I went to a Folk Festival in about 2018/19 and I was part of every sea song, shanty and maritime singaround over the weekend which was a bit strange as I get seasick on the Shields ferry.
I do know songs in "C" but that's as far as it goes.
However I did gain a lot of knowledge about what it was like on board a ship, how the sailors coped, who fought who and what I would need to do on board of a whaler.
It took me a while to try and marshal all of this knowledge into a song and originally it was going to be a list-song with all of the things that whales were used for and then this song came about.
I had done my research, as ever, and I was particularly struck by the fact that watchmakers would use bone and ivory tools in the manufacture of pocket watches and would sometimes lubricate them with whale oil.
In cold weather when the body heat from the heart and blood of the wearer could not keep the oil fluid then the watch would stop I thought that this was a good inroad into this song.
