The line about Tommy being underneath the ground and Churchill above, is so poignant. Tommy has worked really hard to get to where he is with men ‘born better’ than him and yet, he’s still regarded as under them because of class distinction. Churchill recognizes this and gives him massive respect because like he said, they are both still working towards the same end/goals in society due to their ambitious nature. Just as they were back when they were soldiers.

That's absolutely not what he is saying... Hes saying he was under the ground before because Tommy was a tunneler in the war, and Churchill was over the ground as a lieutenant colonel, literally on top of the ground, not in the air force or in the navy. He is now saying its the same because Churchill is in the higher ranks of society fighting with the law and country behind him, while Tommy fights, literally... in the underground criminal circles underneath society as a literal gangster, which is why the term 'underground' is used alot on crime. It's nothing to do with Tommy being born poor and him being born rich I'm afraid. This is a really really well written and clever scene, and all you've done is draw the straightest line from A to B and totally missed what they are saying. That narrative would not only be tasteless but also add absolutely nothing to the conversation for either party, there is no class distinction, as Churchill literally regards him as an equal and even pokes fun at the fact that despite Tommy being part of the social elite now, he still likes cigarettes and cheap alcohol.

" Conviction introduces emotion, which is the enemy of oratory. " Oratory is to treat a specific subject with logic and reason distinctively. This goes back to Cicero, logic and reason are constantly threatened by the possible contamination of subjective emotions. The act of convicting someone has such a duality. I feel like that quote sums up the fundamental flaw that humans have when trying to find a solution to any problem.
@ibrahimkhattak8007

Can u explain this in simple terms plz?
@godspoppa33
2 жыл бұрын
@@ibrahimkhattak8007 I don't think I'm smart enough and this might be more confusing but this is how I look at it. Basically, humans are not robots. When a computer or robot has a problem we just enter a line of code and the problem is fixed, no emotions involved at all. But when humans have a problem we use language. Now since every human has emotions, the way we communicate language involves emotion. If I said "I miss you" to someone with zero emotion like a robot, than they won't believe me. But if I said "I miss you" while crying then there is a better chance of them believing me. That's the most simple version I can think of, but it gets way more complicated when your trying to convince a group of people or an entire government of something.

I agree, it's also something to remember that Tommy battles these demons of his pretty much completely alone, and has been this way for many many years at this point. This is the first time he's vocalized it to somebody - Even Grace didn't see him this way she had been gone a long time by here

It is almost as if what Churchill is, is what Tommy aspires to become. Almost a father figure for him.

Crazy to think that this Churchill might in fact be greater than his ancestor, in the defense of Britain. Massive respect for the lineage.

I consider Churchill as the most dangerous, yet respectable man on the show. Working tirelessly in the background to protect the country with all the events happening - and has incredible access to communications, weaponry, and capabilities to ruin any family we have seen on the show. Nobody started shit with him within the country.

When he said underground he's referring to the other side of the law. In any sort of law enforcement position you have to be willing to compromise with your adversary, otherwise they will simply be replaced with someone else you either have to hunt or build a repport with again. Winston is referring to Tommy's ties to the underworld and less likely to his poor roots.

You can really tell that the guy playing Churchill had had tons of prostethics and makeup on his face to look like Churchill. His face just looks so... Stiff.
