they are able to put up such an awesome show because every single performer, designer, and staffs were proud to be part of the show. Its the first time ever that China is opened to the world like this and this show meant a lot and was seen important in building an image for themselves to all other countries. They had big motivations, and enough resource to make it happen. If u ask me, we will never see another opening that can top this, not even China will top it if they ever host olympics again

Ahh, the torch. Probably the only thing Yao ming couldn't reach by his height alone. This ceremony was epic, intruiging and very beautiful. I liked the giant calligraphic painting the most. Such skill accuracy and agility.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics was the best opening ceremony ever. It totally blew the world. Except for the lighting of the couldron, everything was spectacular- the fireworks, the presentation. Well of course, the lighting of the couldron still goes to 1992 Barcelona Olympics. That was totally awesome!!!

This is spectacular, im so proud to be chinese, China has really shown the world what kind of country it is. The chinese are naturally very hard working and its not stereotypical to say that the chinese are smart and hard working because thats what we're born to be, i bet many countries would laze out china has really given its reputation and i think it would be hard for any country to beat the standards of the ceremony China has given us. WOOO i love CHINA

@blakdragn, the Beijing committee originally planned to have a flying phoenix light the cauldron, but the IOC would not allow it for safety concerns. This means that unless the IOC throws safety out the window, we'll probably never see another torch lit from afar.

@Fevernova99, that's the advantage of having a government with so much power. If something needs to get done, it gets done (assuming they act). There are no loopholes to find, no crawlspaces to squeeze through, no teeth to pull. Beijing's air too polluted? Shut down factors and pull half the cars off the road. The railroads need upgrading? Upgrade them. An earthquake destroyed an entire down? It'll be rebuilt in a year. Delays? What delays?

The tickets for Chinese nationals were 800 yuan each. They were a bit more expensive for foreigner but were very difficult to get. You go through rounds of drawing for them. At the very end, close to August, you could not get them unless through a travel deal, which included the ticket to the opening ceremony but prices ranged between 30000-100,000.

@dyoys500, you know the original plan Beijing had for lighting the cauldron? Using a giant phoenix to fly up and do it (not an actual phoenix obviously lol). However, due to the IOC's safety concerns, that plan was scrapped and instead we saw "Plan B."

No matter how much China throws money at its Opening Ceremony torch lighting, it will never ever compare to the most memorable and most legendary torch lighting in Barcelona in 1992. Search for "Opening Ceremony Barcelona archery" on this website.

@Fevernova99, no one's saying the CCP is even close to perfect. Certainly, they need to shape up when it comes to regulation and fair law enforcement. Yet we spend so much energy focusing on all that they need to do better that we don't appreciate all they've done already. Since the 1970s reforms, China has raised the standard of living, lifted millions out of poverty, dramatically improved infrastructure, etc. None of this would've been possible so quickly without a regime that can act fast.

Personally, I thought the London one was better (though none can ever compare with Barcelona's). This one feels like it's about man's achievements.. Like he's flying and all that. The London one is more about unity which gives me the warm & fuzzies. Just my personal opinion, though I can see why people would prefer this over London's with the whole walking on air thing...

@josny1, there was a portion near the beginning of the ceremony where the 29 "footsteps" fireworks that led from Tiananmen Square to the Bird's Nest were digitized on TV (all except the last two footsteps that appeared above the stadium itself). The footprints fireworks actually did happen, but because it's too dangerous for a helicopter to fly overhead to capture the footage, broadcasters showed us a digitized version of what was actually happening at the time. Nothing was faked.

@karmlan123 ...No, not because they're Chinese. Sorry, but this isn't about racism. You're actually replying to a Chinese who lives in North America. If you viewed the Opening Ceremonies torch lighting in Barcelona, you'll see how simple looking the venue was, but the austerity and magnificence and grandeur of the Olympic Spirit was evidently there. No other opening ceremony will EVER top that archer's fire-arrow flying over the cauldron. The audacity of that spectacle can never be topped.

@Fevernova99, in a perfect world, human rights would be respected universally. But we know the world's not perfect. When separate states have competing interests, competition breeds hostility. Regarding access to information: there's always a fine line between what should and shouldn't be available to the public. No country grants completely free access to all information or it'd put its own security at risk. Censorship is the norm; if you want to fight it, start with your own leaders.
