Doofenshmirtz had a horrible childhood because his parents Neglecting, public shaming, Family comparison, and even abandoning Doofenshmirtz for no apparent reason. The guy could easily take all of that anger out on his daughter but would rather take over the tri scape area then even Think about doing any harm to his daughter. Thank you for saying it, it's nice to know not every animated father falls into the incompetent, border- line abusive moron who doesn't deserve to reproduce stereotype. I think a lot of dads fall into this trope to preach the idea of female empowerment. I have no problem with the whole girl power thing, but I don't think dumbing down every male character is the way to do it. Not only is it degrading to men, but it's also patronizing to women, because you're basically saying "In order to even have the chance to be seen as equals, he has to be dumbed down to an incompetent dumbass who has no idea what he's doing if you wanna be seen as an equal opponent/ advisory." We need more animated dads like this.

Isn't it also degrading to women? Not disregarding or belittling your excellent comment and points, at all. He can't have pulled a 180 since getting married and the stigma against divorces is almost, if not entirely, gone. I'd much rather have her competence and empowerment shown off by having her pick a man who was her equal and they both treat each other like that, equals.

A big reason that we see this Trope all over the place is that - in general - Women find the "Clueless Dad" trope Funny and Men find the trope innocuous - ie: women will laugh and men won't complain about it. The dad in my cartoon isn't even dumb. He's just trying to cope with a lot in the second half of the season I'm writing, plus he tries his hardest to protect his son from a serial killer trying to absorb the years out of his life out of sheer enjoyment of it. And after his wife dies, he has his daughter's memory blocked at least until the day after she graduates high school, and steps up when the situation fails and he needs to help calm his daughter down from the memories being triggered AT THE SAME TIME she has her first period at the age of 12. Not to mention he's trying to raise his second child after his wife dies soon after childbirth, holding her in his arms with their newborn son, while also dealing with the guilt of not saving his best friend and his son in time, and even still trying to help raise his second son to be both strong and have his magical abilities be fully understood. Yes, my cartoon does take place in a world that isn't totally like our own, what's your point? Considering the dad can go from Small Might to Tall Might essentially, he's gotta make a damn good case for what he does. Not to mention he gave up his dream job to find something more financially stable for his kids, PLUS so his kids wouldn't have an absent dad. My gods, looking it at this, it feels like I'm writing something either totally original or something that's already been done in books or a movie series.

I'm glad that you're deviating from the "stupid dad" trope, but I do want to point out that I said "a lot of..." and not "all". I really like how Splinter in the Nickelodeon Ninja Turtles show emphasized how you could still have honor while not fighting fairly. I mean, they’re ninjas. Assassins. The very DEFINITION of not fighting fairly. Yet every other version of the show seems to forget that. In fact, the theme song for the one made for the Fox Box essentially had the line “never fight unless somebody else starts it”, an admittedly weird credo for a NINJA to follow. But in the Nickelodeon one, he teaches his boys that the difference between fighting dirty and fighting unfairly is discipline.

@@channeleditor9335 I think we can all agree on this for the mythological Zeus, but Disney's Hercules deviates so much from the myths that animated Zeus can safely be considered an entirely different person. As for whether he belongs on this list? Well... While he clearly cared very much for his son and wanted the best for him, in the end he didn't actually DO much for him. Gave him Pegasus, answered his questions about his heritage, and honored his wish to be mortal at the end of the movie, and that's about it. Granted, outright telling Hercules how he could achieve his goal would have undermined it; he understood Hercules needed to learn heroic sacrifice on his own. Whilst he’s not “technically” a dad per se, instead being Huey, Dewey and Louie’s uncle, Donald from DuckTales 2017 easily takes the cake as one of the best animated dads for me. Sure, at the start of the series he’s overprotective, but has extremely good reason for it- he’s seen the worst the world has to offer, and it cost him his sister, who he spent 10 years believing was dead, as well as his relationship with Uncle Scrooge- no way is he letting his only remaining family be at risk of danger anymore. Also, he learnt to work through his overprotectiveness in the FIRST EPISODE, so that earns him some points in my book. He doesn’t just care for HDL because his sister can’t, either- he shows he truly loves them countless times- he can’t even keep his mind off them during work in Woo-Ooo, and he’s quick to fight- and easily defeat- any foes that dare threaten HDL, from the Beagle Boys to an entire army of shadows, including one that was wearing the powerful Gizmoduck armour. The thing that truly shows how good of a father he is, though, was all of his actions in “Whatever Happened to Donald Duck”. In it, we learn that the reason Donald’s rage is so tame in this series compared to his other incarnations is because he sought Anger Management lessons just to ensure he was the best father he could be for HDL, channelling his rage into parental instincts. We also see him fully lose control of his rage at the mere THOUGHT of Lunaris going after the kids, and even being able to stand his ground solo better than any other character who fought against Lunaris, and then showed his adoration of the kids by hopping into an experimental rocket that could’ve killed him just to get back to HDL, and surviving re-entry based on sheer determination to return to the kids. If these aren’t the traits of an amazing father, I don’t know what are

One of my favorite animated dad's is Mr. Gar from OK KO Let's Be Heroes. He isn't K.O's biological father but he is his stepdad. Mr. Gar's great because they show how inexperienced he is with little kids, but he still makes an effort to protect and help K.O. Eventually he even opens open to K.O. about things he's never told anyone before and tries everything he can to cheer K.O. up. But it's obvious he doesn't like K.O. at first but they actually grow really close. He's strict but willing to let K.O. on missions and is a really good mentor in general. It's satisfying to see K.O. and Mr. Gar to work towards a loving, caring relationship. (Plus OK KO is real underrated and this show's characters are great)

I appreciate his parenting style in general and how he managed to raise a child without a house in his emotional constitution, but regarding the struggleing of steven in steven universe future I think he gave him to less structure in his life. By this I don't necessarily mean every day must be planned, more that regularitys and "safe time" in a day can help children feel more secure, so they can deal with themselves and their problems during activities like playing guitar. espacially for steven who sometimes dealt with life-threatening situations these planned "safe times" could have been esential to prevent the trauma he needs to deal with. So I think of it a little more ambivalent...

I like Rapunzel’s dad in Tangled After Ever After because he developed so well after being away from Rapunzel from so long. Even in the movie you could see he wasn’t over her disappearance while most fictional parents just focus on finding the long lost child, but you never see them actually miss them or the trauma the parents go through even after they get their child back. Rapunzel’s dad shows great improvement from the beginning to the end of the series. He is very protective of his daughter and grows to get to know her and be supportive, he learns that he isn’t actually protecting her by keeping her locked up in the kingdom and is only being another Gothel to her. Her dad learns to trust Rapunzel and her boyfriend and makes an effort to know both of them as a person. Rapunzel’s dad tries hard to do what’s best for his daughter, even if it isn’t the best decision in the end, he learns from his mistakes rather than let his pride take over for his daughter. Rapunzel’s dad is definitely one of my favorite fictional fathers

Seems that Pixar is very good at making good dad characters. Aside from Marlin, we have Mr. Incredible, Hector, Merida's father, Riley's dad from Inside Out, heck, remember the end of Wall-E where that guy and that lady catch the babies when the ship tilts? Pixar movie families are always good. Even in movies like Brave, Finding Nemo, or Coco, where "restrictive parent vs. free-spirited child" is a main conflict, it's merely the _catalyst_ of the main conflict rather than being _the_ main conflict.

What about Doc Hudson from Cars since he acts like a mentor/father figure to Lightning albeit after he and Lightning had that falling out. But he REALLY tries his hardest to be a loving, good dad, despite his experience with his own father. He listens to Vanessa, while still disciplining her. He is understanding when she doesn't want to get into evil, and even listens when Vanessa tells him to try being good. One of the things I also LOVED about Doofenshmirtz is that he actually cared about his relationship with his daughter while still being evil. I mean, come on! He doesn't actually try to prevent her from falling in love because "I want you to stay my little girl forever". He has some issues with her growing up, but he gets over it. I find the relationship between kids and adults in the KND universe really interesting and very weird and I think their relationship with their parents is kinda what stops this show from going really dark. I have a couple of good dads in mind. :) One is Tiana's dad from The Princess and the Frog. Sure, he didn't get a lot of screen time, but during that short amount of time, we were able to see how good of a father he was. He taught Tiana how to cook, and planned on naming his restaurant after her. He also taught her good values, like sharing with others by sharing their gumbo with their neighborhood, and to never lose side of the more important things in life like love and family. He also worked really hard to support his family, and despite coming home from a long day of work, he's always happy to see his little girl. Two is Triton. I know he was kind of a dick throughout The Little Mermaid, but when seeing the third installment of the franchise, I can't help but feel sorry for him. He lost his wife, and doesn't want his daughter to share her fate. But when thinking of Triton being a good dad, I focus on the end of the first movie. He lets Ariel go with Eric so she could be happy. That's a hard thing for a father to do, but he was willing to make that sacrifice anyway. I tear up every time I hear Ariel say, "I love you, Daddy." Third is Archimedes from Tarzan. He kind of falls under the "dumb dad" trope, since he acts a bit childish. But he certainly isn't stupid. He has a deep knowledge of wildlife, particularly gorillas. I love that he and Jane bond over animals, and it's so sweet to see them geek out together over finding gorilla nests. Like Triton, he's willing to let his daughter go in the end so she could be with the man she loves. But, I love that how he basically just says screw it and joins Jane in the jungle. That's true dedication to his daughter. XD

To be fair, it was originally a subversion of the "father knows best" trope, and originally the biggest example: Homer Simpson, wasn't so much a dumb dad as he was a below-average guy who just sort of had his life spiral into being a parent, and Marge was pretty much the exact same: While Homers defunct parenting was based around him being easily angered, Marge's was based around being in denial of the negatives. Case in point, her calling Bart her "Special little guy" and being about as soft on him as Homer was harsh on him. Now they've turned Homer into a bumbling Peter Griffin manbaby, and Marge, as a result of not being as much of a focus anymore, seems a lot less flawed then she was (after all, how are you going to notice the flaws of someone who refuses to admit anything is wrong with her life even though she knows EVERYTHINGS wrong with it if you put them in the background?).

He would throttle Bart at a moments notice, while she would ignore the problems in her life/kids and try to speak of good qualities which she herself didn't really believe. And when you actually look at how THEY both were raised as kids, the heart was that for however bad THEY were as parents, they were at least trying to be better then THEIR parents. Homer's dad pretty much was completely hands-off-dont-care-just-dont-get-killed with him, and Marge's mom (and sisters) were very judging of her life choices. And HOW did Homer and Marge BECOME parents? The ultimate in "No clue what we're doing- we're just winging it and got thrust into all of this"; Homer knocked her up and was in a mad dash to marry her before Bart was born out of wedlock. And after that- ALL his choices were sort of forced onto him.

I never really thought about the Buffoonish Father trope, mainly because my dad kinda fit it. He was fat, goofy, not that smart, and it was really clear our mom was the one keeping everything running. But he was a good father, took care f us, and did what needed to be done to keep a roof over our heads. And unsurprisingly, I didn't really start to appreciate my dad until after he died. And it happened when I was eighteen; young enough that I still had that bullshit teenage rebellion thing going on when he was alive, but old enough to be just self-reflective enough to realize I should have respected him more after he was gone.

My dad kinda fits the trope as well. He’s kinda fat(but that runs in the family, both sides), tells annoying dad jokes no matter how many times I tell him to stop (and not once has it been the “hi ___, I’m dad” joke), and has a five second memory and sucks at paying attention (he has ADD, which I inherited). It's also important to remember that maturity is not measured in constant seriousness, or even worrying about every little detail of life. Many fathers are great parents, yet never receive credit for it, because the subtlety of how they hold the family together is completely eclipsed by the mother's more constant, obvious, undeniable attention to family needs. Men are designed to hold things together in others ways, and like you, many don't realize this until after he is gone. Suddenly, they realize that he was holding the family together, and teaching them irreplaceable life lessons - his methods just weren't so direct and measurable. For example, I've had several friends who always thought their dad was an immature loser who would fall apart without their mom around to keep him in line, but after losing him, they discovered that, behind the scenes, their mom was the one who needed held together (obviously both do in many respects), and the family completely ceased to function as it should without him, their mother making terrible decision after terrible decision without him there to balance her... Men and women are two very different sides to a coin, and both personalities are needed to bring up a child in the best way. Notice, I'm not saying that single parents are always a bad thing. I'm merely saying that it's best with both... It's sad...

Here's one that I don't see a lot of people talk about; Ben and Gwen and Grandpa Max. Max has essentially been there from the beginning of their adventure. You could really argue that Max has been there more for Ben and Gwen more than their parents have. Max has always been there for Ben helping him grow as a hero and a person and Gwen too. He can be strict with them at times but he's also playful with his grand kids. He loves them both so much like they were his own children and would go to literally the ends of the earth for them. He's even acted as a father figure towards Kevin, who lost his dad early on and went through a really rough phase of his life. Max is not only the greatest plumber of all time but also one of the best dads.

Merida's father in Brave stands out to me because of how close she is with him. He knows her well enough to try and help Elinor figure out how to speak with her, and when Merida and Fergus both poke fun at the guys fighting for her hand, it's adorable. The only downside is the way he ignores her in the climax because conflict, but considering he was torn by grief, I guess it's understandable. I also enjoy how he supports Merida defending herself with her bow and arrow because no matter your gender, it's good to know how to fight! Mr. Ping from Kung Fu Panda is also an amazing adoptive father.

I have to say; one who really impresses me is Dave from Alvin and the Chipmunks. Especially his depictions in the "Meet Frankenstein/Wolfman" movies. He shows his ability to be a disciplinarian, while also being legitimately kind and caring, and offering sage advice to his less-confident child when it's needed. I always wanted a guy like him as a dad. Plus, in "Wolfman," he was authentically-brave, even willing to go up against a werewolf in single combat, in order to protect his kids. Dave may not be the strongest guy around, but he totally rocks.

my favorite animated dad is Rick Mitchell. on my first watching of Mitchells vs. the machines, I was kinda worried that he's very Dracula-ish, an overprotective dad who doesn't understand his daughter's interest, but the movie does a really good job of showing you were he's coming from. Katie's interests are just not something that he likes, but he still tries to bond with her. Also an improvement over the usual overprotective dad is that the movie is about the family dynamic, so neither Rick nor Katie have to be totally in the right, instead both their arcs are about seeing the other's side. By the end of the movie Rick learns to accept his daughter's affinity for crazy KZitem videos, and supports her. I think Mitchells pulled of the overprotective dad thing best because Rick is not totally right nor wrong, (as these sorts of stories tend to be), instead he's well meaning and loving, but has a hard time connecting with Katie, and seeing them come together is a joy. also Doofenshmirtz is second best for just being amazing

I think another good moment for Drake was in "The life, the Negaverse, and everything", in which he was teleported to the Negaverse, anuniverse the opposite of his own where Negaduck ruled. Basically, Gosalyn was a sweet little girl who never had a DarkWing to save her, or a Drake Mallard to be her dad. The opposite of the fearsome 5 (minus Negaduck), the friendly 4 tried to convince DW to help them, Drake refused until he contemplated Nega Gosalyn's life without a real father figure, and that was what made him stay, not glory from the citizens of the Negaverse, no, it was all for Gos.

Yeah, that moment touched my heart. "For you Gosalyn, I'll stay." The compassion that poured out of him in that moment was breathtaking. And another that just made me cry was in "Quivverwing Quack." Gosalyn storms up the stairs, yelling that she's not a baby girl anymore. He watches her sadly, and says, "But you are." 😭 Drake Mallard, truly a great father. I can't wait for Gosalyn to appear in the Ducktales reboot! She's coming later this season!

One of my favorite animated dads is also splinter, for the same reasons and more. Those extra reasons are: 1. When shredder tells him that he took his daughter away, he tries his best to get karai to know the truth, and outright refuses to hurt her, even when she’s controlled by a brain worm, and is distraught when he loses her again because of the way karai reacted to the healing mantra near the end of season three 2. In the finale to season 3, he’s willing to side with the shredder, knowing damn well what bad things can happen by making that choice (and they did anyways) 3. He always tries to get people to walk on the right path, even if the people he’s trying to convince are very evil people.

Stan and Ford Pines! Yeah they're not the best at times (especially Stan) but they do go to great lengths to protect Dipper and Mabel (especially Stan and more so if you watch the series finale), try to understand them as best they can, will put their needs first (when they realize it), never talk down to them just cause they're kids, is willing to do the kid like things they do and can give pretty good advice when the moment calls for it. Plus giving what little we know of Dipper and Mabel's lives back in California, I think it's safe to say that Stan and Ford are more involved in their niece and nephew's lives than their own parents are. Also Stan gets extra points for basically raising Soos into the somewhat capable young man he is in the show and still having a good parental like relationship after the other has grown up into an adult.
