This 2nd version of "It's All in the Game" by Tommy Edwards was recorded in July 1958 at MGM Studios, Culver City, CA. It was released on MGM Records as a single in July 1958 on 7” 45 RPM and on the LP: "It's All in the Game” in both Mono & Stereo formats. It rose all the way to the top as a #1 hit, staying at the top beginning September 29, 1958 for 6 weeks. It made Tom Edwards the 1st African-American to chart at #1 on The US Billboard Hot 100. Enjoy my more balanced DES [Digitally Extracted STEREO] remix of this classic song.
"It's All in the Game" is a pop song whose most successful version was recorded by Tommy Edwards in 1958. Carl Sigman composed the lyrics in 1951 to a wordless 1911 composition titled "Melody in A Major", written by Charles G. Dawes, who was later Vice President of the United States under Calvin Coolidge. It is the only #1 single in the US to have been co-written by a Vice President and Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
The song has become a pop standard, with cover versions by dozens of artists, some of which have been minor hit singles. Tommy Edwards' version ranks at #47 on the 2018 list of "The Hot 100's All-Time Top 600 Songs".
I was thrilled to get my hands on a nice digital Mono mix of this 1958 recording rather than its Stereo brethren. Attempting to do a DES from the stereo mix proved futile with Tommy’s vocal having been panned mid-right reverbing obnoxiously into the left. I’ve learned that the only way to do a DES is to go back to the mono version!!
About the MONO mix:
The source MONO track is from a 1994 MCA/RHINO Compilation CD: “Billboard Pop Memories 1955-59”. It was perfectly mixed and EQ-ed. I did not have to make any alterations to make it sound great in Stereo!
About my DES STEREO mix:
For Tommy’s Lead Vocal, I centered him, removed the original overabundant reverb and added a hint of crisp stereo reverb to give continuity to the stereo image. For the Backing Vocals, I panned them Right, reverbing into the Left. For the Strings, I gave them a stereo surround-sound effect. For the Piano & Guitar, I panned them both Left, reverbing into the Right. For the Drums, I panned them Right, reverbing into the Left. For the Bass, I kept it centered without any further adjustments.
Technical Information:
I used DeMIX PRO v4.2 to Isolate Tommy’s Lead Vocal, Backing Vocals, Strings, Piano, Guitar, Remaining Instruments, Drums and Bass into 8 separate tracks. I used SpectraLayers PRO-7 for stem cleanup. Adobe Audition was used for Dynamic Range recovery, EQ, Delay, Reverb and final mixdown. NERO 2019 Platinum used to generate the final video.
