How cool, "I don't know who you are but you're in my band forever!". Tears in my eyes. But a big smile on my face.

I had the joy of seeing 2 concerts on this, their final tour - Boston in July and the very last show at the Hollywood Bowl. In each telling of the story, Mike's Japanese guitar kept getting cheaper and cheaper. By the last show, it was down to only costing 25 cents, lol. Mike got a big chuckle at each devaluation of that guitar. Thank you to the best American rock band, with a catalogue of songs so prolific and with such consistent quality. You all have given us 40 years of music magic.

Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are my favorite band of all time. And with Tom’s telling this story just makes it even more special. Mike Campbell is one of the best guitarist in the world. He’s right up there with all the other greats. And Tom always have credit to Mike for everything they did together !!! RIP Tom !!!

Tom Petty has been with me since the 80's and I have adored him ever since. I think everyone was horrified when we heard he had died. I was so depressed for weeks. I think of Tom and hope he knew what a legend he is. Much love Dana. And you were the 💘 love of his life. Bless you and the family

That story of Tom meeting Mike Campbell was very touching, beautiful, and sweet and any other good words you can think to write about it. I,ve heard an only slightly different version of it from the documentary movie,- "Running Down A Dream" This version gives a bit more emotion. Thanks for airing this.Love them both. big fan of both benmont tench Ron and Howie,Stan, and Mr.Feronie

What are the chances of finding virtuoso piano and guitar players, and the voice and talents of Tom Petty in one small town? Simply meant to be folks...

Cray how often local mates developed into amazing musicians & became HUGELY successful. Prob no greater example than Rush' Geddy Lee & Alex Lifeson. Even members of YES in the same area. Similarly you have Lynyrd Skynyrd who formed after a baseball game.Even Def Leppard has a similar origin (Joe Elliot orig wanted to play gtr ). I've had many good bands but never had a diamond in the rough walk in. I did get on an album with a former 80's MTV headliner but he was already established. There is def something palpable in the room when you're around actual star-quality. Hard to explain but you know its there.

If Tom only had one joint music history would not have been the same. Tom and Mike magic, Mike must be a George Harrison type not number of notes but the music is made between the notes.

They did not have much money in the early days. Mike's house was being foreclosed on when he wrote Boys of Simmer with Henley. Those early record deals were bad and a lot of albums had to be recorded before a new contract and real money came in, if you were still relevant by that time.
