"Now he belongs to the ages." Lord knows we lost one America's most prolific and brilliant singer-songwriters and real deal performers. I lived in Gainesville FL on the same street as Tom's Dad Norm who kept a beat up old pickup out back that Tom used when he was visiting or playing his hometown. I saw that the truck was gone a few times and wished that I could at least get a glimpse of this amazing, Iconic American Rock Artists. That never happened, however, wishes can come true and with more than you wished for. My older brother is singer/songwriter and attended U.F. Tom Petty surpased the university for bringing Gainesville to life. It was a combination of seeing my bro play clubs like "Mad Monks" and "The Alibi" with beautiful women all around and Petty's popularity that inspired me to become a professional singer, songwriter, performer & Producer. Tom was playing in his hometown once while I was living there in 1994 and we tried very hard to get tickets but couldn't. The night after his big hometown show, I was playing at a little Italian place, I think it was called Nepalitano's. After playing my last song of the night people close to the stage were talking with me and I had to pee like a racehorse. When I finally broke away and headed for the restroom, I past a dark corner where I could just make out shadows from which I heard "sounded really good man." After a quick "thanks" in the mens room I was thinking "I know that voice" but couldn't place it. So on my way back out I took a good look and said thanks again. "You want to join us for a beer," sure I said just as I realized it was Tom Petty. I spent about an hour with him and someone from his road crew talking about music - precious moments I'll never forget. I'm very, very lucky and thankful to have kicked a few back with an idol and major influence on my life and career-~~~~~Peace be with you Tom, thanks for the treasure of brilliant music you've left us and for an hour I'll cherish until I pass - when I hope to kick a few more back with you....

Tom Petty was great for a very long time, going all the way back to the 1970's, but unlike a lot of musicians who are good in one era, Tom continually got better every decade. In the 1990's he was huge because instead of him trying to fit into the era, the world finally caught up to him. Man, he is missed.

In this song, Tom shows us a special secret, a special skill that many people have. Check out the singular people in the video; you can call 'em weirdos, but in THEIR minds they're all KINGS. As he says in the song, it's a place in his mind that he goes to. I like a lot of his songs, but this one is special. It's important that I can go to that place, so I can be King, since it seems that Darwin doesn't get to choose, so much, anymore. Watch the end of the video. Fortune passes everywhere.

For those here who care: Portraying several different cultures illustrates the idea of Cycles. Portraying people wearing old clothings and costumes in old decors, objects and antiques also illustrates the idea of Cycles. Things change. The world is revolving. Nothing is permanent. This video is about the United States of America "being King for a while". And ultimately falls down to decay and ruins and fades away. As all things do. And it ends on a silent God Bless America. Extremely talented Director. I think this is my favorite song and music video of the 90s.

Every man has an "empty box" in their minds where they like to go from time to time. It's the place of absolute peace and quiet; it's the time when a man's eyes become sort of glazed and they're just absent from the moment and time. No woman has ever understood this and probably never will. I always feel, when listening to this song, that it's exactly what this song is all about. It's good to be king, if just for a while. Cheers, Tom Petty.

This song reminds me about my wife. It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. She’s always in our heart…

I remember 8 years ago when I first was learning to drive and my dad went with me, he played this song for me and I loved the ending and I thought it sounded beautiful. Now here we are in 2017 and Tom Petty is gone ;( Rest In Peace rock legend

It's good to be king, if just for a while To be there in velvet, yeah, to give 'em a smile It's good to get high and never come down It's good to be king of your own little town Yeah, the world would swing if I were king Can I help it if I still dream time to time It's good to be king and have your own way Get a feeling of peace at the end of the day And when your bulldog barks and your canary sings You're out there with winners, it's good to be king Yeah I'll be king when dogs get wings Can I help it if I still dream time to time It's good to be king and have your own world It helps to make friends, it's good to meet girls A sweet little queen who can't run away It's good to be king, whatever it pays Excuse me if I have some place in my mind Where I go time to time

I was at the rock n roll hall of fame last week. They have an awesome Tom Petty display there. He had both sides of a hallway and was one of the larger displays I saw that day. It was moving to see his hand written lyrics to several songs including my favorite, this one! They also had a flannel shirt and pair of jeans that he wore on the cover of the Rolling Stone. Rest In Peace, Tom.
