@@devisissy1 It's an automatic, more specifically, an automated manual transmission (AMT). Shifting and clutching are controlled by a computer, rather than manually.

It's not an automatic. It's an smt. Sequential manual transmission. Clutch less but still a manual. You can either use the paddles (buttons) or the stick on the floor to shift. Do any of you actually own this car?

isn't this just an Automatic Manual Transmission
@Irvin_Wright

No, it has a real Manual Transmission and uses an external pump to push the shift fork in and change the gears in the selector shaft. Automatic Manual Transmissions are different.

@@Irvin_Wright So there's a possibility to easily make it full manual? The only problem I see is having no clutch...
@ErikSeastead

@@Zeriel00it has a clutch. You can get a clutch pedal, shifter, linkage, and a couple of other parts and you'll have a regular manual box. People frequently convert them to manual when the SMT hydraulics break since almost no one knows how to work on it.

Commenting on 2024, this was the worst decision that Toyota did for the MR-S. Few are operating as intended, plenty are non operational due to this SMT System plagued with issues. Not even Toyota would fix em and give a warranty since they have admitted to this horrible system

Stupid system, problems after problems wasted too much money.. i rather have a clutch pedal illuminated the problems

Yes, it was a very unreliable system. Too bad, good idea for someone who wants an auto, but a bit sportier.

this system is extremely unreliable, I replaced 2 sensors ($500) and the pump is leaking fluid it takes 30 sec to pump until it stop ( weak pump) , TCU failure on mine , end up I converted to manual , don't buy SMT MR2 and M3 also they are very expensive , TCU is made by bosch, unreliable and overprice, 3 expensive sensors control the actuator , pump and actuator is over $4000 , the whole system is easy to fail

@paulshibbs

The SMT system is made by LUK in Germany (not Bosch). If the system is leaking you should just just fix it. Same as any other parts on a 20 year old car. I sell repair seals and they’re cheap. The system is quite reliable and a joy to drive in traffic or on the track.

Mine has 300.000km and eventually had a leak problem. Fix it and change disk for only 700$. The joy that you get worth every penny ❤️ ♥️
