We spent a month travelling around Malaysia, starting with a few days in Kuala Lumpur and then flying to Malaysian Borneo.
Kuala Lumpur was pretty much as you'd expect; big city, lots going on, lots of smells (some good, some bad), and plenty of opportunity for exploring. We took a taxi to see the Batu caves and after climbing the colourful and numerous steps to the top, were greeted with a pretty amazing cave full of colourful religious shrines and inhabited with lots of macaques.
Borneo was incredible. Whilst the cities we visited (Sandakan and Kota Kinabalu) were fairly basic and not the cleanest (plenty of sizeable rats and cockroaches running around), Borneo is after all an island famous for its wildlife! We visited the Sepilok Orangutan sanctuary, which rehabilitates Orangutans that have either been orphaned or rescued from the pet trade. Some of the younger animals need more hands-on care, but there are plenty that now live in the surrounding jungle that sometimes come to the feeding stations to 'top up' what they get in the wilderness (food at the feeding stations is kept deliberately boring to encourage them to be self-sufficient in the wild).
We then travelled down to the Kinabatangan river to stay in a jungle lodge. Leaf monkeys and macaques were really common and often ventured right into the camp. We took several early morning/evening cruises up and down the river, also spotting saltwater crocodiles, kingfishers, proboscis monkeys, hornbills and owls. You can see orangutans and elephants here, but sadly we weren't lucky enough to see there here.
We finished this part of the trip with a stay in Kota Kinabalu, where the snorkelling was surprisingly good! The reef looked pretty nice and aside from the usual reef fish we had a few good sized black tip reef sharks circling us for a few minutes, followed by a turtle cruising past a few minutes later.
All in all a great start to Malaysia, with lots to look forward to back on the Malaysian peninsula!
