Cool! I picked up the Henry Single Shot Slug gun and yesterday the pretty Brass Single Shot, this Henry turkey was on my radar too, but I am really liking my pretty one I bought the other day. To me there is something I really like about single shot that I can put my finger on, in fact I really don't use my pump or semi unless I snow goose hunting.

I have a bright green fiber optic front sight on mine and a Sims Limbsaver Recoil pad to tame that mule kick and real nice soft leather sling for I could carry that gun all day long since it's so light weight so thanks to mom and dad for that neat Christmas gift back in 1978 for my very first gun !!! All good points. The only note you mentioned I have issue with is shooting 12 gauge 3.5" shells. Any reason in particular why? Just your preference? Personally, recoil has kicked my butt over the years. I switched to a 20 gauge 5 or 6 years ago and never looked back. With the new types of turkey loads available, it's just not needed to shoot 3.5" loads. I don't knock those that do though. Everybody has their own preferences and 99% of them kill turkeys just fine lol. I've considered getting a single shot 20 gauge for a couple of years now.

I have challenged myself to shoot a single shot before in upstate NY, If you don’t know about upstate NY turkey it’s hard. They like to be far out and a bunch of other factors. Typically I shoot a Winchester SX3 3 1/2 magnum 12 gauge. I’ve shot 12 birds with that gun. I have my cousin shooting a over under 20 gauge and I do like the break action but a single shot is a challenge because of barrel length and aiming. a light gun shakes more than a heavy gun and it makes you miss. Semi auto guns typically absorb recoil. Other than that nothing against the single shot
@paulellsworth7679
3 жыл бұрын
I shot my first ever turkey in the fall of 1979 with a single shot shot gun. But I've evolved hunting Turkeys over the last 40 years. From a 3 1/2 12 gauge pump in the 90s that weights more than I care to carry anymore. To the 20 gauge 870 youth pump I carry now. (Man that's a great gun) and absolutely lights out dead right there all the way out to 50 yards, so I don't need a longer barrel. How much further do you need to shoot to kill a turkey anyway? No chance of me turning that little 870 for any 12 Guage anything for turkey as long as we can so get the quality of shells available today. However if I was going to buy a new shogun for turkey it would be an over an under. Not one of the really expensive fancy sporting clays versions. There are several available around $500-$600 range. The reason being is that I could then have one barrel with one load and choke tube to shoot that bird at 50 yards and a different barrel with a different choke tube and shell to shoot the ones that sneak in closer. With no other gun can you select what you need in the moment like that. I whole heartedly agree with your comment on only having one shell to force yourself to be more patient and make a better shot. But in 40 years of hunting Turkeys I can count the birds I actually got a second shot on with one hand. And I can't remember ever having actually shot any with the third. So regardless of how many you have loaded up you'd better plan on killing them with that first shot. I like the Remington 870 because I can carry it with two in the magazine and none in the chamber then it's simple to load one once I'm set up without fumbling around for a shell like I would be with a single shot unless I carried it loaded... Love your videos.
@ModernMountainMan
3 жыл бұрын
I love the purpose of use that you mentioned with the over/under. In fact I have run that exact set up. That second barrel can be quite heavy. Last year I went on a 10 mile Turkey hike with an O/U without a sling.... never again :) Have you seen my "Top 10 reasons for an Over/Under" video?
@paulellsworth7679
3 жыл бұрын
I completely understand that. Last year I hiked over 60 miles in total over 5 days in the South Dakota Black Hills chasing Merriams. I'll never hunt turkeys without a sling on any gun! This year I'm going to Oklahoma for Rio's and expect the same miles on my boots. And it's not any easier in the Ozarks of Missouri where I hunt turkeys at home. Great video thanks!
