Thanks for all the info, I'm actually looking to pick up some of these for a totally different application... big pike in skinny water. The info you've got here is extremely helpful. Post spawn I'm usually trying to cover lots of 2-5' water, usually rocky flats that will steal any lure that touches bottom. Took years but I finally realized that striper fishermen had lures that were actually designed for this type of thing.

That’s great. What’s your setup? I’ve only caught pickerel but man do they bite me off a lot. I’m usually multi species fishing so i don’t use a steel leader.

@@MDYakFishing I grew up in canoes, tried kayaks and found I generally prefer canoes. When the big fish come in shallow like that they are feeding, but spooky. If the wind isnt too bothersome I drift and cast, if the water is dirty trolling works better. A lot of times just using waders and a long steelhead rod can be more efficient. Most seasons I manage to get a dozen or so around the 40" mark.

I'm really enjoying your videos. Now I've got the bug to start trolling again. Looks like I'll be getting a couple of Yo-Zuri minnows soon. Are you using the floating or sinking version of the Yo-Zuri's you mentioned? It's nice to know that the stock hooks are good. Have you ever tried switching out to single hooks?
@MDYakFishing

I appreciate the feed back, thanks! I usually keep the mid-body treble hook and change out the tail hook for an in-line hook. Striped bass almost always go for the head of a bait/lure so you still get good hookups. If you are in some blue fish, they are tail biters and will miss a bunch with in-line tail hooks. The problem with changing out the hooks is it changes the action of the lure. I try to match the weights of split rings and hooks to the original system. I also find that short shank trebles are vastly superior to regular/long shank hooks as they will significantly alter the action. The smaller yo-zuri lures I change the mid-body hook with a #4 Gamakatsu 2x strong magic eye treble paired with a #5 Owner hyper wire split ring. The tail I replace with an Owner 1/0 3X single replacement hook with the same Owner #5 split ring. I use floating yo-zuri lures most of the time as the suspending and sinking lures haven't performed as well.

@@MDYakFishing For running single tail hooks and maintaining the action, I've had good luck using plastic trailers to tune the drag/weight and keep it running properly. If have to use a trailer, I will try to tune the hook size to get the lure to run true with either a 3" Mr Twister or a 2" hoochie. Then I can get by with just a couple basic plug colors and run different colored trailers on them.

This striper and kayak fishing is all brand new for me, I find your videos extremely helpful. you said you use 12lb test braid line, I wanted to know if your using a leader. mono-flouro, how long and what lb test. Great video. we green horns count on this type of info. Thanks

No problem. I’m using a 18” 20lbs flouro leader. 50lbs Power Pro swivel on one end and a 50lbs tactical anglers clip on the other. Because of this i always remove the split rings on the jerk baits I attach to with the clip.

While shopping for the yo-zuri 3d crystal minnow I noticed it has an advertised depth of 3' but you have them in your 6'-8' range. Do they run deeper than advertised or is there a mistake on the website? I'm just double checking before I drop some money on them.

I really appreciate this video. You mentioned there are ways to impart better action on lures that don't have it out of the box. How can I tweak a lure to help in that way?
@MDYakFishing
Жыл бұрын
The way i adjust lures is with the hook selection. I change the weight distribution and sometimes it results in better action and sometimes worse. Poor performing trolling lures I generally pop them as I’m trolling to add action and that works well.
@i1bike

You change it with pliers. If you pull up tying eye upwards it will lower lure's action, if you pull it down it will increase lure's action. Basically, the closer tying eye is to the lip the more action the lure will have. The wider the lip the more roll the lure will have. You can also pull tying eye little bit to the right or to the left if you want that your lure moves slightly to the side. That is also used to space out trolling lures that are close to each other, or if you are casting/spinning and you want your lure to follow some stucture, wether its a man made wall or a reef. That is why split rings exist, they correct the lure's action if the lure wasnt perfectly balanced in factory. People remove split rings thinking it ruins the action, while it actually makes it better. I personally remove split rings, but then i correct lure's action manually. I hope i helped, greetings from adriatic sea, croatia, europe !

Great info looking to transition from shore to kayak & this is very helpful. Regarding the plugs with too many treble hooks have you heard of the “ one hook solution”? If you google it theres is a great video, but its basically a worm weight on a bent steel wire. It helps protect the fish & actually enhances or duplicates the action of the plug.
@MDYakFishing

I have experimented heavily with single inline hooks as replacements. Some plugs, like Cotton Cordell Redfin respond well but others have horrible action, like bomber 15a. I'm glad it works for the plugs that you use.

Bought the Mag but the 4 incher seems not even on the lip. Kinda swims to one side. The 5 incher is fine. Same issue for the 5 inch Redfin...offset lip and with a slighty left run/swim. The action on the Redfin is superb minus the left running. The Mag seems like a worser SP in my opinion, but with the Mag you can jerk whereas the SP you can only straight retrieve as it is more of a crank. They're all cheap to me so no biggie. Just thought I share my opinion. Just love trying new lures. To be really honest, frlm the shore, the XRap will kill all these for a reason or two.

Thanks for the feedback. If your lure is running to one side the fix is to bend the lure tie towards the other side slightly. This will adjust the tracking. I like hearing people that have had great success with Rapala lures. I've fished them for many years and I never catch as many fish as I do with other lures.

Thanks for watching. Some of the lures are better than others at casting and retrieving. That's due to the weight transfer system some of these lures employ. Though I've casted all these lures and caught fish.
