The last DJ was the best album he ever released. The live show at the Olympic, downtown LA was a masterpiece. Tom Petty at his prime.

I went to a Heartbreakers concert in NC in 1991. No musician except Tom Petty sounds better live!

His music is even better live. That's talent. Very rare talent at that.

Amen brother he died the same day as The Las Vegas Massacre. I was just devastated . Lots of tears I went to bed at 8pm because I felt that heavy weight of depression on me and I just wanted to escape

So Tom Petty was right:Free speaking artists singing soulful love songs disappeared. I remember it well. The US Gov't.changed the rules on telecommunications.

I don't know what I think about this. TP didn't play for free. Or cheap.

No, but he did fight for the fans whenever things got too expensive. He’s particularly well known for this when his record company, MCA, tried to raise the price of his album “Hard Promises” just to capitalize on his success. He went to them and made them change the prices back. He’s also very famous for going to court against record agencies for their greed, and trying to fight for musician rights. Is he perfect? No. But he was definitely a symbol aimed in the right direction for corporate greed in music.

@@aa306911agreed. also adding on, that other comment is irrelevant anyway. this song isn’t about the actual price itself, it’s about the top dogs of the music industry finding ways to cut corners and eliminate artistic and human elements of real music, dulling down music and everything about it just for more money. its a different conversation about charging expenses for actual talent and music that tom poured everything in to. which is all tom played. but it’s changed now. its all fake and it’s completely taken over our world today, the radio only plays “music” completely made by computers. nothing real like this anymore.

So I'm guessing from the song that the cost of the orchestra wasn't passed on to those in attendance.

Not sure what that has to do with anything. The song is about elements of the music industry who clearly don't give a crap about the artistic aspect of it turning everything into an opportunity to make more money for its own sake. Whether or not an artist wants to be compensated for legitimate expenses put into producing their art is a totally different matter.
