Incidentally, your reaction to Mad Max: Fury Road was my reaction to It Follows. Everyone told me what an amazing film it was, and when I finally sat down to watch it, I was very underwhelmed. I thought it was well made, I liked the soundtrack, and the premise was clever. But I was kind of bored during most of it. Meh, oh well. Lol

"Ex Machina" was one of the best films of the year. "It Follows" was very good, although I didn't put it on the same level as similarly abstract "Under the skin" from 2014. Loved "Fury Road" on the big screen but at the same time found it empty. My favorite film of the year was "Queen of Earth" by Alex Ross Perry, a brilliant, subtle and creepy movie about young woman's psychotic breakdown.

'It Follows' was incredibly overrated. Basically your reaction to 'Fury Road' was how I felt about that movie. Only more so because I sincerely hated it. It had the usual ensemble of cookie cutter teenagers giving mediocre performances, the same old tired suspense tropes, and a concept, though original, that was far too obvious in it's metaphor for STD's and sexual promiscuity. It came off less as allegorical and more shoving the audience's face in it's message. Frankly the whole thing came off as an abstinence propaganda film, but one produced by an actual studio and not cinematically incompetent religious leaders. I get that a lot of people like it, and at first I couldn't understand why given the absurdity of it's premise and lack of anything scary happening, but after some thought I think I understand why this movie was successful. Look, it's not the worst movie I've ever seen. There are hundreds if not thousands of horror movies out there that are worse than this one. What sets this movie apart, or rather tricks the audience into thinking they're seeing something good, is the fact that it doesn't seem like a typical hollywood outing at face value. The cinematography is beautiful. I'll give it that. It looks like an art house film, and makes it seem more intelligent than it actually is. And like I said before, there's the concept. Very original, and perhaps if executed with a little more ambiguity and fewer expository characters spoon-feeding the movie's pitch, it might've worked. But it just can't help repeatedly telling the audience why they should be scared instead of just actually scaring them. Also it had a good title. I just didn't think it was scary. At no point did I feel a sense of dread or care about any of the characters. They didn't seem like real people or sound like they were actually talking instead of reciting dialogue. You mentioned 2012's 'Resolution'. Now THAT was a brilliant horror film in all the ways that 'It Follows' wasn't. But was that movie successful with the teenagers of America? Of course not. Because it was vague, thought-provoking, and wasn't about teenagers having sex. I was very surprised to hear you'd seen that movie and still consider 'It Follows' to be as good as you say. How can you dislike 'Fury Road' purely due to the hype surrounding it, and yet love 'It Follows' despite all it's undeserved hype from hack film critics and after school special "sex is bad" advocates?

I can't tell you enough how refreshing it is to find someone else who isn't on the Mad Max: Fury Road gravy train. It's a beautifully shot film but lacks any and all substance. I guess it's just a personal thing but I'd rather watch an action film with okay visuals and a great story than a film with magnificent visuals and barely any story. my biggest problem with Jurassic world is this. When the big supersoaurs is going around and the line comes "oh god, it is part.............RAPTOR" that was so freaking dumb, if they had said "part human" there could have been all kinds of cool parallels that could have been drawn even without changing anything else. Oh it killed it sibling, people kill other people a lot. Oh it's hunting for sport and leaving trails of dead, well people do that too. AND with that concept they could have done some more neat things with the dinosaur, then in the end make them say, it's part human and it would have been a better movie

The way you felt about Fury Road is exactly how I feel about It Follows, and the way you feel about It Follows is exactly how I feel about Fury Road. And the Mad Max video game is great too! We completely agree on Poltergeist though. And of course I loved Bone Tomahawk.

the best thing about your top 10 lists is that you tend to choose some obscure foreign titles rather than some of the well advertised hollywood movies

Good list. Mine: 1. Inside Out 2. Mad Max: Fury Road 3. Ex Machina 4. Sicario 5. The Martian 6. Bride of Spies 7. Creed 8. What We Do in the Shadows (you should watch this one if you haven't. It's a vampire comedy mockumentary. It's seriously brilliant.) 9. Carol 10. The Hateful Eight Bottom 5: 1. Jupiter Ascending 2. Fantastic Four 3. Chappie 4. Terminator Genysis 5. Entourage

Appreciate and enjoy your takes. It goes beyond just good or bad. Specifically in the details. I dont think I fully understood what a movie could be. mainly due to seeing so many bad films, that I now appreciate and understand the beauty in decay and the details.

I'm always amazed and confused by the movies you like and the ones you don't. there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to your taste. you like tons of shit movies, hate some great movies, but always find the good in the bad and the bad in the good. All in all, it makes your channel that much better. Even though I disagree with alot of your opinions, I respect the hell out of them because you always provide solid reasons why you feel how you feel. Keep up the great work man. You are far and away my favorite online movie critic

"You know right away this movie is going to be awesome, because they open with Thunder In Your Heart from Rad." Lol I had the literal exact same thought at the start of Turbo Kid. The second I heard that song playing with him riding around on his bike, I was like yesss.

You know what was a good found footage project. Marble Hornets. All 90+ episodes of it. You should try to watch it some time. I think it's pretty good, though it moves a bit slowly. Highly suggest watching it with the totheark videos input in chronological order.

...problem with The Force Awakens is that even if its part of a trilogy it SHOULD stand on its own. A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back are amazing one their own, even if you take them out of the trilogy. The Empire Strikes Back even ends on a cliffhanger but that doesn't detract from the two hours that came before. The Force Awakens is almost a remake, they played it safe, they bet on nostalgia to please fans and looks like they won. I rather see some imagination and creativity, specially when it comes to Star Wars which has such a huge universe

I agree with you about everything you said on here and your original video of It Follows. Loved it. Loved the atmosphere, and the out of time feeling. I have heard it may have all taken place in a dream, which is an interesting theory, but I don't think over thinking this movie is a good thing.

I agree with you on Fury Road. I can't quite put my finger on why. It wasn't bad, but when you said "It felt empty", I was like "Yes! that's it." Everything you said is what i was about the movie. It was shot very well. The practical effects were great. I just found it lacking something substantive.

I didn't really dig "It follows". The concept was pretty sweet (the fear of constantly being followed) but I was disappointing to see that they didn't really exploit it to the fullest. It also felt like the protagonist always had friends to count on rather than being isolated with the spooky problem (like the protagonists in "The canal" and "Sinister")..

When you find out why, please let me know. I'm really curious with the fact that iconic horror films didn't unnerve you, but this one did?? I'm sorry, but I truly do not understand that. Agreed. They did so much to stretch it out and all the filler was dumb. It made the audience dislike the characters so much that when bad things started happening, no one cared for their well being. Change it up to a tight 30 min short and it would have been so much better.

No need to apologize for Fury Road. Any movie that basically boils down to driving off into the desert for endless miles . . . . only to at some point stop, turn around and come right back? Just pisses me off to no end. It's one of those movies that you see everyone around you excited for, so you just shrug and go: Yeah, ok.

I really liked Chappie...though I didn't like Die Antwoord. I agree that they were out of place, but I liked how the character Chappie developed. He was reacting to his environment and spent the entire movie learning. I can say that since a lot of people were saying that Die Antwoord were basically playing themselves (like...their real personalities), I would be quite frightened of them producing children.

i dont always agree with your opinions (IE... your praise for the purge Anarchy.) BUT, i really like the optimism you display. its refreshing to have a reviewer look at each film trying to find things to like about it rather then just take a dump on it to entertain others. yeah it can be funny when people rage in there reviews but if i'm looking for a serious and well-though out movie analysis i always end up on your channel.
