"specificity creates intimacy and relatability". i never really thought about that. i guess that's one of the reasons i love taylor's writing so much. when she gets into detail, i either feel included like i was there to witness it myself, or "yeah i know that feeling, i know what she means". you summarized that so well, it gives me an epiphany also i hope you get well soon 🧡 i miss the little "imagine" scenarios you put in and your teacup, but i'm glad you're well enough to upload

I’ve been a fan for Taylor for almost 11 years ( few weeks before the release of Speak Now). This song made me feel so happy, Yet so Vulnerable. It’s my fave Taylor song. Everytime I listen to this song I feel it’s like the winter and I feel like it’s my first time listen to it. Thank you🧡🧡

aww thank you for sharing that! made me smile reading your comment!💖 there definitely is something about this song, i always feel like it embraces you in a way LOL i know it's sad but it feels very calm and safe. i think it's the melody (specifically the guitar) and taylor's voice it's like snow is falling down softly and no one's stomped all over it yet...like you said it's vulnerable

really love your videos, you always give me a new perspective on her songs! I never thought of this song being a stream of consciousness but it makes so much more sense given the first line!

thank you so much!! ✨ i think the stream of consciousness interpretation also makes it more heartbreaking, b/c all the emotions are one-sided😭 glad it resonated w/ you!💖

First, I’d like to express my deep admiration for your work. Your interpretation is so deep, so concise, so well explained that you make me see and feel things that I hadn’t noticed. Thank you for that. About the car metaphor, I think you could also add that it could be referring to the life she left and he is still in. She is following a path that is different of what a small-town requires and of its way of living/maintaining yourself. Mud and truck indicates a country/rustic way of living, not necessarily bad, but not what she wanted, even though he stayed in it. She probably needed an LA way of living to achieve what she was longing for. She needed to leave the simplicity, leave the closer and warmer human relationships. I think it could mean a reference to what she left, him and this life, also in a nostalgic pedestal, as you said! I’d be really happy to hear your thoughts about this. Greeting from Brazil!!

thank you so much for your kind comment! i appreciate it 😊 i love how you're viewing the car metaphor! that fits the song so well! (there are probably not as many muddy tires in LA!) the muddy truck tires being a symbol for the life she left behind is a wonderful way to think about it. i think it also brings in a feeling of "being stuck" b/c it's hard to drive w/ tires like that...that feeling of "being stuck" is associated w/ the town she left behind so maybe she does feel more free in LA thanks for sharing your thoughts!!

Random thoughts: I definitely see this as the sister song to Dorothea and the same character. I think she does not say "you can call me babe for the weekend" etc. out loud. I agree with you it's like a stream of consciousness. I still don't fully understand the line "write this down". I feel like she does have soul-mate love for this person and may have been her soul mate, but the draw of the glamorous life in LA was too tempting in contrast to the small hometown. The Methodist detail is gorgeous. They way "so I'll go back to LA" and the beat changes in that moment is my fave part of the song. I feel like she feels obliged to live this other life in LA, even though it's only her putting that pressure on herself. The graphics were super aesthetic by the way, appreciated the chill vibes.

thank you for sharing your thoughts!! 😊✨ when she says "write this down" i think it's referring to her ex "writing down" that she's at her parent's house, so they don't forget....they know where to find her. it kind of shows desperation on part of the protagonist. i personally feel like "write this down" is just showing how serious the protagonist is about them being together while she's here. b/c in reality, there would be no reason to write down that she's staying at her parents, the ex would simply just remember that for me, that lyric reinforces the fact that the protagonist REALLY wants the ex to reach out to her. when you write something down there's a greater chance you'll remember it. again, i feel like it shows her emotional desperation hope that made sense!! and thank you for your kind words!! 💖

i’ve just found out that taylor wrote this song while drunk in the middle of the night and immediately went and listened to it more carefully as i had always overlook this one your analysis is amaaazing - i love how you dive in every little detail it really helps me visualise the story more vividly and the dorothea parallel it s crazy , I 100% SEE IT - so beautiful, but sad the story of these two fallen apart “soulmates” who though are far away from each other still think and deeply care about their past relationship althought i dont really get the car symbolism, you kind of convinced me with the connotation of the mud on the truck tires. luv your videos keep going :3

If the "we could just ride around" means driving and not riding ON each other in a sexual event, then the next repeated line could have a slightly different meaning? WE could just ride around, meaning they are both in the same car which could be a symbol for they are both making decisions for this love journey. And they, as two-person together, didn't pick the road that looks real good now. So this is kinda they are both agreeing to not pick that road but now both feel regretful as well. This might be a bit too over-analysed because it doesn't really make sense with the other lines in the song but it's just a cute little theory.

My other theory: I think you did talk about the symbolism and the effect of the diction of "shatter" and "break" from another video that I've watched of yours. You said shattering is a bit more intense and it's hard to put it back. But here, she breaks her own heart when she leaves her bed. SO it's suggestive that it's super easy to heal - if she just goes back to her bed... So she is aware of that but she's not doing it...
