Good old fashioned restoration my favorite subject I can't believe people balk at restoration ! A toy that's fresh and restored is way more valuable then one that looks like a rusty tin can . Great job for sure, I realize this is my opinion but I just felt like I needed the rant !

Very, very nice job---Bravo-Zulu, amigo, for bringing a "dead toy" back to life! I saw the Windham Maine realty sign in the background....and I believe I detected a New England accent (although I believe you stated you were in Virginia). I applaud your efforts! Equally worth admiration (maybe even more?) I applaud your wife allowing you to use the kitchen sink!!! A very pleasant video!

I am working on a 1/64th collection of the cars my Dad and I have had during our lives. Some are very hard to find. No one makes a 1/64th 1960 Ford Falcon sedan. It was a cheap piece of crap that rusted out in 2 years and the rear springs collapsed. No one has seen fit to memorialize such an underpowered dog of a car. Amazingly, I found a small tootsie toy of this very car. Who would have thought it? I'll be restoring it using this fellows work as a guide.

For me, this was an excellent video of what not to do for the entire first part, on the rare occasions that I do a restoration, I do a complete disassembly including the tires, than use an actual paint stripper in a well ventilated area, using gloves that are designed to use with harsh chemicals. If I have corrosion I use a white vinegar bath, generally do this for from between 4 and 24 hours. if you have pits, filling them with a bit of modeling putty or even some bondo works well before you sand. The reason I would never use oven cleaner is for both health reasons and that it will both pit the metal and accelerate metal fatigue. I applaud you for doing this in a way that you thought was good, but really hope that you do a little more research before your next restoration project.

@dperry428 Yes you did make a troll post Read what I wrote, I went in to some detail as to what I do when I do any sort of restoration after my initial comment. I made suggestions on how they can be more safe and why. I also applauded him and asked that he look a little deeper in to restoration. It's true that I have no video's but that hardly makes me a troll, since what I had to say was constructive. If the person that made the video takes even one of my suggestions to heart than my post was totally justified and did something good. Not everyone on you tube needs to make video's to have knowledge on a subject. Your comment on the other hand added nothing to the conversation and was designed to get a reaction, congratulations you made a successful troll post. I will also be sure to avoid your channel so as not to make a comment on it that could possibly upset you! So your post also did some good as it made me aware that their are people's channels I should avoid watching.

Don't mean to be stepping on your toes but oven stripper is the worst thing that you can use. It eats up certain alloys, lead, pewter and other bases. Pitting is a common thing not to mention a health hazard to breath. Later the paint will start to degradate over time from minuscule elements of the cleaner. I'm sorry but I disagree with the method. I'm not a hater. I've just seen the effects before.

Thanks for posting this video. I have recently gotten into restoring old toy trucks and enjoy it very much. I have a question... would you ever prime one of these toys before painting? Or is paint put directly onto the bare metal just as good?
@TheFunOfTheHunt
8 жыл бұрын
Hi, and thanks for the kind comments! We have done it both ways, but when possible we try and match what was done by the manufacturer originally. Most smaller Tootsietoys were not primed before being painted. If you run into a metal surface that is badly pitted, using a primer-surface and then sanding before applying the color will help the overall finish. We definitely do use primer on larger vehicles such as Buddy L, Tonka, Structo and similar toys.

It's so much better to use a Paint stripper.. I use the orange paint stripper "CitriStrip" it's inexpensive, and it's safe on the lungs, and if you get it on your skin it doesn't burn your skin off.. I recommend Waring eye protection, gloves, and a face mask anyway.. Another thing that I like to do is remove all the tires, and get the underside as nice as the body.. And after all the old paint has been removed I use a brass wire wheel on my Dremel, and finish it up with triple odd steel whool.. Keep in mind that the prep is just as if not more important as the paint.. When all looks good I replace any bad tires with vintage tires in good condition.. You can go on Ebay and get new tires and stain them to look old but I don't as I like to keep everything as original as possible.. I think we all share an interest in passion for these old toys, and we have our own way of restoring old them.. All I say is try to keep it safe and have fun because that's what this hobby is all about.. And I like to hear from other guys, and gals who do this.. I think you did an awesome job.. They look really nice.. Thank you for sharing with us .. Benny..

Oven cleaner has lye or caustic soda in it which attacks aluminum and zinc. That is the absolute worst thing to use on these cars. Try commercial floor stripper. It will remove paint and won't eat plastic. You can toss the whole car in with the tires. Since these cars were usually only painted on the outside so you could leave the tires on and mask them and the axle if they're good.

use the dremell and put a drill bit with a split in it and put and roll the emery paper around the split and make a roll, you can then use different grades on different bits, and it makes a better job, also you broke the piece off ON CAMERA and said it corroded off!!!, still you tried your best

Interesting to get to know the brand. It must have been one of the examples for Dinky Toys. One remark though: I always do pretty much everything by hand. Talking about nasty stuff and then about just using it outside and / or slush the residue down the sink is too "darn U.S." for me. I even sand by hand and paint by brush. I know that all sounds like a nuisance but in the end one can be extra proud about the results and hasn't turned a bit of recycling into yet another environmental disaster. Well done in every other respect though. :-)

I liked the concept so I gave this a watch. The coughing and gagging you are doing is a terrible thing to advocate to people. Then all the metal from the sanding & grinding. You are creating particles that hang in the air like rice in jello. These spread throughout your home to keep breathing-in long after you "think" they are gone. You should really take better care of your health.
