you, how would I go about doing that? Also, do you have an incubator you could recommend for someone starting out like me? I'm seriously considering raising quail for their eggs and I would love to hatch my own. I'm newish chicken mommy and I am in LOVE with them so far. I've been thinking about quail raising as long as I've been thinking about chicken raising and now that I have my chicks (8 weeks old now and thriving!), I think I would like to take the jump into Quail raising. That all being said, how many Quail do you recommend for a first timer and how much space do they need per bird? Also, do the males get protective and feisty sometimes like male roosters can? This is only my second video so far of yours and I love it so much! #NewSubscriber!

Thanks! So the larger 20%+ birds are for meat, as you said, but for breeding too? Do the smaller eggs not hatch?
@KelloggGarden
4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, when rasing quail such as a jumbo Coturnix, you will want to feed them differently depending on if they're being bred for meat or eggs. If raising them for eggs we recommend feeding them 20% plus protein feed for the first three weeks of their life. Then, drop them down to between 14% to 16% protein feed. This feeding schedule gives the birds the boost they need but prevents them from growing as large as their genetics want them to be. This creates a slightly smaller bird that will lay slightly smaller eggs but a lot more of them compared to a larger bird. If raising a bird for processing and meat, we recommend feeding them 20% plus protein feed for the first 6 to 8 weeks. We hope this provides some clarification and answers to your questions. If you have any additional questions we're happy to help!

Yes. I raise my own meat and it is very very hard to waste meat. When you buy from a store there isn't a connection and it's just meat. When you raised it, you killed it, you processed it, it's not just meat its life.

@KelloggGarden
3 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, we reached out to Franchesca and her response was "If they are smothering one another as adults then there is some lack in the coop space. For babies they are cold, if they are smothering one another then they are seeking heat. Smothering tends to happen as babies in the brooder where heat is required."

My research is that male makes the noise and females are fairly quite. U don't need the males for females to lay eggs but if u are looking to hatch eggs for babies, then you will need a male. Hope that helps.
