I noticed two things (there are likely more): 1. It just wasn't as well structured or cohesive. There were a couple of times where I wasn't sure if they were introducing the next item or elaborating on the last one. Part of that I think is that the other lists had a better (and concise) explanation of the criteria of the next item (e.g., "For number 10, were looking at an animated action film with good, well, animation."; "For number 6 we want to focus on movies that show character development through the action. Think _Crouching Tiger_ or ..."). I got the feeling they tried to do that here, but I couldn't tell you what any of the categories actually were. 2. What set CineFix apart others was they could explain _why_ something was good. Others will happily give you a top 10 and tell you "we like X because it has good Y". Ok, that's nice but _why_ is Y good? Watch Mojo will say, "We like the battle of Helm's Deep because it is epic in scale, but still easy to follow." CineFix will tell you "The Battle of Helm's Deep is easy to follow because of this here action pyramid. [Insert crystal clear explanation of what that is and why it works here]"

Seriously... what is this low quality WhatchMojo AI generated mockup? I just watched the first entry (#10) and paused to comment because... seriously, what the fuck? First, Clint isn't narrating here, and it feels super weird as his remplacement really got the 'up and down' cheerful tone of Watchmojo narrators. It really isn't the same style as the well paced and natural tone of Clint narration. But that's not even the main problem. What's with the writing? The disclaimer flat out spoils three entries right out of the gate (and it easily could have been integrated organically in an entry with a single sentence, that was so clunky to start the video with it). And then, the intro of the entry is less than a minute, cite three movies that are not even eligible for the choice at hands (cause not animated), and boom we got the #10 right away. And just then we're served a mess of name droppings and dumping random infos without much of coeherence, and not even managing to focus more than 2 seconds on what the movie does differently that owes it the place in the top (what the fuck happened when we jumped from Batman animated series to, Lego Batman to Teen Titan Go! to the movies ?!?!?). I'm not even sure I want to watch it further. I'm not against trying new things, but here the great Cinefix top 10 formula seems just hastily scrambled with no rhyme or reason. Tell me it has been written by Chat GPT, because else, it's really sad for the writers. I might come as harsh, but man am I disapointed. I'll push further and give my final thought when the video fully watched.
@Guile21

It's even worse the more it goes on. What the actual fuck??? Not even citations or honorable mentions just before anouncing the laureate of each section! It feels so shallow and hard to digest. And what was that about tainting Princess Mononoke, of all movies, with its influence on Zelda and Elden Ring? Not that it's not the case, but how is that even relevant?!? And, no, I won't accept the niche genre here to hold on the citations. There's a LOT of action focused animated movies that were worth mentioning. Even the #10 and #1 are overlaping as fuck, another category might have been used (cause come on... The Incredibles... very good movie, but there's a shitload even better than this one). Why not a "comedy action" category? Or Parody category? No mention of Wallace and Gromit the wrong trousers with its epic train scene, movie that was feature in the top 10 best animated movies of all time. No mention of Cowboy Bebop The Movie which is an amazing action blockbuster in itself. No mention of Mutafuckas, Animatrix, Primal, Kung Fu Panda, Afro Samurai, The Lego Movie, Mulan, The Legend of Hei, Team America World Police, Chicken Run, Epic, 9, Bolt, Paw Patrol the movie (I'm serious, it's more action packed than a Michael Bay movie, and the action slaps!), The Rescuers Down Under, Beowulf, Appleseed (two movies adaptations at least, which could have been mentionned when you focused on Ghost in the shell from the same author), Gantz Zero, The owls of Ga'Hoole, Final Fantasy the spirit within, Roujin Z, Steamboy (again, a full feature from Akira's author), Titan AE, Street fighter the animated movie, Tekkonkinkreet (Amer Beton), Toy Story 2, How to train your dragon 2, and countless japanese movies adapted from anime series or some amazing direct to video DC animated movies... I mean, there's sometimes a choice I don't fully agree with, and always a few 2 or 3 movies that has been forgotten on the short list... but this an all time low. There's a great chunk of movies straight up ignored here. And not much I really hope it's just a bump in the road an not the new direction the channel takes. Because that's borderline sabotage...
@Guile21

And I read other comments. There's more movies I haven't seen that are being mentioned. It's a a shame. The list doesn't talk one bit about cinema. It talks about movies, but not much about cinematography in a professionnal and in depth way we're used to. I double down here : that's not even good for WatchMojo standards. I feel like it needs to be stated how integral Brad Bird was in solving the uncanny valley dilemma of computer animated film. If you look at the humans of any Pixar movie predating Incredibles there is a huge difference in how they approached the character designs. Even Andy in Toy Story is pretty creepy. Bird was the one who argued to Pixar how animated art isn’t about making it as close to realistic as possible but it’s literally the opposite. Proportions should be exaggerated and unnatural physics are usually excused by the audience. Western animation owes so much of its recent success and culture to that man
@dumbsocrates

I agree that the video felt different, but I gotta say Max definitely has the animation nerd bona fides. Shout outs to Fire and Ice, Heavy Metal, and Ninja Scroll were great. Hell, the middle of this video is basically a short (albeit not in depth) lesson in the history of adult animation’s rise in popularity in the west, beat for beat. From Bakshi to Miyazaki. From dirty NYC theaters to HBO. For sure, you could feel the difference from one of Billy’s scripts, but it’s pretty clear to me that Max has a deeper history with and passion for this specific topic. Take or leave constructive criticism: stronger statements on why each film was chosen would be a good idea, and a wider array of other movies in order for us to compare and contrast would also help strengthen the video. But idk, I don’t get paid to make KZitem videos. Lol. Either way, I really enjoyed the video.

Nice list, I agree with many of the choices. But I do miss the old CineFix depth: comparing other movies and why the ones selected are better than runner-ups, having some thought behind the ranking (either sheer quality, or covering different aspects of what makes a good action movie or what makes a good animated movie, for instance). Nice notes about a couple of the artists behind the movies, though; I had no idea Miyazaki & Moebius knew each other.

I’ve had a bad feeling about the quality of these movie lists since the previous list, and it hasn’t gotten any better. The movie lists used to really delve into the meat of what made each topic so significant in film and how each choice truly captured the theme of the video. Now, it just feels like a generic top 10 go-check-this-out list. The Number 10 slot alone spends 75% off its time talking about things completely unrelated to the topic of the video and another 20% talking about how great the movie is without discussing WHY it’s a great action film, even if it’s unanimously regarded as one, the video doesn’t seem interested in exploring anything much further with that. I don’t think I’m going to be watching the garbage this channel has become anymore. Sorry Cinefix, RIP

the villains list they put out before this one was handled pretty well, large range of movies, concise themes for each pick, spots taken by movies I'd never heard of before but does a very good job convincing me they deserve that spot over everything else they'd talked about. good video, would recommend. this video... doesn't do that. obviously a different writer, covering a topic they've only researched and not watched hundreds of movies in, talking about the movies they liked rather than talk through everything else they liked but couldn't justify giving a spot to. nothing wrong with that, just shows there's a very delicate art to discussing movies in interesting ways, particularly lists

LOL is Cinefix affected by the movie strike too? This feels significantly more bloated and less substantial than other lists. I mean when the first category on an ANIMATION list starts by highlighting live action movies and also with the narrator saying “yeah this isn’t actually the a top 10 list just a list to get exposure to movies” and it’s some of the most iconic animated movies of all time? and the lack of other mentions for several categories feels extremes counter intuitive to that message. I get doing something different but to change what several held as the gold standard for lists to go back to the more conventional and overplayed format.

One of my favorite behind the scenes facts from that movie is a scene where Roger and Eddie are sneaking into a building. Eddie tells Roger to hide against the wall. However, Bob Hoskins forgot his eye line and was looking too high when he was talking to Roger. Nobody noticed this until post-production, but then they remembered there are no rules to cartoon characters, so when Roger backed himself against the wall, his body was flattened and made taller so he could maintain eye contact with Eddie. It’s so well done you would think it was storyboarded beforehand.

Including Waltz with Bashir would really stretch the definition of action movie. It's fantastic, but neither the film's tension nor main conflict is based around overcoming an enemy or surviving, and there isn't much of what could be called action. This isn't a "Top 10" like the others on the channel. It's more of a history of animation lesson as detailed through 10 interesting examples. I like most of these movies, but it felt waaaay too long to me.

I've probably seen Princess Mononoke in theaters at least 4 times over the years, one of my favorite Ghibli productions second only to The Wind Rises. That said, the best anime movies are End of Eva and Macross DYRL although I guess they aren't really action films despite alien mech fights

The writing for this video is definitely different from usual cineflix lists but it was very good nonetheless. The bit about heavy metal is specially good, making many comparisons and showing the relationships between a bunch of different and influential works.

influential, yes. One of the top 10 of all time? Probably not. I'm a fan of the film Heavy Metal, but even I can recognize the shortcomings it has as an actual film trying to tell a narrative.

If they're going to choose to represent both Western animation, Japanese animation, and other countries animation in the same list, then Vampire Hunter D. (Both the OVA and Bloodlust) Definitely deserve at least a mention as one of the top action animated movies of all time. The writing of this script felt very surface level with one "Out there" pick just to make it seem like they did their homework. I hate knocking peoples work because I know the time and effort it takes to create, but this felt like a very lazy script and reasoning of their choices to me,

I believe that the dirigible rescue at the end of "Kiki's Delivery Service" is one of the most thrilling action sequences I've seen in ANY film. The use of sound (and the lack of music), the suspense, the recklessness of some of Kiki's flight, the extraordinary timed-to-the-frame pause (picture and sound) at the climax - it's all great. But what really makes it work is the power of emotion, which is really rare for an "action sequence." I never get tired of watching this (and it's still my favorite Miyazaki film).

The first breakdown (10) started out okay, but I couldn’t follow the thread-of-thought. This video would have been better told in an essay format, rather than a “top ten l list”, when the list format is not used. As any comfort-seeking-KZitem-watching-person, I like a familiar voice, but it should be okay for new speakers to make videos. I like the like the “in no order in particular”, but I prefer when you guys use “we” rather than “I”, since this is must be a collaboration and discussion of which movies should be included.
