The 'Tetsutaba' (steel beater - the one in the video weighs just shy of 6lbs) is a tool that you can use to develop resilience to strikes in addition to making your natural 'weapons' (such as shins) more effective. The benefit of this type of tool is that you can condition your body even if you don't have a partner to work with. The Tetsutaba works particularly well for thighs, arms, torso.
This type of training must be approached progressively under supervision. Typically you begin with a 'Taketaba' (bamboo beater) which is a lot lighter and has been used for centuries as an implement to improve health (particularly circulation). Once your body has become accustomed to the Taketaba, the Tetsutaba can be introduced slowly.
