Nick Watson America didn't do fuck all, you blew civilians to pieces with nuclear weapons that's very brave. I agree with the Russia statement though, without Russia who knows what would have happened. Plenty of countries win wars on their own and Britain did it only the last few decades in the Falklands. Britain stood alone for a long time against the Nazis an defeated them in the battle of Britain, pick up a history book.
@jamesyorkshire6106

Nick Watson America didn't support Britain in the Falklands in fact a handful of American mercenaries were killed in the Falklands fighting for the Argies. The US didn't want to know about that war. You supplied some stuff for the battle of Britain and we built all the planes etc. Wow must have been difficult for you yanks to sit outside the theatre of conflict and send supplies that were guarded across the ocean by British ships while under fire from German U boats and while we did all the fighting. Don't try and justify the nuclear bombing of civilians mate, what are you a psychopath? Seems like the yanks like to kill innocent people just like they do in Vietnam, Syria, Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen and Pakistan. At least the British didn't drop a nuclear bomb over an entire city or spread agent orange over Vietnam causing millions of them to be born with three legs and other deformaties to this day.

+ARandomGuy and the saddest thing here is, more than half the forces involved in D-Day in all military branches, were not American. The role of the British and Canadian + other nationalities at D-Day is disgustingly overlooked. Vast concentrations of British soldiers and naval power, airpower and intelligence operations were dedicated to the D-Day operations. Yes, the Americans got basically the worst of it, at Omaha, though this same kind of violence unfolded elsewhere, just on a smaller scale. The Sherman amphibious tanks sunk before getting to Omaha, whereas they got to the British beaches with British tanks too. The infantry at Omaha had no tank cover and fire support, and it was the toughest defended of the beachheads. Regardless of this, the British and Empire forces made about half the manpower of D-Day's initial landings. Sure, the USA later sent enough soldiers to outnumber the British soldiers in some areas, though the British had large forces elsewhere in the world.

Good list. I might rate the Battle of Leipzig (1813) as a more significant battle than Waterloo. Waterloo was the last gasp of Napoleon's second go around. Leipzig, fought right after Napoleon's disastrous foray into Russia in 1812, represented Napoleon pretty much at the peak of his powers. Leipzig was an even more significant defeat for France, as it was in a set piece battle, ending the aura of invincibility that allowed Napoleon to conquer most of Europe. Napoleon retreated back to France, the Allies followed, and there they put an end to his Empire. ...and yes, Stalingrad should have been #1. Taking nothing away from the brave and skilled troops that stormed the beaches in Normandy, their operation was a mere pinprick compared to the scope of the absolute hell that was Stalingrad.

the fall of constantinople is more symbolic more so than anything else Whether or not it fell in 1453 would realistically have little significance in the grand scope of history. The ottomans would only get stronger and more influential in Europe, while Byzantium only would get weaker. If the byzantine empire persisted past 1453, to say it would be a shell of its former self would be a massive understatement, it would be an irrelevant and forgotten city state, that would have no power over its surroundings, and next to no hope in reconquering it's once lost territories, as well as little influence in the future of Europe, the only significance would be the continuation of the roman royal family, which again would have no sphere of influence, and little power in the region that surrounds them also you said it yourself, the crusade was a war, not a battle, therefore does not qualify for this list the Stalingrad take is something I can agree with tho, definitely some hollywood bias there when deciding to place the battle of normandy at the top spot

correct, before and after the gemanic tribes and the romans traded, influenced each other and the romans even built most of the popular southwest german cities. The battle was not the reason for the invasion comming to halt, but the reasons behind the loss of the battle (terrain etc.), where main factors for the romans not to push any further. Maybe the romans would have been able to come up with a new strategy to conquer the deep forests but, thats pure speculation.

Many historians state that there is no turning point in WW2. Stalingrad was a large setback for Nazi Germany but it was not decisive. One could argue that Kursk or the failed capture of Moscow were as important losses. The improved Red Army as the war production of the Soviet Union would make any German victory on the eastern front difficult.

only in the Napoleonic wars i would put in number 1 the battle of Leipzig. Austerlitz, Jena-Auerstadt and Friedland were very important, but Leipzig was tye turning point of the war independent on wich side won. If Napoleon had been Victorious the allies would have suffered a heavier blow than any before, Wellington would have retreated to Spain without the opportunity to exploit his brilliant Vitoria campaign and Napoleon could have rescued his isolated garrissons in Poland and east Prussia. In the other hand (what actually happened) as the allies won Napoleon lost 60.000 men that he didn’t have, severely sealing the fate of his 1814 campaign into a defeat

Because Stalingrad was a prolonged campaign (late August 42 to February 1, 1943) whereas Normandy lasted for one month. Any battle would be bloodier if it lasted longer and there's also the strategic significance. Stalingrad was a crushing defeat for the Germans, yes but they still had a decent chance to overcome and win the war. After the landings in Normandy, there was no doubt about who was going to win the war in Europe.

I never understood the American mentality that almost every battle or war was somehow a victory. If you ask me, just look at the mission or goals of the war; were the goals accomplished? If yes, then victory, if no then defeat. The USA invaded Vietnam with the goal of stopping Communism from spreading throughout Vietnam. The USA withdrew and Communism spread from north to south. Defeat. The War of 1812 is another example. The goal of the USA was to conquer all of Canada. The goal of the British and Canadians were to defend and maintain the border. At the war's end, the border remained the same. The goals of the USA were by far not achieved, so it was a loss. It's okay to admit defeat Americans. It's okay.
@Stardweller1
9 жыл бұрын

@ChaoticHeretic
9 жыл бұрын
1) They defended their ally a little bit more than what is expected of an ally. 2) They achieved all Military goals and by that they defeated their enemies on all front. Set up and defended bases meant to defend southern Vietnam. Again, it would have been a complete victory for the USA but the people didn't want to continue. Look at it this way. When you get into a fight with someone you want to knock them out and or maybe permanently injure them, but if you just beat them up and your friends pull you away before you can do any serious harm then you still won the fight..
@TheYoungWolfI

Then Russia charged the horse severly injuring it (Stalingrad) and then Russia stabbed the horse as an act of self defence and the horse fell into a coma and had no chance of surviving (Kurks) then the horse got shot (D-day) wich would't really matterd cauze it's fait was already sealed.

Stalingrad wasn't as significant as the Ostheer's defeat before Moscow in December 1941. The Stalingrad offensive was on a single front (due to the weakened state of the Ostheer after Barbarossa's failure the previous year) and though an entire German Army was erased from the order of battle, the tide had already turned against Germany in the East. It is the symbolic farthest east penetration so carries special meaning. But militarily Barbarossa was the true disaster for Hitler. IMHO.

@@user-bj5ki6sr6c Allied victory was already certain without the invasion of Normandy. By 1944, the Red Army was in Poland and the war was decisively in their favor. D-Day seemed more like posturing and an opportunity for the Western allies to sweep up German positions in France while most of the German army was fighting in the Eastern Front. With or without Normandy, Germany would have capitulated to the Soviets, especially by 1944.

The Battles of Kursk, Berlin, and Midway are as important in WWII as Stalingrad and Normady since they were the major turning points. Kursk is basically the last gasp of any offensive by the Germans on the eastern front, and the Japanese basically lost all offensive capability in the Pacific. And the Battle of Berlin... probably the largest army the world will ever see assembled to attack their foe's capital. Also WWI was woefully underrepresented... Tannenberg and Ypres (Paschendale) should at least get honorable mentions.
@MilsurpMikeChannel
9 жыл бұрын
Kursk was the last Nazi attempt at an offensive in the East and the Russians ultimately winning this battle meant the initiative was on their side for the rest of the war. Berlin was unwinnable for the Germans, but you have other stories like the 12th Army getting civilians to the west so to not get raped and pillaged by the Soviets. The 12th Army and the Kriegsmarine basically saved a quarter million people from having to live under East German rule which in a way, made them successful as that was their main goal.
@fatdog1763

+Milsurp Mike If they talked about Berlin, they'd have to explain why Allied forces waited three days to attack after Russia had already got there, and we can't have people realizing that the allies gave the go ahead to a mass rape of German innocents at the hands of the Russians. If you do that, they might start looking into the Hollywood narrative a little more and stop paying to see the annual oscar winning "Allied Heroes" movie.

+SuperGamerHalo Kursk has value simply because it made sure that the Germans lost almost 3 armies worth of men in the invasion of the Caucasus. I don't think its top ten but if the Germans get their armies out of Kursk with minimal losses they would've had enough men and armor to hold at the polish border and wouldn't of had to move as many men from the west to the east and opening up for D-Day. Honestly though D-Day and Stalingrad probably should be swapped and Midway at least deserved a honorable mention as both Stalingrad and Midway were the turning points in their respective theaters.

As a proud American, you guys should be ashamed of yourselves for your abysmal understanding of the war and ranking the invasion of Normandy above the Battle of Stalingrad. "Thus began the crushing defeat of Germany." The Russians were 1000 KM away from Berlin when we landed on June 6th, 1944. Germany's destruction started when the 6th army was completely destroyed at Stalingrad. Both sides suffered starvation and harsh winter. The Russians ultimately outmaneuvered and outplanned the Germans by destroying the Romanian, Italian, Hungarian forces around Stalingrad which led to the 6th Army's encirclement and death. Nazi Germany was destroyed thanks, primarily, to the blood spilled by Russians, not by an 11 month offensive against a destroyed German military that lost almost everything on the Eastern Front.

8 жыл бұрын
+Arawn Aun During WW2 the east front was much, much bigger and more important than the west front. You could definitely make a case that calling Normandy the "Top Battle in History" is biased, maybe even propaganda. I would say the Battle of Kursk, Stalingrad and Berlin are all more important than Normandy only in Europe during WW2. As for Gettysburg and Tet? Maybe they belong on the list, maybe not... I also think they should have mentioned the Battle of Lake Poyang, largest naval battle in terms of personnel of all time and maybe the Battle of Midway.
@arawnaun4851
8 жыл бұрын
+MrVannspreder At no point did i say it was the "Top Battle in History", the criteria for such a list is extremely ambiguous. The largest amphibious landing in history being included is not propaganda, however. The sheer scale of the invasion, the coordination between nations and resistance groups, the efforts to keep the location secret. Its extremely ignorant to suggest its inclusion (even on a list this ambiguous) is "US" propaganda if for no other reason than it was not a US battle. Where its placed on a 'Top 10' is entirely subjective, but its ludicrous that it would not be included. There are most certainly battles that should have been on this list, Midway is the first one that jumped out at me, but my point is that there were only two battles on this list that were entirely 'American'. One was a civil conflict and the other was in some respects a defeat. Your getting pretty desperate and reaching pretty far if you think thats US "propaganda".
@MrVannspreder
8 жыл бұрын
I never said that including Normandy on the list was US propaganda. What I wrote was "You could definitely make a case that calling Normandy the "Top Battle in History" is biased, maybe even propaganda." My point is that the west front and also Normandy tends to be overrated in terms of importance by western historians and media. The west front was a sideshow compared to the east front. BTW I visited Normandy last year. It was very interesting to visit some of the museums and actually walk on the beaches I had only seen pictures of. I also visited the cemeteries.

The battle of Stalingrad was the biggest battle in history and the Soviet Union was already strong enough to hold off anymore invasions, because of how great the battle was, it's managed to put down the German army alot, including more deaths, more risks and more blood. The reason d day was number 1, was because it involved the United States or that they (watchmojo) couldn't decide which was actually greater.
@auckk
6 жыл бұрын
Well, The Soviet Union could of beaten the 3rd Reich in operation Barbarossa because of how the battle of Stalingrad weakened the German army, and was also one of the biggest turning points of WWII, D Day was just an add on to the German defeat, but Noone knows if Germany could've beaten back the Red army after Stalingrad. Also, if the Germans won the battle of Stalingrad, Stalin would want the city back, which would be a fateful decision for the Red army, AND if the Germans did win over the Soviet Union, they could focus their attack on the Allies in Africa or even Britain for a second time. If I am wrong then D Day should be number 1.

My Choices for the Most Influential Battles in World History by Rank: 1. Battle of Djahy 2. Battle of Gibeon 3. Battle of Edington 4. Battle of Badr 5. Battle of Marathon 6. Battle of Silva Arsia 7. Battle of Cannae 8. Battle of Tours 9. The Siege of Toulon 10. Battle of Trafalgar 11. The Battles of Saratoga 12. Battle of Antietam 13. The First Battle of the Marne 14. The Siege of Stalingrad 15. Battle of Hastings 16. Battle of Gaugamela 17. Battle of Cajamarca 18. Battle of Myeongnyang 19. Battle of Muye 20. Battle of Boyaca My Top 20 Most Influential Battles in World History in Chronological Order: 1 - Battle of Gibeon [around 1400 B.C.](assuming the account is accurate): Secured the Israelites' hold in the land of Canaan to begin establishing the Kingdom of Israel, laying the seed for the advent of Christianity and their conflict with the Muslims for the past 1,400 years. 2 - Battle of Djahy [1178 B.C. or 1175 B.C.]: The most important land battle during the Late Bronze Age collapse, and was most pivotal in defeating the Sea Peoples who had destroyed the Mycenaeans, the Island of Cyprus, the Hittites, and greatly diminished Assyria causing virtually every city from modern day Italy to the Suez Canal to be abandoned or destroyed. If Egypt had fallen to the Sea Peoples, it's possible a greater power could have been established. The Sea Peoples were most dominant at sea, and so would have dominated the Mediterranean coastline because every major power was destroyed, and they would have as much as a few hundred years to establish themselves before Assyria could become a significant foe. The Sahara desert would also make it difficult to defeat them on land. Possible effects of this would be the prevention of the rise of the powers of the Romans, Carthaginians, and Greece. So no Punic Wars, Roman Empire, or Greek philosophy or Democracy. 3 - Battle of Muye [1046 B.C.]: The decisive defeat of the Shang Dynasty by the Zhou Dynasty. The Zhou Dynasty was the longest lasting Dynasty in Chinese history at 789 years. They established the concept of the "Mandate of Heaven" and justification for power. Developed Chinese writing almost into its modern form. Established feudalism in China to rule a large area more efficiently, enabling a unified Chinese culture to spread across all of modern day China and other parts of Asia. A more Balkanized China could have been totally dominated by Western Colonial powers similar to how the British Empire ruled India, and China wouldn't be the great regional power it us today. 4 - Battle of Silva Arsia [509 B.C.]: Established the Roman Republic, and the form in which they would conquer others and turn them into allies by treaty. These alliances were made so strong that it provided Rome with a near inexhaustible supply of reserves for their army which enabled them to survive several times the loss of their entire army against Hannibal during the Second Punic War. 5 - Battle of Marathon [10 September 490 B.C.]: The first time the Greeks had beaten Persia. Marks the beginning of the Golden Age of Greece and the foundation of the culture of the modern Western world. 6 - Battle of Gaugamela [1 October 331 B.C]: It secured Alexander the Great's victory over the Persians and spread the influence of Greek culture all the way into parts of India. 7 - Battle of Cannae [2 August 216 B.C.]: Caused the Romans to change the way they fought entirely, enabling them to dominate the Mediterranean coastline and most of Europe. 8 - Battle of Badr [13 March 624 A.D.]: Established the Muslims as a rising power, and was the first offensive action to form what would become the Caliphate. Brought the world algebra, increased understanding of the eye and contributed largely to the discovery of cancer to name a few. 9 - Battle of Tours [10 October 732 A.D.]: Denied expansion of the Umayyad Caliphate into the Kingdom of the Franks, largely being credited with saving the Christian world. 10 - Battle of Edington [May 878 A.D.]: Secured the foundation for the rise of England and eventually the British Empire, which has invaded around 90% of the countries of the world in its history. Also, it is responsible for ending slavery throughout most of the world, a concerted effort lasting centuries. 11 - Battle of Hastings [14 October 1066 A.D.]: Ended Anglo-Saxon rule of England, helped create the modern English language, and established the conditions that caused the Hundred Years War 271 years later. 12 - Battle of Cajamarca [16 November 1532 A.D.]: Started the end of the Inca Empire. It was the only place in history to practice a Communist style economy that actually succeeded, and wasn't the cause of millions of innocent lives being slaughtered or starved. They had accomplished which was attempted numerous times in the 20th century that all failed miserably. If the Inca model still existed and was largely copied, then it could have prevented the deaths of tens of millions of innocent people all over the world. It was indeed a great loss to humanity. 13 - The Battle of Myeongnyang [26 October 1597 A.D.]: Stopped the land army of Japan from taking over the whole of Korea by stopping them from receiving reinforcements and supplies. Convinced the Chinese to send their navy, and ultimately forcing the withdrawal of Japan's army from Korea. Basically it prevented the Japanese Empire from being able to expand centuries before WW2. The defeat of Korea would also have allowed the Japanese Empire to greatly increase their naval power using Korean technology, with which they could have dominated the whole of the coastline of China. 14 - The Battles of Saratoga [19 September and 7 October 1777 A.D.]: Convinced the French to join the fight of the American Revolution against the British making the victory at Yorktown possible and ultimately leading to the establishment of the world's first superpower, the United States of America. 15 - The Siege of Toulon [29 August to 19 December 1793 A.D.]: It was the first real opportunity for Napoleon's strategic prowess to start being recognized. A defeat would have hurt his chances to move up the ranks. Also, Toulon was important enough for France that losing it could have lead to a failed French Revolution that wouldn't provide enough time or opportunities for Napoleon to prove himself and make any significant difference. 16 - Battle of Trafalgar [21 October 1805 A.D.]: Prevented from being able to invade the Island of Great Britain. The invasion of Russia nor the campaign in Spain would have occurred. The French Empire would have been solidified as the master of all of Europe. 17 - Battle of Boyaca [7 August 1819 A.D.]: Battle that paved the way for all of the Northern part of South America to gain independence from Spain. That area includes the countries today of Columbia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia. 18 - The Battle of Antietam [17 September 1862 A.D ]: Prevents the Confederacy from attacking Washington DC in the American Civil War, and gave President Lincoln the confidence to issue the Emancipation Proclamation, changing the ultimate goal of the war from preserving the Union to freeing the slaves, renewing Union morale. Any foriegn power thinking of intervention on behalf of the Confederacy would be unable to do so any longer due to the political ramifications that would happen because of the Emancipation Proclamation. 19 - The First Battle of the Marne [5 to 12 September 1914 A.D.]: Disrupted the Schlieffen Plan of the Germans in WW1 and forced Germany intoa two-front war. If it succeeded WW2, at least, wouldn't happen the same if it did at all. Hitler wouldn't rise to power because there's no Treaty of Versailles to cause absolutely crushing economic problems as happened to the Weimar Republic after the abdication of the Kaiser. 20 - Battle of Stalingrad [17 July 1942 to 2 February 1943 A.D.]: Had the Germans won, then the most important supply line to the Soviets through the Volga would be cut off, the Soviet Union would collapse, and Germany would capture control of the oil in the Caucasus. The Allies possibly could have been facing a million more soldiers on D-Day because of the soldiers that would be freed from the Eastern front. D-Day would have been a massacre on the beaches, as the whole European coastline would have been able to be much more heavily fortified and manned.

Also, The battle of Endor. Many ewoks perished in order to destroy the 2nd DeathStar. If the shield generator had not been destroyed then the battle would have been won by the Empire.

Stalingrad, D-day and Midway were all important turning point battles, that changed the world, during the 2nd World War. I am so grateful for sacrifices made in each because it took all three to defeat the axis powers and turn the tide of war.
