GREAT UPLOAD!!!! Hitch hiking is hands down the MOST fun way to travel and it's awesome to see an upbeat video like this where it can explain the fun adventures of traveling this way safely. Hope you're enjoying your time in California, rock on Benjamin and happy holidays!

Hey brother,i'm a 62 year old dude who's hitchhiked from California to Tennessee and back three times. I've also HHed up to Washington state,Idaho, several what I call local trips usually 300mi. or less one way. I got to tell ya after watching several videos on hitchhiking, your's was the first one that compelled me to leave a comment. Oh one thing I forgot to mention was all the trips I took were between 1974 to 1984. lol, OG I reckon!!! great video, man.

Both have benefits. Solitude... versus companionship. Safety versus freedom. Harder to get rides (unless with women) versus easier to get rides

Don't forget your medicine and a Medic Alert Braclet in case of a medical emergency. Also bring cash, travelers checks, atm, a cell phone with a charger (3/4G).

I like the tips! I am about to start a new series called hitchhiking and fishing. The first season will be in Texas and Louisiana. I am starting in early September from New Orleans. Not too many people like hitchhiking in Texas. How do you feel about hitching in Texas? My dreaded state used to be Oklahoma. I would just get through that state as fast as I could.

I don't know if any of Benjamin's points had effect on why I stopped for him, but I do judge a hitchhiker by his (or the very rare "her") being clean. Yes, it's a challenge for long-range travelers of the thumb to maintain a clean appearance (clothing as well as personal hygiene), but it can be the one reason you DO/DON'T get a ride. We had great conversation, finding common interests during our 30 minute ride from Olympia to Chehalis WA. By the way, Ben, where were you when you shot this vid?

Maybe Im just lucky, but I even rock a 9-month beard, and I don't have any problems getting rides, or dealing with cops. I smile and wave at everyone, and have gotten advice and even rides from cops. And not to the station! +1 on the sock tip.

great vido man, im looking at hitch hiking across Europe for a month or two in summer 2013. was wondering what you do to keep yourself safe though. lik ive heard a lot of hitch hikers keep a pen knife in pocket just incase and also put belongings in back seat and not in the trunk incase the driver takes off while your getting in/out of the car.

@AdventureSauce They're pretty big on youtube, the channel is called Vsauce, they make videos about cool things like why we dream, or why there's a moon, or the loudest explosion ever. They have this thing called Vsauce Leanback, where it's a playlist of something, like metal, or sound, or something. They had one of your videos, the picture one, in one of their playlist! That's how I found you!

As a woman, I would ad never hitchhike alone. I was hit on by nearly every man who picked me up and narrowly escaped being raped and maybe murdered. I didn't follow the rule about choose your ride, and got into a car with someone who I got a bad vibe from. He immediately started soliciting me for sex, offering to pay me ect...We were supposed to be on the freeway but he pulled off and started to head down a rural road he had to stop at an intersection I grabbed my pack and jumped out and ran.

I've seen lots of people looking for a ride. I'd have had no problem pulling over for them if they weren't dressed like a cereal killers. I'd like to to add be well groomed, don't be high, and don't be drunk. Would love the company on a road trip, but not going to waste my time if you look like Charles Manson as most of the hitchers I've blown past. Just to add.
