You will like them. I just got the second one in the mail today and tested them together in peer-2-peer mode (using the RMS program) and they worked great. This will be the topic of my next video.

I'm not sure I understand your question. If you are using radios to make the link between the two computers then you will need a radio license to match the radio service you are operating in (provided that radio service permits data communications). For example, if you are using Amateur radios/frequencies, then you will need an Amateur Radio license. Packet between two computers using phone lines I don't believe required a license.

Thanks. I was using 2m in the video. The baud rate is 1200bps. Not fast by Internet standards - but faster than anyone can talk and send a message with 100% accuracy. Every prepper (with an Amateur license) should have a Packet TNC.

I have been thinking about getting into packet radio for a bit now. This might be the route I take cause I love building the kits.

I have ferrite chokes on all the cables and they did help some. I have found that I have to keep the antenna away from the TNC and the laptop. When the RF is close it causes the USB line to drop. This problem is more pronounced with my cheaper radios (Puxing and Wouxun) and less pronounced with my Kenwoods and Yaesus.

A friend held a TNC-X build session and it did take about 3 hours to build given a working example was near by. I have now used the TNC-X on a Yaesu FT8900R and Baofeng UV-5R. My Baofeng does lock up with a direct attached antenna but does work through an attic j-pole. I built a cable according to picture. A monitoring radio sound a tone at the end of transmission which is normal for the TNC-X.

Hey Hank! I was looking for TNC-X videos and found this one of yours that I haven't seen in like forever! I see that they now have one of these for the Raspberry Pi 2. Looks like you've now got another reason to get up to speed on the RPi! I just pulled the trigger a few minutes ago on the Pelican 1550 case that I plan to mount my RPi and FT-8900 in.

Wow, I miss this. Getting back into electronics and with this it reminds me of my TI 99 4A when I was kid sneaking transmissions from Texas to a guy in California. So it's been since I guess 1985 or so. What would be your baud rate? I new to Ham and recieved an mil equip. And a custom build, I believe is 2 meter, not sure. Nice work!

Any type of pulse either electromagnetic or nuclear with render all the ic's dead, even if you use a faraday screen to protect the internals experiments have show that any increase in static or pulse aftermath shock with disable all microprocessor circuitry. Now the same tests by amateurs have found, that valve technologies are some what different, the main reason is their latitude for voltage variation in the environment is far greater than component ic's. i have replicated such tests myself

I know this is quite an old video, but I watched this and have looked into getting one of these. Are you still using this today?? I noticed on a more recent video that in your shed you setup a node here in WV on the DAREN system using the Kantronics TNC. I am just wondering if it is worth the $88 to buy one of these and build it? Thanks in advance Juddie WD8WV

Would a ferrite clipped over the USB cable help with the EMI? What about when you put the cover on the TNC-X, does it work when you have the antenna close by?

really you need a Tnc via hardware if you have very good and much better tnc's via software for all platforms?.

This kit is nice and will packaged. Once you have packet then you can send email with your equipment (see my packet email vids with the Winlink dot org system). My second modem arrived in the mail today and everything tested good between two portables in the P2P mode. This will be the topic of my next vid.

will it work with a Mac?

Not sure what the question is. The TNC will work with Mac but you will need a Mac packet program. The RMSExpress program that I use does not come for the Mac OS.
