Hey, you should do a list called 'top ten cheap games' covering games which are less than $20 or $30 on amazon (or even better, in shops!) for those of us who are building collections on a budget.
@0Regnier
8 жыл бұрын
+Riley W. Can't expect anything with huge boards or a lot of miniatures. But off the top of my head, you should look up King of Tokyo $26~, Survive: Escape From Atlantis $28~, Castle Panic $24~, Smash Up $18~, Forbidden Desert $18~, and Pandemic $30~. There are a lot of lite games out there for cheaper, but they're often small card or dice games, which I generally don't have interest in. It's also worth noting that, if you don't mind buying board games in $100 dollar bulks(free shipping deals), some of the niche-focused online retailers, like Coolstuffinc, sometimes offer much better pricing. They often have games that Amazon doesn't have, or at least not as reasonably priced.

+Riley W. I definitely get what you mean by cheap games though. Like half of the games these guys mention look cool as hell, but end up being 40+ dollars. Rough time being a nerd with a smaller budget.

Wow. Great job on this one all of you. Usually I don't tend to go toward Sam's game choices. For me Sam nailed this one. The way he created his list and the games he chose. Interestingly, my wife (high school) and I (elementary) are teachers and liked how Sam explained his choices. Both of us tend to approach our students as smart; we'd rather aim high instead of aiming low. Thanks for this Top Ten.

I personally liked Sam's approach. In my opinion a gateway game doesn't have to be simple per se (although it definitely helps), but rather it just needs to showcase the best qualities about boardgaming in order to convince a non-believer that there is merit to the hobby. My most successful gateway games are Jamaica, Shadows Over Camelot, Jamaica again, Ticket To Ride: Europe, and Dungeon Fighter.

I'm on the fence with 7 Wonders. It's always worked as a gateway game to me but I've only tried with certain people (people who play video games or IT people who are sort of used to figuring out complicated systems). I don't know that I'd try it with a random family or anything like that. There's SO much to explain. This is what a card looks like, with what it does here and the prerequisites here (sometimes running into trouble explaining that you're not spending the resource, you just need to have it and can use it once per turn), here's the difference between brown and gray cards, here's what a yellow card is and how you can buy stuff from your neighbor, here's what blue cards/victory points are, here's how science works, here's what military does, oh and on top of all of this, here's how you make wonders. None of those things, by themselves, are difficult to grasp for people which is why I think it usually ends up working out, but sometimes I feel myself losing people when I'm explaining the 5th or 6th concept. And sometimes people don't like it when I say "eh, you'll understand how it all works together at the end of the first game."

The Resistance - excellent if it doesn't lose you friends. 06. Carcassone - simple tile laying game. 05. Lords of Waterdeep - intro to worker placement, my gateway game. 04. King of Tokyo - worked amazingly well as a drinking game. 03. Ticket to Ride - so easy that even my parents got it. 02. Pandemic - intro and the gold standard for co-op. 01. Codenames - worked well with every large group I've ever introduced to. Hence my #1.

Man, I have been playing for about 7 years now. And since the very beginning I was amazed by Catan being accepted as a gateway game. It perplexes me to no extend. How can a game be a gateway game when 50% of the game happens during the first turn? By definition it's the worst gateway game in the world. In order to play even remotely well you need to play at least twice. And it's not a short game either. Also dice rolling and open resource exchange. This game has to go. also Lords of Waterdeep is not gateway.

When I think of gateway games I think of games that get non “gamers” to go out and start buying the games rather than what is easy to teach. A lot of these games are definitely easy to play and/or are quick time-wise, but seem to be lacking the “wow” factor that draws people into the hobby as enthusiasts themselves. I also have had terrible luck drawing people in with player elimination games like King of Tokyo (exception being 2 player games). I usually break it down to how many people are playing in that my go to games are: 2-Player = Star Wars X-Wing or Star Realms 3-Player = Takenoko 4-Player = Ticket to Ride or Pandemic 5-Player = Marvel Legendary 6-Player = Colt Express 7-Player = Shadows over Camelot 8-Player = Bang! or Citadels 9-Players or more = Werewolf
@HeadCannonPrime

D6Damager There is no way a 90 minute long tabletop miniature game is a 'gateway' game unless they already play Warhammer. Nearly everything on your list is way too advanced. And technically Werewolf is a party game/activity so it doesn't count.

+bkLEGION3000 90 minutes: still shorter than many games of Pictionary, Risk, and Monopoly. If they like Star Wars a lot then this is a good choice. I have introduced 'geeky' friends to table top gaming/board gaming who weren't interested using Battlestar. That ain't a short game, but it was actually a really good 'in' to get people who weren't interested in gaming to reassess. We had a 3 hour game of that at Uni with people who had no interest in gaming. They are now avid gamers.

I'm with Sam here. A good gateway game depends a lot on the people you're teaching, their skills and interests, so I don't think the order in the list matter. I just had an amazing example of a friend who got introduced to the hobby through BSG (which is already incredibly complicated, in my opinion) and then played TI 3 two weeks later... and she won the game. So, it really depends on the players.

I've had good success both learning and teaching these to casual & new players + my 8 year old will play (and be competitive with most of these)... 10) Cacao - really nice tile laying worker placement. Fun, simple & clean. 9) Takenoko - love this, very pretty and easy to pick up. 8) King of Tokyo - my gateway, plays a good number of people, quick & fun 7) Royals - Crying shame this game doesn't get more love... Fabulous intro to area control, simple card draughting ( think ticket to ride ) but tactical enough to induce craftiness. We LOVE this. 6) Bang! The Dice game. Plays best with a larger groups, but is crazy fun. 5) Forbidden Desert - for me, the better instalment in the "Forbidden" series. Quality co-op. 4) Lords of Waterdeep - my groups favourite worker placement title. 3) Lanterns - wow, so so pretty, and really simple concept. A great gateway game I used for my parents is Ruin. Basically an upgrade from Sorry that allows for a few more choices and backstabbing. Plus, it's always fun to throw huge dice around!

I love it at 22:30 - 22:57, Classic Tom, and why he should always sit between Zee and Sam. I always laugh and have a good time in those parts! and at 44:10 I couldn't keep from LOL!

Thanks for some insights. As i may be playing with almost new players and i actually own some of the mentioned games (Keltis, Dice Town, Alhambra). Already tried Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride (Europe even) and it went fine. But i have some bad experience with teaching 7 Wonders. Though maybe it was just one person who couldn't grasp it till the end of the game, so it frustrated me and made me think i couldn't teach this game.. Also, i wouldn't teach Shadows to new players just because of so many rules and situations. I have literally written a little FAQ for myself to check with while playing it.

The bad thing about Shadows Over Camelot is the game length, it can be long. Also, the problem with 7 Wonders are all the icons, it can be hard to remember what they all do & I feel there is so much going on that it can be difficult to teach.

I liked Sam's approach on this one. Gateway games are quite hard to really order, as you need to take into consideration the target players, and what you want to introduce them to.

I actually think 7 Wonders is best taught at first with Leaders. This is how I learned and it helped me to get a feel for how I wanted to make my city without already knowing the game.

I'm new to board gaming in the last year. The first ten games I bought were:- 1. Ticket to ride 2. Pandemic 3. Dominion 4. Seven Wonders 5. Memoir 44 6. The Resistance 7. Jamaica 8. Carcassonne 9. Shadows Over Camelot 10. For Sale ( my only regret; same opinion as Tiff on The Blender ) None were too difficult for my family and I.

Nice work guys!!! I find all your videos very helpfull. I'm a new gamer too but i think most of your mentioned games are lighter than the games i would use, to bring someone to board game's world. The games i started with were 7 wonders, Pandemic, Power grid, Avallon and The Manhattan project (Zee you are stupid :P ). What about making a top 15 of games with language independence. I suggest more than 10 because someone with a gaming group in which not everybody speaks english (mine is not that good either), would like to see 30-35 different games presented. Thank you for your help to me with your videos. Keep playing!!!

It is great to have a longer list, but if you have one and only shot, TICKET TO RIDE should always be your go to game to try with new players. It is the perfect gateway game, it NEVER goes wrong in such setting. Other games may be good too, but they have a greater chance of falling flat... SPLENDOR and CARCASSONNE would be tied at a distant 2nd. KING OF TOKYO is a much riskier option than most people here think, not because it is difficult, but because a lot of people find the theme stupid (my wife wanted to hit me with the board on the head when I tried playing this with her).

A few of my picks would be 6 Nimmt! (trick taking, plays many players), Tokaido (cute Japanese theme to rope people in), Love Letter (quick and portable), Hanabi (cooperative card game). There are a lot of other filler or quick games that are great gateway games for every type of potential new gamer. I agree with Zee though, most of the time gateway games should be much simpler. It isn't a matter of player intelligence, but of unfamiliarity with the concepts of games. 7 Wonders really is a next-step game since it features a lot of moving parts for someone who isn't a gamer.

Honestly I feel like they're all wayyy underestimating non gamers here. Basically the first real tabletop game my family ever actually played was Dead of Winter, with no experienced gamers to guide us (my brother had played one or two other tabletops but that's it), and though we were pretty slow and made a few big screw-ups, it wasn't frustrating at all and we really enjoyed ourselves - even managed to reach the main objective! I mean, a shorter game is probably better if you're dealing with people who don't know if they're interested in games and don't want to commit to sitting down for three+ hours for one, but just because someone hasn't played many/any games before doesn't mean they can't understand complicated or detailed rules. (Not that Dead of Winter is THE most complicated game, but it's a hell of a lot more complicated than 'yahtzee plus a couple other rules' which they seem to be going for.)

My family like games but they are not hobby gamers at all. This list would be perfect for them with a couple of exceptions. There's no way in the world that I'd ever get them to play something like Dead Of Winter. However, Catan, Carcassonne, Ticket To Ride, King of Tokyo, & Telestrations have been huge hits.

Of the games I own to teach as gateway games. 1) Zombie dice, 2) Catan the Dice game, 3) Dungeon Roll, 4) Boss Monster, 5) King of Tokyo, 6) Munchkin, 7) District-Z, 8) Zombies!!!, 9) Quarriors, and 10) Magic the gathering: Portal. Yes, there are lots of dice games out there. So fun.

anyone else feel that gateway games are simply the best of both worlds, simplistic enough for easy learning plus just enough quirks to keep them interesting - why do people assume that newcomers are going to play gateway game sthen suddenly become intersted in heavy long games?

I actually have a tough time measuring up people when determining what game to play with them for their first 'designer' board game outing. I'll have friends heavy into computer programming and intelligent beyond my comprehension simply not have the attention span to learn the rules for games like Small World or Agricola. They'd much rather play Munchkin three times in a row maybe separated by a game(?) of LCR. I've found it takes people with special personalities who are willing to put the time into learning a heavier game like Fields of Arle or Runewars.

Rick Koeppen Maybe because they want to relax or wind-down. My brother is a software engineer and there are times when he just wants to play quick and simple games.

tim donald I'm sure that is what it is, though I wish they'd give them a shot. My FLGS hosts fun game nights, but sometimes I'd just rather game at home with friends. I'm pretty much the only one in my personal circle who enjoys 'designer' games.

Rick Koeppen That is unfortunate. :[ I'm kinda stuck in the same position except its more of a scheduling issue. Trying to get everyone together for a game day/night can be difficult. Sometimes, I wonder why I even bother buying tabletop games. I play with my family and occasionally friends. Its one of the reasons why I got into tabletop gaming. I could play with strangers. But I'd rather play computer/video games for that.

Rick Koeppen To be honest, I'm heavily into board games and I wouldn't want to learn the rules for Runewars... I generally shy away from games that take 3+ hours to play and a long time to learn, so I can definitely see why a new gamer wouldn't want to get involved. However, I think there are games in between the gateway category and those behemoths that you could all enjoy. But Munchkin?! I have no empathy for them...
@sarahlanger2605

Rick Koeppen I think I get your point, in that it does not depend upon the intelligence of people but their willingness to learn when deciding what to teach them. But your examples are way out of any gateway-terretory, except for Small World, where I think the argument could be made. But the only Rosenberg to make it on any gateway-list is Bohnanza...
