It might be an unpopular opinion, but reducing achievement gaps is not one of my goals as a teacher. Why not? I just can't see how I can teach lessons ethically and in good conscience with that as a goal. Luckily, I have never been required to have this as a teaching goal, but I am overhearing some murmurs that it's becoming common.
I know it sounds harsh, and even saying it is weird for me, for someone who protests to care about students, but that's exactly why I can't care about achievement gaps: I care about ALL students.
PS: The long delay in posting is because I have moved countries these past two months and also installing apple updates destroyed my iMovie, so this is on my fancy new computer.
Happy Teaching Everyone!
Travis.
