Once upon a time, automobile makers would create economical “base” models and even brands, price them low, and held a reasonable level of quality in hopes of introducing the consumer to their company’s cars, impressing them, and enticing them to move up to more luxurious and expensive models the next time they traded ... “trading up”. Today, many economy models are just built as cheaply as possible and sold using enticements like low, easy financing (bad credit, no credit, stretching the length of the loans to keep the payments as low as possible, etc.) and/or high rebates to move them off the lot; therefore, these models typically hold very low resale values and do not hold up well.

If you're gonna peg the Saturn ion you also need to lump it with the Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 which were mechanical twins with the Saturn ion. The Nissan sentra has been garbage since the early 2 thousands due to Nissan merging with Renault.

My 2003 Mitsubishi Galant just died two weeks ago. Timing belt broke while driving on highway. Odo 166k miles. If it’s not the timing belt, I could get it 200k easily. I would the say the early 2000ish Mitsubishi models are very reliable. They were well built vehicles with a outdated 1990s design. But 1990s were the best years for Japanese cars!

The Saturn Ions actually had nice engines - ecotec 2.2 or 2.4L. The engines were great BUT they would burn a little bit of oil (about a quart to 2 quarts between oil changes) and owners wouldn’t pay attention along with extended mileage between changes and you have your ruined engine. Their interiors were GM junk though.

I can say that the solution for the Stiff ride on 2015 Rogue change to Bilstein shocks and Mevotech control Arms ,sway bar bushing and links in that order .There is a new TCM update reflash for the CVT. NEXT uncheck the engine brake and traction control(not raining) on Driver Assistant center speedo . Accessible though steering wheel .👍

I don't have time to look through all the comments, so I apologize if this question was already asked. But you often say how many vehicles are available nationwide. Is this based on a nationwide search through autotrader or some other site? Just curious. My own vehicle 2018 Honda HRV EX 6 Speed Manual has less than 10 available via that route.

I'm surprised that I don't hear much about Kia/Hyundai GDI Engine issues. Pretty much a 100% engine failure rate due to an engineering design flaw with the rod bearings. My 2012 Kia Optima SX failed at 89k under warranty. I now have a lifetime warranty on the engine, so best believe my kids will be driving this car and maybe there kids. Lol

I guess I am the unicorn. I learned long ago from my family most* cars will last if you take care of them. I had a Plymouth neon 01 from 10k to 175k & a Sebring coupe 04 from 50k to 175k and never had any issues outside of regular maintenance. Oil changes regular and tune ups. The neon needed belts and a water pump around 160k, which is expected. I replaced an O2 sensor and maybe some others sensors after 80k around 100k. The coupe only had 1-2 engine mounts that needed replacement around 115k and 1 or 2 sensors. I sold both in good condition, and still see my old cars riding around near me. It has been 7-8 years since I sold the neon & pretty much gave away the coupe 2 or 3 years ago because I got a new car. A mechanic said I was the unicorn with the neon 😂. I told him it is about how take care of what you have. ❤️

Manny Motta old nissans made before 2000 were bullet proof, I had 1995 altima that lasted near 30000 and 1997 Sentra that also lasted same millage range. Original engine and transmission, witch out for cross member rust witch was the reason to get rid for it since it wasn’t worth the repair cost about 400$. Nissan merged by Renault witch made the quality crap especially after nissan went for CVT Transmision ! Toyota is the most reliable however new ford trucks and or even old chevy trucks are reliable, i have 2003 suburban witch is excellent built quality comparing to armada, the only issue I had with it was replacing the entire break lines witch is common issue for 2000 to 2006 Chevy trucks. Do your homework. Good luck.

This is BS its not the mileage its the hours the engine and car have run a lot of city cars get short runs from cold and spend a lot of time in gridlock any modern car will do over 200,000 miles high way running.
