Determining the best suited brushless motor for an application is no easy task. There are a lot of numbers written as specifications by manufactures that contribute to the confusion. And no one goes in to detail on how to make sense of all these numbers.
Well the big ticket item here is that all these parameters must work together to achieve a happy power system. Get one of these parameters wrong and you may run in to trouble.
The first mistake when selecting a brushless motor is the selection of the motor Kv value. The motor Kv value is responsible for the total RPM per volt of electricity applied. Too much can result in failure.
The second mistake is trying to run too much voltage to the motor without considering the total amount of load. Voltage does not kill the motor but if you demand more RPM by increasing the voltage and you do not change the load, you can ultimately destroy your brushless motor.
The third mistake when selecting a brushless motor is related to the physical size of the motor. By not selecting a large enough motor for the task, you run the risk of burning out the motor. The size of the motor is responsible for dissipating the waste heat energy. Too small and your motor will not be able to deliver the demanded amount of power. Similar to above this also will result in the same destruction of the brushless motor.
Keep these in mind when selecting a brushless motor in order to optimize the reliability of the system as a whole.
