Sometimes when you are not looking for something it will find you. And that is what happened when I was researching for one of the other distillery's whisky reviews. The funny thing is I haven't got that video review done yet because I opened the door to Tormore and couldn't leave so this was the result. It is one of the most stunning pieces of architecture that is anything but typical for a Speyside distillery. It is built with granite, has a copper roof, and a bell tower that plays a Scottish song every quarter hour. It probably has the only curling pond on a distillery site and an extensively large garden of topiary, shaped like bells, whisky stills, and other shapes. It was designed by Alexander Cullen and the famous Georgian influenced architect, Sir Albert Richardson for Long John International then part of Schenley Industries. It is the youngest distillery to be classified as a listed building. When you look at it from the outside it reminds you of Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory.
As for the whisky most of Tormore whisky went into blends so it is hard to find there own distillery's core bottlings though they did have a 14 and 16 year old, but again, if you can find them. It is easier to find an independent bottling so that explains why I am reviewing the Gordon & MacPhail Tormore 13 Year Old which is part of their Discovery series. We will probably start to see more distillery bottlings now that Elixer Distillers has taken ownership from Pernod Ricard in 2022.
And why have do few people know about this distillery when it stands out as something special and different? It was closed to the public and does not have a visitor center though that is about to change in May 2024. I will be in Scotland at that time and will be looking forward to stopping by and look at this wonder of the Speyside. Let's watch the video and learn about the distillery and their whisky. Enjoy the video. Slàinte Mhath
