Im the guy that gets a BIH and makes the first shot, just barely puts the cueball where I want for the 2nd shot and it gets worse on each successive shot until I miss or snooker myself on 4th/5th shot. CJ Wiley had a story that he played some Filipino in Seattle for money. CJ said the rails were bad and the cue ball would jump off the table on the break. So he eventually adjusted, but it was too late. Knowing a table is not level like yours gives you a big advantage. I wonder how often money players rigged a table or found a bad playing table and learned how to adjust to it to win money.

I play league in a smoking bar, so the tables play VERY slow due to the cigarette ash that builds up on the felt (even after brushing the cloth). The speed of the balls is nearly half of the speed of a normal table. Would it be more beneficial to shoot the same patterns that I typically do at a different speed, or would it be better to learn new patterns to play at this slower speed for this particular location? Love the content, and thank you for helping me improve!!!!!

Great instruction Dr. Dave. I’ve been struggling with speed control during league play. I like the drill you suggested, I’ll use that in my warm up routine to get a feel of how things are going prior to the match. Jerry Briesath had a good explanation of speed control that helped me. The example he used was if you hit the cue ball at 10 mph on a 1/4 ball hit the cue ball will be going 7.5 after contact and so on. It gave me way to wrap my head around cue ball speed after contact.

Hi Dr. Dave. Former Boot Camp attendee here. Hope you and your game are doing well. You spoke about your table being out of level and this happens to me all the time as I live in a hundred year old house in Dallas, TX with a pier and beam foundation so the house shifts slightly all the time due to rain, humidity, heat, etc. and obviously the table level changes right along with the house. I have a bottle jack and wood shims which I use to re-level the table about every two months. I have a high end level so I am able level the table very accurately. I begin by leveling along the long rail using the wood shims and then pretty much let the short rail go as when I try to level along the short rail it screws up the long rail level. My question is how do professionals level a table to get it level along both the long rail and the short rail? I'm wondering if when you re-cover and re-level your table you could make a video of that and have the professionals explain how they do it. Thanks for your videos. They are always incredibly informative with great practical examples of how to practice the principles being presented.

Hey Dave I'm a little lost on your rolling cue ball/object ball distance tip. In your example you're about a diamond apart and after the hit cue ball rolled up 3 diamonds the object would then roll up 7x3 which makes it 21 diamonds?! Its seems more like the sum(using diamond to diamond distance as the metric)of the cue ball's travel with the object ball's desired target gives a more accurate solution. Desired distance(ob)from its original point(1st diamond) is 7 diamonds up and 5 back is 12 diamonds in total without my second calculation which is subtract the cue ball's total travel distance. Which is this,1 diamond from the object ball plus the additional cue ball's target distance of 4 diamonds(from the original ball's location) adds up to 12 diamonds. So my target location for the object is 12 diamonds away in total My ob is 7 diamonds from the first rail. The ob will need to come back 5 diamonds. The cue ball will need to follow the object ball 4 diamonds plus the distance from the object ball 5 diamonds which equals the target point 12 points in distance. CB's movement(4+1=5) OB's movement(7+5=12) Cue ball travels the distance the object ball travels from the first rail to the target. OBTDT 12d's minus OBDFTFR 7d's= 5d's total cue follow needed to hit the target.
@DrDaveBilliards
4 жыл бұрын
The OB loses about 1/2 its speed off each cushion rebound. I was going to present the math, be I'm sure most viewers would not be interested. Speed control is something you need to develop a feel for anyway. FYI, the math/physics proof of the 7x factor is here: billiards.colostate.edu/technical_proofs/new/TP_B-12.pdf
@MrADVANCEDTEK

Oh ok DUH I'm an idiot or as I say about myself Ediot. Yeah your right no one would take a look at that. I've discovered that it's easier to understand if I think of the object balls speed and not distance. Cause I can't put my head around the 7 times cue balls distance. The total should be 21 diamonds. Just didnt seem to travel that far. But oh well. The math has to be right.

@@DrDaveBilliards Great video by the way, one of your best in my opinion for early players - speed control is one of the most deceptively difficult things to do in pool (so much so that many bar players never bother learning), but if done right can really unlock a world of potential...at least, I think so. Anyway, I found it extremely helpful

@@Kungfujoe1110 Thanks. I'm glad you liked it. Even intermediate and some advanced players "have room for improvement" with speed control.

Serious questions: 1. Is a quetec cynergy 15k better than the predator revo or vice versa. 2. Does the butt on a cue effect how solid the cue feels or is that just the shaft
@DrDaveBilliards
4 жыл бұрын
None of the CF shafts are "better" than the others ... just different. For more info, see: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue/carbon/ Concerning feel, everything has an effect per the info here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/cue/feel/ But the butt has no effect on CB deflection, per the info here: billiards.colostate.edu/faq/squirt/endmass/

Just curious. Where does the ~7x the distance rule come from? Did you derive it mathematically or it is just from observation?
@DrDaveBilliards

It comes from math and physics. If you are really curious, it is here: billiards.colostate.edu/technical_proofs/new/TP_B-12.pdf

Point n.4 : hypothesis: object ball travels 7 times the distance of the cue ball Example shot 1: cue ball travels 1 diamond, object ball travels 7 diamonds. Deviation from hypothesis: 0 diamonds Example shot 2: cue ball travels 2.5 diamonds, object ball travels 11 diamonds. Deviation from hypothesis ~ 6.5 diamonds Example shot 3: cue ball travels 3.5 diamonds, object ball travels 12 diamonds. Deviation from hypothesis ~ 12.5 diamonds Dr.Dave: "(...) this relation is constant" Well, ok...

The OB loses about 1/2 its speed off each cushion rebound. I was going to present the math, be I'm sure most viewers would not be interested. Speed control is something you need to develop a feel for anyway.

1/4 ball hit cue ball loses 1/4 speed,, 1/2 a 1/2, and 3/4 hit 3/4's of it's speed. When does ANYTHING ever work out like that???? The "equation gods" were not even trying THAT day. I'm a retired engineer, not a physicist, but still, I'm shocked. :-/ Maybe a tangent related thing, slope about one around the origin? Too old and too retired (and too lazy) to think about it. Actually I did start to think about it while I was writing that but quickly caught myself...whew! Physics and pool, definitely a relationship there. Plus side is by making this stupid comment, I will possibly remember that for more than two minutes. "I know, my table isn't level" When I saw that, I thought you might have had a gyro and some control on that ball. That was too funny. "On a lag always try to hit the rail" Yeah, sort of gives you twice the error budget. Dude, just get a machinist's level and fix it, it's not difficult. It helps to measure each direction in multiple places on the table, especially if it is not a single piece slate. At least you can get the table generally level until the next cloth replacement.
@DrDaveBilliards
3 жыл бұрын
I know how to level a table, I just don't usually do it myself (partly because it is never usually very bad). I just wait until my "table guy" comes to change the cloth. He is much better at leveling the table, and has the patience for it. Concerning the fractional speeds, I was also a little shocked when I saw how simple the rule is. If you are curious to see the derivation, it is here: billiards.colostate.edu/technical_proofs/TP_3-2.pdf Enjoy!

@@DrDaveBilliards Good stuff, thanks. Those graphs are pretty easy to keep in mind, the general shapes anyway. I saw the bolded portion...great minds and all that. Keep the vids coming, as long as it's fun, you have taught me MANY things and improved my game dramatically over what it likely would have been without all the info you so generously provide...I'm pretty sure it will be total crap if and when I get back to the hall, seems like I haven't touched a stick in forever, since the shut downs (which I support). Now if the biomed/geneticist guys and gals would just come up with a vaccine, huh? My daughter and her husband got it, and they said it was BRUTAL, far beyond any previous flu either had experienced...mileage varies though, I hear. And the table leveling, yeah, so much to do, so little time...I remember those pre-retirement days. Think of all the pool you have coming up at that point ... :-) Sorry about the off topic parts, just my normal mode. I have a feeling your physics classes would be more fun than the ones I took.
