Thank you so much. I just paid our local Iron Works welders about 1K $ to reinforce my 16’ trailer bed at the loading junction and they did an incredible job. It is a 30 year old trailer so it needed some help. When they got through I had them rebook up the electric brakes which hadn’t worked for about 3 years! So after all of their hard work I drove my 16’ trailer back to my farm. Oh Oh! The brake on the left side of the trailer was locking up every time I depressed the brake. You called it “running hot.” Well it was “SMMMMOOOKIN!” So I went to my favorite KZitem and watched your entire training video...it was perfect. I would watch about 10 minutes...go and perform the procedure. Then I would watch another 10 minutes and go perform the procedure. Your explanation and examples were so well done that I could reproduce the procedure and get the desired results. By the time I was done...it worked. I needed every single minute of your video! Thanks again. Patrick

Don't recommend using wire cutters to reset your springs. With experience no biggie, but then people reviewing may not be aware and they may nick the spring to much to cause a failure. Nice job, especially with the bearings. Love the upgrade on the nut assembly. You were very detail in your explanation of how and why.

Agreed on the use of the wire cutters Ron. They are super hard, but too much with the cutters can nick them. I do have experience, and finesse can't come through in video form. Glad you like the video and thanks for the comment. Take care, G.

I have a dump trailer which I have to leave outside due to under cover room. I had it lifted off the ground for the winter, Winter is over so before I was about to let it down onto the ground I turned the wheels to make sure everything was free moving, unfortunately one wheel (front left with elect. brake) was sticking or rubbing. Thanks to UTube and more especially your video I could understand what to look for and fix. I'm not done yet as it is pretty rusty in there and parts are not moving freely, but you gave me the courage and knowhow to tackle this job. Thanks again. Mike

Great video! I broke a magnet clip today and you showed how to install a new one. Good deal. And it was good to see that you showed the short lining (the primary shoe) goes in the front and the long lining (the secondary shoe) goes in the rear. I have taken apart so many drum brakes to find that backwards. I've done hundreds, maybe thousands of drum brakes but usually hydraulic not electric. Until today I haven't touched an electric brake since the 1970's. Thanks!

Great video! I too had the misfortune of having one of my trailer brakes go bad on me. Plenty of dust on wheel and hot hub. Those brake assemblies are only one year old so I was surprised to have an issue. Could not stop and work on it as hub was too hot to handle. I have to remove the wheel to get to the bearings. I had a suspicion that the magnetic shoe arm was getting hung up on that metal protrusion on the front brake shoe. Not gonna deal with that bushing so I'll file away on the side of the protrusion and see if that fixes the problem.

Watched the whole thing G. Better you than me...I've done my share. Well done tutorial and good tips with simple tools, Nice! One thing I used to do if the drum weren't turned and knew they had been hot was to use some medium emery on the inside of the drum by hand, because it would show hot spots right away, for possible turning or discard. Brakes are one of those things that people usually don't realize is; that they are taking their lives as well as others in their hands. I know we share that philosophy. Quick Story: 100yrs ago...Had a gal come in with a Vega with a semi built 350 and an Old's pumpkin and axles shortened, for new rear air shocks @¿@ (single feed!!). Put in the new shocks and built a dual feed for her, set it on the ground to road toad it...thought better and looked under the hood. Nice job on the engine conversion, clean work on the fire wall...then noticed it had the OEM Master Cylinder...and had been chromed. Oh My...knowing it had improper sized wheel cylinders on the rear and the tiny stuff on the front...Just couldn't road toad it. Told her, nice job on the engine and pumpkin but I would never work on this again until that was fixed and that she was taking other peoples life in her hands which I won't tolerate! A few months later she stopped by and showed a whole new system she had put in to it. Can't remember all the details but it was substantial and thanked her for stopping by. One of the scariest thing I ever saw for a hot rod...a rocket with no parachute or brakes! Till Then, ~PJ

+pjsalchemy Good tip on the emery! That's true, they're nothing not to have right for sure. Good story! Stopping is something most won't think about since it's all about the speed...lol. Good you were able to voice the concern, she adhered to the advice, and then found a remedy! G.

I bought one of those bearing packers years ago and it sure beats scraping grease off the palm of your hand. I didn't have any issues with mine but I did buy a Rubbermaid container with a lid to store it in when not in use. That way I don't' have to worry about it getting contaminated with dust or dirt. I do the same thing with my oil funnels . As always your trailer brake tutorial was very informative and it makes me wonder if a lot of these RV owners that talk about bearing failure might be caused by that bushing being worn out.
@ghostses
9 жыл бұрын
+Lee Mullen I agree Lee! Why I waiting all these years to spend about $5-6 I don't know...lol. Good idea using a container to store it and funnels. I usually clean them up so they don't get contaminated. I guess if the bushing was worn, it could cause the heat to get high enough with brakes hanging to damage the bearings. Or it could be a simple maintenance or adjustment issue- who knows. Take care, G.

Good info. When you are putting it back together, Put the lower spring and star adjuster on both shoes and put both shoes up against the backing plate. It will stay there while you put the hold down springs on. That way you have both hands to work with. On another note, why not just grind down the shoe where the linkage bound up on it? Seems like it would have kept it from locking up.

One thing I would not use anything(sealer) on the seal lips when pressing them into the hub,,. Next time it will be a bear to get them out and leave a mess in there to clean out next time. I know what the book says but if pressed in right ..its not coming out nor will any water pass. Just my .02 .. great job ! thanks for sharing.

You're not the first to mention it Jeff, but you are correct. I took it apart and messed up on the clip. So when I put it back together to shoot it again, I put them on backwards. Good luck, G.

Thanks for the detailed video! Was your last step to use the EZ Lube feature optional after hand packing the bearings? I have seen a few persons add grease like you did, but just a few pumps and not waiting for the grease to come out of the bearing. After all the work repacking and inspecting the bearings, I would not have a problem spending a few more minutes to completely fill the EZ lube cavity if it would help the bearings.

No problem John! In short, I would say yes, it's optional after manually packing the bearings. That's not unlike doing a repack on a vehicle with this type of bearing setup. You would pack them manually, assemble, adjust the preload and move on. If the trailer will be submerged though, it would be beneficial to fully pack the cavities to aid in keeping the moisture out. Personally, I prefer to pack them full regardless if the trailer would be submersed or not. Just my 3 cents. Do some homework and do what works for you. Good luck and take care, G.

When the assembly is new, do you recommend to Lubricate with Permatex ceramic lubricant, or does it arrive pre-lubed? I would have to take everything apart? also, You could have put the Permatex lubricant on the spindle instead of the grease? Mine are Nev-R-lube so I don't have high temp grease. Thank you very for this excellent video!

Julie, I've never purchased complete backing plates but I would assume they're lubed from the factory. I would not use the permatex on the spindles- only bearing grease. Hope this helps, G.

Not able to determine where the front of your trailer is. I notice you installed your shoes opposite of how they were at the start of your video. Primary and secondary shoe placement is critical for smooth breaking

This was the left side of the trailer, so the tongue is on the left side of the video. What you saw was correct, meaning the shoes at the start at the video were on different from the end. I messed up the first clip so I put things back together so start recording a new clip, and put them on backwards by mistake. The end of the video is correct. Take care, G.

I see that your wheel has been balanced I thought they don't balance trailer tires
@ghostses

I've seen it both ways James. Some say yes, others say no. This was after new tires and the shop balanced them by their default I guess. Whether it's required or not- I can't say. Take care, G.

Somebody put a right side backing plate on the left side of your trailer, check out the beginning of your video your lever is going the wrong way and the long shoe was on the front. the green coating on the CRC seal is a sealer and doesn't require any additional sealer if it was bare metal it would

Steve, this is the left side of the trailer in the video (drivers side). The lever should always, for this setup, be in the front- which it is. As noted in my other reply, I inadvertently put the shoes on backwards to re-shoot the clip. I think that's what's adding to the confusion. Good tip on the seal! Take care, G.
