You didn't know there are people who have difficulty reading or even walking much? Wait for Diana Ser cna video where she herself got a shock when she interviewed and test those people with difficulty reading or understanding notice written in English. Most people can self return tray but old folks and those with certain health problems may have difficulty... For us who can help, let's us try to help the elderly and disabled to return their tray. I make sure to offer help to any elders around me whenever i dine out. Some times when i only take away n i see an old folk at my estate i will offer them my help. Love my estate 1 and only coffeeshop.... If someone forget to return, the kopi boy and girl will just help quietly. When some kaypo yell at the old folks, the kopi girl and boy always reply politely they will do it for them and signal the old folks to leave. Usually after this experience any old folks also will auto try returning.

CNA should do another episode about how dirty the tables are now that trays are returned by the diners. Cleaners used to wipe the table after clearing it. Now that customers return the trays, the cleaners should have MORE time to clean the tables. INSTEAD the cleaners leave the tables uncleaned and just stay in their tray return stations. The tables have food stains BAKED into the table. With the current endemic, dirty tables means more risk for diseases to spread, covid or otherwise.

I don't see any issue with the amount of fine for not returning trays and clearing your table, but I question how the minister avoid the question of why speeding fines are so much less when you consider how much more severe the potential consequences of a speeding car can cause. It seems there is a fear of incurring the wrath of a driver, who could potentially be more well heeled or even connected than say somebody not returning trays.

The same thing is happening in Vietnam. People will wear masks but not wear helmets while driving and riding motorbikes. They fear being fined for not wearing a mask more than not wearing a helmet. The fine for not wearing a mask is 10x or more than for not wearing a helmet. And by not wearing a helmet but wearing a mask shows the police are more worried about mask wearing than helmet wearing (and running red lights). Priorities are F'd up.

Agree! But I think we also have to remember that Singapore advanced v quickly from a 3rd world country to a 1st world country in less than 50 years. Sounds like an excuse, but the older generation probably finds it tedious to have what we term as 'proper' table manners, considering that they grew up with the 3rd world culture - seeing people throwing chicken bones on the table and floor etc. Spitting on the floors and urinating in the lifts were a common sight even back in the early 2000s. A change of mindset comes with reevaluating our values on what makes us courteous and constant reinforcement. Basically it's up to us to change the culture and mindset of our generation! And by the time it's the generation of our children's children, hopefully Singapore wouldn't need to be such a fine city, because the good table manners and courtesies will be a part of the Singaporean culture :-)

It's simple. If you know that you are able, just return your tray. If the tray return area is full, put down at nearest area to the tray return area or spend the extra 2 minutes to place at another area. If you are unable to return due to age, handicap, etc, just leave the tray at the table but do clean up as much as possible so easier for people to follow up. As long as people are decent and don't come up with excuses, the fines will not bother you at all. Just like the existing fines for littering, since decent people don't litter, it doesn't affect them at all. Fines unfortunately exist due to people feeling defensive of their rude behaviour and do not want to elevate Singapore to a more civil society.

Haha the producers attempt to convince us that the hawker still needs the cleaners but its a matter of time before the cleaners lose their jobs. From PM Lee NDR speech we know that cleaner pay is going up. Either our food cost go up by passing on to us or they cut down on number of cleaner per hawker center. The latter is more favourable now since theres less work, so one cleaner can do the job of two and that is doubling productivity, exactly what the govt wants. But i think it will take a few more years before it happens, the cleaners wont lose their jobs overnight. But since some of them are getting really old and going to retire there might be a supply problem which will auto-resolve the unemployment issue. Basically some cleaner dont mind to lose their job and decide to just rest and retire, live off CPF, savings and kids.

The LAW has to kicks-in in order to TEACH this people a hard lesson by issuing fine of $300. ONLY then, it will be effective. As at today, since the Sept 1, i can see a lot of improvement NOT because these "litter bug" doing it willingly but out of for the SAKE OF fine ($300). in Singapore, it need to teach the people by using law instead of by education, so long as $$$ needs to come out form their own pocket, these people will be obedient. NVM about historically not having to do it but those below that commented how it was unfair or too much work for the elderly is total BS. If you feel that way then you can return it for them, do your social obligation. If they can't read, then explain it to them. These are not insurmountable hurdles to overcome. They've had to walk there to eat did they not? Is it that difficult for them to then walk with their trays on the way out?? Excuses that the return stations are inconvenient are just that, excuses to not have to do it. Good to implement a law/fine. That deterrent seems to work just fine for littering, this isn't that far removed.

Tray return will work well for small numbers of crockery. Like one or two pax’s. It seems that such law is designed to help the hawker/food centre to show case the world. But asking the patrons to clean up the table after the meal may be a bit over and leave a lot of room for argument if the NEA officer just want to find fault in you. How are this going to apply to the foreigner who visit the hawker for the first time? Are you going to fine them? If yes, we are really a 'fine' city to them. If patrons are not able to return their tray to the right Halal or Non-Halal tray-return rack, will there be a possibility that another fine be imposed for incorrect tray-return in the near future. My honest suggestion to those who cannot remember to return the tray and clean up the table for the next patrons, try not to dine in at the hawker or food centre, this will help avoid unnecessary fine of S$300.00 (not a small amount). Instead, you can da po back home to consume like what we are doing during our current CB period. You can save the $300.00 fine for better use or save it for your speeding fine which way cheaper (just joking). Remember: The offence for not returning a tray is much more severe compare to speeding.
