When Westerns think "slavery" we think Africans, cotton and the middle passage. Most History units out there for kids teach this. But does anyone out there teach a unit on the history of slavery? If we took examples from multiple different times and places, students would be able to grasp deeper conceptual understandings that might be more relevant. Instead of coming away thinking, "those Europeans were terrible people," they might think, "all humans could become terrible people," and that is more valuable.
